MOLE CONCEPT
Background Information for Learners
In real life situation, pieces of matter are quantified by finding the mass or by counting. Market vendors
for example, would rather sell mongo seeds by getting the mass and salted eggs by counting. The choice of
quantifying goods is determined by convenience. It easier to get the mass of rice grains rather than count the
grains. It is more convenient to count the number of eggs rather than get their mass. To measure these quantities,
mass units such as kilogram or gram, or counting units such as dozen, or case are being used.
In the laboratory, chemists measure out a chemical substance and react it with another substance to form
the desired quantity of new product. In this case, chemists want to know the number of atoms, ions or molecules
because these are the ones that react with each other. However, these things are too small and too many to count
in a ream, or a case, a mole also represent a certain number of particles.
A mole denotes a collection of large fixed number of particles (atoms, ions, or molecules). It is defined
as the amount of substance containing the same number of atoms as 12.0000 g of pure carbon -12. The symbol
for the number of mole is n and its unit is abbreviated as mol.
But how many atoms or molecules does a mole of any substance contain? Amadeo Avogadro, an Italian
lawyer and physicist, pioneered the studies in counting atoms and molecules. He concluded that a mole of any
substance contains exactly 6.022 x 1023 particles. This is called Avogadro’s number. The term particles refer
to the ions, atoms or molecules.

is the same as the number of atoms of carbon in exactly 12g of Carbon-12

The number 6.02214076 x 1023 is popularly known as the Avogadro constant or Avogadro’s number and is often
denoted by the symbol ‘NA’. The elementary entities that can be represented in moles can be atoms, molecules,
monoatomic/polyatomic ions, and other particles (such as electrons).
For free elements existing as single atoms such as gold (Au), Silver (Ag) and sulfur (S), we count their
particles by atoms; for ionic compounds like sodium chloride (NaCl), we can express the number of
particles by formula units; for covalent compound such as carbon dioxide (CO 2), particles are counted
as molecules and for particles, they are counted as ions.

1. How many molecules are there in 4.0 moles NaCl (Table Salt)?

To answer this question, you have to consider this:

Using the dimensional analysis approach, you will be able to convert the number of moles to its equivalent
amount in the number of particles.

THE MOLAR MASS OF A COMPOUND


Atomic and Molecular Mass
The atomic mass of an element is the mass of one atom of the element expressed in atomic mass units
(amu). It accounts for the abundance of the various isotopes of the element and assigns an average value to the
mass of one atom of the element. For example, the atomic mass of carbon is 12.011 atomic mass units since
carbon samples generally contain 98.89% of the carbon-12 isotope, 1.11% of carbon-13, and trace amounts of
carbon-14. However, the atomic masses of these isotopes are different.
The atomic mass of a carbon-12 atom is 12 atomic mass units, but that of a carbon-13 atom is 13 amu.
The atomic mass of an element is roughly equal to the sum of all the protons and neutrons present in its nucleus.
The molecular mass of an element is the sum of the atomic masses of all its constituent elements. This
quantity is also represented in terms of atomic mass units. Therefore, the molecular mass of water is equal to the
sum of the atomic masses of its constituents – hydrogen and oxygen. The atomic mass of hydrogen is 1.00794
amu and that of oxygen is 15.9994. Since water molecules contain 2 hydrogen atoms and only one oxygen atom,
the molecular mass of H2O is 18.0154 amu.

Molar Mass
The molar mass of a substance is defined as the total mass of one mole of the substance. It is often represented
in terms of ‘grams per mole’ (g/mol). However, the SI unit of this quantity is kg/mol.

In computing the number of moles of given substances, it is necessary that we know the molar
masses or their atomic masses. The complete list of the atomic masses of elements is found in the periodic
table of elements. The molar masses of compounds, however, are computed. They are equal to the sum
of atomic masses of all atoms present in the compounds. The unit is commonly used to describe atomic
and molar masses is the gram/mole (g/mol).

