I. LEARNING OBJECTIVES

2. differentiate the types of speech according to purpose and;
3. apply learning, thinking skills, and life skills through writing speech.

II. INTRODUCTION
A speaker communicates for a reason, which we call the functions of communication discussed on the
previous lesson. but a speaker also creates a speech based on the purpose he or she wants to achieve. These
purposes are also called Goals of Speech. It becomes obvious as the speaker shows through the speech what
he/she wants to achieve. The speaker through the speech can make one think, change one’s mind, or laugh.

III.DEVELOPMENT
The purpose of the speech is studied in order to deepens one knowledge and learn how to apply them on
one’s own speech. There are types of speeches according to purpose from which you can choose the best one or
the most appropriate in a given situation.

A. 3 TYPES OF SPEECH ACCORDING TO PURPOSE

The speaker organizes according to the purpose of the speech. This speech purpose decides what information
goes into the speech and what does not.

1. An EXPOSITORY OR INFORMATIVE SPEECH provides the audience information history, theories,

 New
data
 Data that are not readily available to everyone
 The data already known by the audience but looked at in a different way.
Guidelines in Writing an Expository or Informative Speech
 It must have a message prepared at the level of knowledge of the speaker (so one does not sound like
know-it-all)
 It must be tailored to fit the level of knowledge of the audience. (so one does not make it
incomprehensible)
 It has to take into account age, gender, social status, religion, cultural affiliation of the Listeners. (to
avoid offending anyone)
With a clear understanding of a concept or idea and it needs date to impart. The lectures of your teachers are
the best examples of this type.

2. An ENTERTAINMENT SPEECH amuses the audience but not a comedy sketch only. The purpose is not
only to tell a series of jokes. Neither it is the purpose of the speaker to have the audience laughing throughout
the speech. To make listener smile or feel lighthearted after the speech is enough. It must lead the audience
into looking something familiar in a totally different and completely harmonious light by providing a
comparison and contrast, especially with the stranger or unusual; highlighting the quirks of important
personages such as officials, actors, celebrities, and athletes.
Guidelines in Writing an Entertainment Speech
 It must have a message prepared at the level of knowledge of the speaker. (you are there to entertain
and not to show off)
 It must be tailored to fit the level of knowledge of the audience. (a simple presentation works every
time)
 It has to take into account age, gender, social status, religion, cultural affiliation of the Listeners. (so as
not to offend any of them)
It may or may not use data unless that data can be used in harmonious way. The humorous speeches of
comedians and performers are the best examples of this type.

3. A PERSUASIVE SPEECH which goal is to change the listener’s opinion, attitude, or belief regarding a
certain topic by providing materials that can or will help convince the listener. It also seeks to provide the
audience with favorable or acceptable ideas that can influence their own ideas and decisions. It will need
specific data that will help the speaker in changing minds of the Listeners and move them into action.
Guidelines in Writing a Persuasive Speech
 It must have a message at the level of knowledge of the speaker (given that one does not know
everything)
 It must be tailored to fit the level of knowledge of the audience (they will not like being talked down
to)
 It has to take into account age, gender, social status, religion, cultural affiliation of the Listeners. (try
not to offend anyone)
