SUBJECT:
REMOTE KEYLESS ENTRY (RKE) TESTER

This bulletin provides information relating to a tester for Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) transmitters
that has been provided to all KMA retailers as a mandatory Special Service Tool (SST). This
device must be used to test all original factory equipment and dealer-installed Kia accessory RKE
transmitters prior to replacement under warranty.

This tester will also function with the Kia remote start and the 2005 RKE Sportage transmitters.

RKE TRANSMITTER PROCEDURES:


1. Press the "ONIOFF" button on the tester as
shown. The green "POWER" LED should
illuminate. If the LED does not illuminate,
replace the tester's 9-V battery before
continuing.

Place the transmitter to be tested within


1 inch of the RKE tester.

3. Press a button on the transmitter. The RKE tester should beep when a radio frequency (RF)
signal is detected that is strong enough to light five or more LEDs. The red LED segments
indicate the relative signal strength. Repeat this step for each of the transmitter buttons.
Note: For trunk release and panic alarm buttons on some models, the transmitter button may
need to be held down for at least two seconds before a RF signal is sent. To avoid
unwanted system activation, it is recommended that transmitter testing be conducted away
from the vehicle, if possible.

TROUBLESHOOTING:

No signal detected when any of the transmitter buttons are pressed:


Replace the transmitter battery (refer to Parts Bulletin AY-0013 for PINS) and re-test the
transmitter. If the tester does not detect a signal after replacing the battery and re-testing, replace
the RKE transmitter. Labor operations are listed in Section 50-09 of the Labor Time Standard
manual. Refer to RKE transmitter battery voltage specifications below:

1. Verify RKE ConcernIDistance operation.


2. Verify Door LockIUnlock Operation.
3. Verify key transmitter state of charge with a Digital Volt Ohm Meter (DVOM)*
4. Program a known good RKE transmitter and verify operation.
5. Verify the power and grounds to the RKE module and the communication line between the
ETACSI ETWIS and the DLC connector. (Spectra/Sportage/Sedona/Optima)

DO NOT REPLACE the RKE transmitter, instead verify that the transmitter is properly programmed
and that the RKE system components installed in the vehicle are operating properly. Refer to
Technician Times, Volume 6, Issue 4, Page 5 and/or the RKE and Security Troubleshooting Guide
on kdealer.net for RKE programming and diagnosis guidelines.
