The Evolution of Feminism

Feminism has evolved in waves throughout history to advocate for women's rights and equality. The first wave in the 19th-early 20th centuries focused on rights to education and voting. The second wave occurred in the 1960s-70s and addressed legal inequality. A third wave began in the 1990s bringing attention to additional issues like treatment of women of color and role of religion and systems in oppression. Disagreements within feminism led to different branches developing like anarchist feminism which opposed patriarchy and hierarchy, and Marxist feminism which connected women's oppression to capitalist exploitation of labor inside and outside the home. Feminism continues evolving to address how women are left behind or disadvantaged in many areas of society and systems

The Evolution of Feminism

Valeria Soto 9th

Throughout history, feminism has made advances such as the right of

women to education, to vote, to work or equality before the law. It slowly
became popular. The first feminist wave was in the 19th and early 20s,  the
second was in the 1960s and 1970s, and the third extends from the 1990s to
the present. Thanks to this waves, a number of different types of feminism
where created.

Feminism looks for equity between men and women, wanting everyone treat
women as they supposed to. Inside the feminist movement, there were divided
ideas and opinions of what feminism should oppose to. That’s when different
branches of feminism where created.

In 1860, there was few people who believed that women should be treated
equally as men, for example, Mikhail Bakunin- a russian revolutionary
anarchist- who opposed patriarchy and the way the law "[subjected women] to
the absolute domination of the man". Since then, women started to realize that
society was dominated by men. “Masculine”, dominant, ruler, aggression,
competition; all of this was what was needed to be in the top. While “feminine”,
sensitive, passive, compassion was in the bottom. In 19th, Anarchist
Feminism was originated with theorists like Emma Goldman, Voltarine de
Cleyre and Lucy Parsons (all women and anarchist feminisms) which looks for
the abolition of hierarchy and patriarchy, which both affect women.
In 19th, Maxist Feminism, was originated by the Marxist theory created by Karl
Marx. It focuses on the effect of capitalism on labor, productivity, and economic
development and argues for a worker revolution to overturn capitalism in favor
of communism. Marxist feminism connects the oppression of women to Marxist
ideas about exploitation, oppression and labor. They think about how in work
and home, women are taken down. For example, in their eyes domestic work is
just another way patriarchy explode and devalue women by letting them take
care of everything in home and please their husbands every day without taking
a break.
But why are this feminism necessary? Why create more? Because in every
system women are left behind. By looking just for equity, specific things will
not change. Women oppression is more than men violence: labor exploitation,
poorly laboral payment, discrimination toward P.O.C women, system and
religion manipulation, etc. Feminism is always necessary and its evolution is a
clear proof about that. Many things were accomplished thanks to this movement
and that can’t be denied nor unaccepted. This words, in the future, might deliver
a satisfactory end.
