Chapter 55 - Stabilizer

This document discusses the horizontal stabilizer of the Agusta AB139/AW139 helicopter. It describes the stabilizer's purpose of generating downlift to balance the helicopter's pitch attitude in forward flight. It also notes that the left wing has a higher pitch than the right to create equal aerodynamic incidence. Maintenance information includes checking free play and inspecting bushings for wear. Diagrams show the stabilizer installation and tail plane assembly.

DESCRIPTION

The Tail Plane has been designed to generate a down lift to

equilibrate the helicopter pitch attitude. In high speed forward
flight conditions the nose down pitch attitude is given by:

 The control moment generated by the main rotor.

 The aerodynamic moment due to the horizontal main
rotor thrust applied at the rotor head while the
fuselage drag applied near the center of gravity of the
rotorcraft.

The left wing of tail plane has more pitch while the right wing
of tail plane has less pitch; in this way the aerodynamic
incidence is the same for the two wings and then the
aerodynamic forces will be the same.

MAINTENANCE INFORMATION

 Check free play of the tail plane.

 Visually inspect elastomeric bushings for rub extrusion.
