OBJECTIVE TEST
Introduction
Objective type test occupy a unique place as there is no ambiguity or a bias in their scoring. Any person ,
even a machine (computer) can score an objective type test . Objective type test items can also be used
effectively in class room provided the teacher is well versed in their construction because constructive a good
objective types test item is as difficult as it is easy to score.

Definition
Acc. to . w wiersma and g jurs, 1990.

objective test items are that can be objectively scored items on which on which person select a response from
the list of options .

Advantages
1. easy to score .
2. objectivity in scoring
3. more extensive and representative sampling can be done
4. economy of time for both examiner and examinee .
5. it eliminates extraneous factors for example speed of hand writing , spelling , grammar and
neatness
6. it measures higher mental processes of understanding and application .

Disadvantages .
1. takes a lot of times and efforts in preparing the test .
2. guessing is possible.
3. printing cost is high.
4. construction of item is difficult.

Types Of Objective Type Question

1. supply type test items.

2. true – false or alternative response item .

3. multiple choice item .

4. matching item .

Supply Type Test Items

The short answer item and completion item are supply type test items. that can be answered by a word ,
phrase , number or symbol. they are essentially the same , differing only in the method of presenting the
problems. Short answer items uses a direct question , where as the completion item consist of an incomplete
statement .

example.

1. short answer- what is the name of the man who discovered penicillin ? (Alexander Flemming)

2. completion :- --------- discover penicillin .(Alexander Flemming)

Uses .
The short term answer is suitable for measuring a wide variety of relatively simple learning outcomes. such as
knowledge of terminology knowledge of specific facts.

True False
The alternative response items consist of a declarative statement that the student is asked to mark true or
false, right or wrong , correct or incorrect, yes or no , agree or disagree .

Uses Of True –False Item.

To measure the ability to identify the correctness of statements of facts , definition of terms, statement of
principle .

Multiple Choice Item .

Multiple choice item is the most widely used and useful type of objective test items. in addition to measuring
simple learning outcomes , it can measure a variety of more complex outcomes in the knowledge ,
understanding and application areas .

for example-

which one of the following glands produce growth hormone.

a. Thyroid.

B .Adrenal cortex.

c. Anterior pituitary.

d.pancreas.

Characteristics Of Multiple Choice Item.

Multiple choice item consists of a problem and a list suggestive solutions .the student is typically requested to
read the stem and the list of alternative and to select the one correct or best alternatives . The correct
alternative in each item is called the answer or key and the remaining alternative are called distracters .

example

stem insulin is secreted by-

1. pancreas--------answer
2. thyroid.
3. hypothalamus.
4. adrenal cortex.

Uses Of Multiple Choice Items .

It can measure a variety of learning outcomes from simple to complex and it is adaptable to most types of
subject matter content .

example 1- knowledge of terminology .

which one of the following terms has the same meaning as the word newborn?

1.infant

2. toddler

3.neonate

4.pubescent

example 2- knowledge of specific facts .

when did florence nightingale start her nursing school?

a . 1901

b.1862

c. 1865

d. 1904

Matching Item
Matching exercise consist of two parallel columns, with each word, number of symbol in one column being
matched to a word , sentence or phrase in the column .

for example,

Match The Followings .

Gland Hormone
Pituitary Insulin
Thyroid Oxytocin
Pancreas Thyroxine
Advantage
1. Many questions can be asked in a limited period of time , because they require relatively little
reading time.
2. Matching test can be constructed relatively easily and quickly.
3. Comparatively the scoring is also easier.

Disadvantage
1. If sufficient care is not taken in their preparation , they may encourage serial memorization
rather than association.
2. It is sometimes difficult to get clusters of questions that are sufficiently a like so that a
common set of responses can be used.
3. Generally they provide clues , i.e. items are likely to include irrevelent clues to the correct
answer.

Summary
in this topic we have discussed , introduction to objective type test advantage of objective type test
disadvantage of objective type test types of objective type questions. supply type test items, true/false,
multiple choice. matching items.

Conclusion
objective items are highly structured and requires the student to supply a word or two or select the correct
answer from a number of alternatives.
