Developing the Will
ENGAGE
What was your most important moral experience last year? How
did you go about formulating and coming up with a decision?
What did you actually do? Was your decision and action aligned
with your moral principles? Why do you say so?

We now discuss our responsibility for our actions and the

voluntary nature of moral purpose. It takes reason, integrity of
purpose, moral courage, and will power to stand up for what you
believe is morally right!
My most important moral experience last year was when I was asked on
which course I will take. Right after I got accepted and enrolled in college,
I was having a hard time thinking of what course should I take because
the courses that are offered, it doesn’t suit my interest, aside from BSIT
because I was never interested in Business, Education, etc. My interest
was taking a course in Animation. Or a Multimedia Arts course, but the
college that I enrolled in didn’t offer MMA course, only IT. Somehow IT is
somewhat related to Multimedia Arts or Animation. But I know both
courses are way different from each other. I always think that it’s not too
late, I could still find ways to be able to take a course in Animation, maybe
after I get a degree in BSIT and a job, so that I’ll be able to pursue my
dream course. I always think of the positive side of life. I know everything
happens for a reason. Sometimes I regret beng a IT student, it was hard
for me at first and I was having a hard time adjusting to the lectures of
the course because I couldn’t relate to it but I’m still trying my best to
adopt and learn in my current course.
EXPLORE

Watch a movie depicting moral courage. Write a short reflection

about the movie. What was the moral dilemma that the main
character faced? What did the main character go through in
standing up facing moral principles? Was the main character
correct in showing moral courage on such situation? Defend your
answer.
The movie that I’ve watched is If I Stay. A story
of a 17 year old girl named, Mia, a cello prodigy.
She loves classical music and she eventually
fell in love with a guy named Adam who’s also
into music, he is a member of a rock band. She
is trapped in an ethereal realm who must
choose between life and death. The moral
dilemma in the movie is a life and death
situation, where Mia has to choose whether she
fight for her to live or to let go—after
experiencing a painful incident where she loses
her mother, father and younger brother on a car
accident. Later on, Mia finds herself wandering
among them in a hazy, out-of-body experience.
She must decide whether she will stay or go.
And she’s been recalling her memories together with
the people she loved. She couldn’t find a reason to
live, and she was hurting so much thinking that her
mother and father are gone, including her younger
brother. She will woke up as an orphan. Yet, she
found strength to fight from the people who loved
her. And also from the man she loves the most. Even
though she was struggling whether she will live or to
die—to stay or to go. She was about to let go, but
Adam made her realize something important, she is
not alone. She still has a family. Adam mentioned to
her while she was still unconscious and fighting for
her life, that she got accepted in Julliard. He
composed a song just for her. She had strength and
a reason to live. It wasn’t her time. She was able to
to wake up from being unconscious.
She is correct in showing moral courage
because on a life and death situation she
realize something important in her life. She
still has a family. Even though she’ll wake up
as an orphan for losing her mother, father and
younger brother. There are still people who
loved her. And Adam give her strength to fight
for her to stay. Adam gave her a reason to live.
She control the whole thing and if she live or if
she die, it’s all up to her. Yet, in the end she
chose to live.