Solution:
1. a. Given Formula: H2O
The formula contains 2 atoms of hydrogen and 1 atom of oxygen.
b. The atomic masses of the atoms involved (taken from the periodic table) are:
H = 1.008 or 1.01 g/mol O = 15.999 or 16.00 g/mol

H = 2 x 1.01 g/mol = 2.02 g/mol
O = 1 x 16.00 g/mol = 16.00 g/mol

The formula contains 1 atom of aluminum, 3 atoms of oxygen and 3 atoms of hydrogen.

The Mass-Mole Relationship


The number of moles is computed by dividing the mass of the substance by its atomic mass (if an
elements) and molar mass (if a compound). Mathematically this can be written as:

PERCENT COMPOSITION OF COMPOUND


Background Information for Learners
In the earlier lessons you have learned about calculating the molar mass. And the connection between molar
mass, number of moles, and number of particles in a mole of a substance. You have learned also that molar mass
is the mass in grams of one mole of a substance expressed as g/mol.

In your grade 7 lessons, you also knew about compounds. Compound as you might recall is a substance made
up of two or more elements.

Taking for example, water (H2O) is a compound. It has the element Hydrogen and Oxygen. It has a molar mass
of 18 g/mol and consist of 2 moles of Hydrogen atoms and 1 mole of oxygen atom. In this lesson, you will apply
your knowledge about compounds and the mole concept in order to determine the percentage composition of a
substance, in particular compounds.

Percentage Composition plays an important role in our daily life such as in industry, pharmacy, agriculture
and construction. It really helps us to understand the percentage of each element in our environment. For example,
a farmer wants to strengthen the root system of his plants. A way to find the amount of nutrients is by knowing
the percentage composition of potassium in fertilizer because this element helps to strengthen the roots.

Percentage Composition from a Chemical Formula of a compound


The percent composition of a compound can be determined from the chemical formula of a compound.
The subscripts in the formula are first used to calculate the mass of each element in one mole of a compound.
Then it will be divided by the molar mass of the compound, and then multiply by 100%. The formula is given
below.

From the given formula, you can get the percentage composition by knowing the following data first:
1. The elements present in the compounds
2. Atomic mass of each elements
3. Number of atoms of each element
4. The Molar mass

What Chemicals Are In Cigarette Smoke?


Experts say that cigarette smoke contains over 4,000 different compounds. A significant
number of them are toxic (poisonous) and can damage our cells and many of them are carcinogenic
(cause cancer). If you’ve ever wondered exactly what you might be breathing in when you inhale
cigarette smoke, this list is a real eye opener. We’ve listed information on a few compounds found in
tobacco and cigarette smoke. Acetone – this chemical is used in solvents. It irritates the eyes, nose
and throat. Long-term exposure can damage the liver and kidneys.

Ammonia – it is known to cause asthma and raise blood pressure. Ammonia is used in cleaners.
Acetone – this chemical is used in solvents. It irritates the eyes, nose and throat. Long-term exposure
can damage the liver and kidneys.
Benzene – used in gasoline, causes several cancers, including leukemia
Formaldehyde – part of the resin used in foam insulation, plywood, fiberboard and particleboard. It
can cause nasal cancer, as well as damaging the digestive system, skin and lungs.
Lead – lead damages the nerves in the brain, as well as the kidneys and the human reproductive
system. Lead intake can also cause stomach problems and anemia. Lead is used in paint and metal
alloys.
Nickel – a known carcinogen, nickel also causes bronchial asthma and upper respiratory irritation.
Toluene – causes confusion, memory loss, nausea, weakness, anorexia, and drunken movements. It
is also associated with permanent brain damage. The chemical is used in resins, oils and solvents.
Nicotine – this is not carcinogenic. However, it is highly addictive. Smokers find it very hard to quit
because they are hooked on the nicotine. Nicotine is an extremely fast-acting drug.
Carbon Monoxide – this is a poisonous gas. It has no smell or taste. Carbon monoxide decreases
muscle and heart function, it causes fatigue, weakness, and dizziness.
