CHD-212 CHEMICAL ENINEERING TERMODYNAMICS-I
Duration: 1.5 hrs Max. Marks: 30

Note
1. Attempt all questions.
2. Assume appropriate data wherever necessary
Q1. Saturated steam at 99.63oC condenses on the outside of a 5-m long, 4-cm-diameter thin horizontal
copper tube by cooling liquid water that enters the tube at 25oC at an average velocity of 3 m/s and
leaves at 45oC. Liquid water density is 997 kg/m3, Cp of liquid water is 4.18 kJ/kgoC. (a) Determine
the rate of heat transfer to water. (b) If the rate of heat transfer to water is 200 kW, determine the rate
of condensation of steam. Data: The sp. enthalpy at 99.630C for saturated Vapour = 2675 kJ/kg, and
saturated Liquid = 417.5 kJ/kg [10]
Q2. A three-litter tank contains two gram-moles of nitrogen at -150.8oC. Estimate the tank pressure
using the ideal gas equation of state and then using the virial equation of state truncated after the
second term. Taking the second estimate to be correct, calculate the percentage error that results from
the use of the ideal gas equation at the system conditions. Data for nitrogen: Tc = 126.2 K, Pc = 33.5
atm, and ω = 0.04012. [10]
Q3. Attempt the following; [5+5 = 10]
(a) Determine the electrical work required to produce one mole of hydrogen in the electrolysis of
liquid water at 298 K and 1 atm. The chemical reaction is as follows;
H2O(l) → H2(g) + 0.5O2(g)
Data (at 298 K and 1 atm): ΔH = 286 kJ for this reaction, SH2O = 70 J/K, SH2 = 131 J/K, and SO2 = 205
J/K.
(b) Derive the mathematical expression to show the effect of temperature on heat of reaction.
