Effectiveness of Blended Learning to the Academic Performance
of BSIT 1-H Students at Colegio De Montalban
S.Y. 2020-2021
CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION
This chapter of the paper presents the problem and its setting. It includes the
background of the study, the statement of the problem, significance of the study, and scope
and delimitation of the study.
Background of the Study
New practices are widespread in education, with an increasing reliance on blended
learning tools. In response to the COVID-19, educational institutions have produced new
strategies for learning. A significant number of academic organizations worldwide are turning to
new blended learning platforms to help students learn.
Various studies have recognized the significance of blended learning approach. As an
innovative tool for education that aims to develop the competencies and computer literacies of
the 21st century learners. A survey conducted by Vaughan (2014) showed that the results on the
study of application of blended learning has appeared that it has something to do with the
manner called collaborative learning applications wherein it is related on the blended learning
courses.
Students who participate in blended learning can attend lectures and complete
assignments via online discussions. In the present day, the innovative concept of blended
learning transforms internet usage from social media platforms to educational tools.
Furthermore, blended learning can enable the efficient transportation of academic information to
students anywhere, making their days more productive. Blended learning is more than just
using online textbooks; it is the action of improving students’ information technology proficiency
and promoting a new avenue for students and teachers to collaborate.
The purpose of this study is to determine if blended learning has an impact on students’
academic success.
Statement of the Problem
This study aims to determine the Effectiveness of Blended Learning to the Academic
Performance of BSIT 1-H Students at Colegio De Montalban S.Y. 2020-2021.
Specifically this study will answer the following questions:
1. What is the effect of using blended learning to the academic performance of the students?
2. What is the effect of blended learning in teaching strategy of the instructors towards the
students?
3. Is there a significant difference between blended learning and teaching strategy of the
instructor?
Scope and Delimitation
This study focuses to the Effectiveness of Blended Learning to the Academic
Performance of BSIT 1-H Students at Colegio De Montalban S.Y. 2020-2021.
This study is limited to the students who are in the current situation of blended learning
approach. The researchers wants to find out the effectiveness of blended learning to the
students’ academic performance.
Conceptual Framework
In this conceptual framework describe the flow of the study that titled Effectiveness of
Blended Learning to the Academic Performance of BSIT 1-H Students at Colegio De Montalban
S.Y. 2020-2021.
Theoretical Framework
Variation Theory
The variation theory of learning explains that for learning to happen, the participant must
experience variation. Without this experience, there is no learning (Marton & Trigwell, 2000). It
is believed that in order to develop new ways of seeing, one must first experience certain
patterns of variations.
This theory also states that these patterns of variation can be experienced regardless of
the method of instruction used. It is also possible that the use of various teaching media can
help students develop these patterns. The modes of experience offered by the kitset and the
simulations are in line with the concepts of blended learning.
This description shows that students are focused on the critical aspects of charge
conservation, and that these are achieved through simulations that encourage students to
identify their own scientific views. The goal of the package is to help the students experience
critical patterns of variation in a variety of topics. This design aims to help the students develop
an awareness of these patterns and their effects on learning.
Learning for Mastery Theory
In the theory of Learning for Mastery of Bloom (Lindgren, 1983) emphasizing the
learning of students in the lessons learned is relevant to the learning environment and the
quality of teaching. The students will give interesting and unique experiences to the use of
commercial advertisement in marketing the help of a good teacher.
Skinner (Ornstein, 1992) who was a behaviorist ‘and identified with his operant
conditioning’ has declared that animals including humans can be controlled to behave properly.
An organism, person or animal, will behave properly to receive a variety of gratifications
including food, identification, praise and more.
The key to this conditioning operator is contingency management which means giving
the right reward after the student’s name is immediately shown to the proper behavior. Proper
practice is any teacher’s specification that usually relates to the learning of any material or
behavior within the class. The usual reinforcer ‘is attention, reproduction.
Informational Social Influence Theory
According to Cialdini’s Informational Social Influence Theory, someone copies others
when he does not know how to behave correctly. People are based on technology; he acts
according to information sources because they think they know what they are doing.
In advertisements, using testimonials from experts as well as from artists who know
more about what’s right. Private acceptance occurs when we believe someone is right. It may
completely change one’s beliefs, habits and actions. Public compliance happens when we copy
others because of fear of mockery or non-acceptance when others act.
According to the theory, a person is adapted for he is to be accepted and acknowledged
by others. It is related to our research because it makes or adapts a person so that he cannot
leave the modern day and for his good
Hypothesis
Alternative Hypothesis
Blended Learning have significant effects on the academic performance of students.
Null Hypothesis
Blended Learning have no significant effects on the academic performance of students.
CHAPTER 2
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES
This chapter discusses the related literature and studies that the researcher considered
in determining the significance of the current study. It also provides a synthesis of the art in
order to fully comprehend the research for a better understanding of the study.
Blended Learning
Tupas and Linas-Laguda (2020) define blended learning (BL) as an innovative trend in
education that is connected to various fields of knowledge. Blended Learning has frequently
distinguished between traditional and online learning. Blended Learning combines the benefits
of traditional and online learning to increase learner participation in the lesson. It also provides
learning materials and teacher roles, as well as learner engagement and the social
environment.
According to UNESCO (2011), the shift to e-learning is becoming a necessary trend for
a more responsive 21st-century education. One such effort is blended learning, which combines
online learning and face-to-face instruction. Furthermore, according to Jokinen and Mikkonen
(2013), the concept of blended learning is a hybrid instructional approach that provides positive
opportunities for students to learn.
According to the findings, collaborative planning, as described by the majority of
teachers, provides opportunities to enhance and develop teachers’ instruction in a blended
learning environment. This assists teachers in ensuring alignment of learning objectives with
learning contents and activities; thus, it tends to be more holistic by integrating instructional
activities into a larger teaching approach rather than a series of smaller learning tasks.
Academic Performance
According to Tesfay (2017), academic performance is the educational goal that a
student, teacher, or institution achieves over a specific time period. This is measured through
examinations or continuous assessments, and the goal varies depending on the individual or
institution. Academic performance is a term used in school to describe when a student excels
academically. They excel in one area of school and do well in their studies.
According to Bamard (2004), the academic performance of students is heavily reliant on
parental involvement in their academic activities in order to achieve a higher level of quality in
academic success. Academic performance refers to performance in an academic setting.
Academic performance according to Hijazi & Naqvi, (2006), the academic performance is
not affected by age, gender, and place of residence but they also said those who live near to
university can perform much better than others who live far from university. They also theorize
that weak students is group with good students, will do better in academic and its will lead
students to graduate on time. Based on the study of Kuncel et al., (2005), is important for an
institution for the good outcomes that lead to the job performance in the future. As stated by
Alimi, Ehinola, and Alabi (2012), said the poor rate of academic performance also can resulted
to the economy of the country.
Effectiveness of Blended Learning to the Academic Performance
According to Noskova, T., Morze, N., et al. (2013), the modern higher education system
is now focused not only on the development of future professional competence but also on
preparing students for the new intellectual environment in a changing digital world. The
educational system should always reflect the current state of affairs in order to provide effective
professional education and self-education activities. Furthermore, they believed that teachers
needed to understand not only the traditional classroom environment, but also a virtual
environment where information and communication behavior should differ from that of the
current generation, which has changed in their educational needs.
Salazar, R. (2015) stated that the implementation of blended learning was beneficial to
student learning because online materials such as videos, learning sites, and slide
presentations are effective teaching tools for today’s diverse students. On the other hand, some
students are dissatisfied with the limited amount of classroom time and their inability to absorb
the lessons immediately. Many people believe that computers, internet access, and facilities are
the most important factors in implementing blended learning, but the most important thing to
have in order to successfully implement blended learning is the ability to maximize its
components.
It was clear with the aforementioned related literature and studies that implementation of
blended learning approach will help students to expand their learning ability in different areas of
this learning style, to increase their academic knowledge and performance and provide an
excellent opportunity for them although we are amid pandemic.
CHAPTER 3
RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODOLOGY
This chapter describes and identifies the research methodology used in the
study, focusing on data collection techniques and procedures, participants, and data
analysis techniques.
Research Method and Techniques Used
This study used quantitative method utilizing descriptive research design. This
method is appropriate to determine the effectiveness of blended learning to the
academic performance of BSIT 1-H students at Colegio de Montalban and since the
research questions seek an answer that leads to numerical data.
Population and Sample
The participants of this study are the BSIT 1-H students at Colegio de Montalban.
With a target population of 20, the researchers used Slovin’s formula with a 5% margin
of error to get the sample size that is equal to 50.
The researcher used stratified random sampling technique to get the
respondents. According to Hayes (2019), this type of sampling sample is as subject of a
statistical population in which each member of the subset has an equal probability of
being chosen.
Instrument Used
This study used a research-made survey questionnaire that is validated by the
experts, gathering required information from the respondents.
The researcher used Likert Scale to know the effectiveness of blended learning
to the academic performance of our respondents. Ranged from Strongly Agree (5),
Agree (4), Neutral (3), Disagree (2), and Strongly Disagree (1).
Data Gathering Procedures
The researcher will make a permission letter to the dean and instructor to ask for
approval to conduct an online survey through google form, after the validation, the
researcher will provide a link that incorporate to the questionnaire of the respondents of
BSIT 1-H.
The researcher will provide a direction on how the respondents answer the
forms, after the respondents answer the questionnaire, it will automatically save to the
data list of the respondents who answered the questionnaire.
Data Processing and Statistical Treatment
This research is only a preliminary study and not a requirement for obtaining a
degree such as thesis and dissertation, no attempt has been made to analyze the data
in this study by means of high and complex statistical data technique. The researchers
only knew the number or quantity of those who chose each choice of each item in the
questionnaire. Therefore, only tallying, obtaining percentage, and weighted mean, were
done by the researchers. Which used the following formula:
P= x
Where:
P = percentage
x = number of respondents who responded to the particular item
n = total number of respondents
WM= ( W1 x x1) + ( W2 x x2) + …
Where:
WM = weighted mean
x = value of each item
n = total number of respondents
