Lesson 1 Identify Values of Notes and Rests 2

This document discusses musical symbols and concepts, including: 1) It defines basic note values like half notes, quarter notes, and eighth notes, along with their associated rhythmic values. Rest symbols and their values are also introduced. 2) Several musical time signatures are explained, like 4/4, 3/4, and 6/8 time. The number of beats per measure and value of different notes are provided for each time signature. 3) Examples of well-known songs are given to demonstrate different time signatures, and body percussion exercises are provided to help understand rhythmic concepts.

Topic: Musical Symbols and Concepts

Learning Competencies & Code:

1. identifies the values of the notes / rests used in a particular song

Concept/Short Input:

In music, you always must move in time because it is made up of patterns of sounds moving

in time. Meaning, the notes and rests has time value which are presented by beats in measures.

Combining the notes and rests in making rhythmic patterns is interesting. Here, the way of

showing their value is by putting rhythmic number below each note. This is one of many methods in

music education to establish understanding values of notes and rest to particular songs.

Example:

Time Signature Symbol Name of Note/ Rest Count/Value

Half note two counts (1 2)

Half rest two counts but silence

Quarter note one count (1)

Quarter rest one count but silence

Eighth note ½ count (1 &)

Eighth rest ½ count (1 &) but silence

Sixteenth note ¼ count (1 e n d)

Sisteenth rest ¼ count (1 e n d) but silence

Table 1

The time signature are usually utilized in music with march tempo. Sometimes, early

Filipino composers used this tempo in their folksong renditions. This time signature has two counts in

a measure while quarter note receives one beat.

Let’s try body percussion by following the instructions below:

1. In steady beat, say “Zzzzz” sound for half note.
2. Stamp a foot in quarter notes.
3. Clap the hands in eight notes.
4. Tap the belly in sixteenth notes.

As you see, the rests are left blank because these are rhythmic patterns designated not to play

but still part of rhythmic counting. For further understanding, watching video from this link is

advised: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NHxVoGTdymY

Try this song below. Rhythmic numbers are written to show the value of each note.

Another time signature that count 3 quarter notes to each bar which often-used to give you a

waltz feel is . The value of the notes and rests are counted as shown in table 2.

Let’s practice body percussion by following the instruction.

1. In steady beat, say “Zzzzz” sound for half notes.
2. Stamp a foot in quarter notes.
3. Clap the hands in eight notes.
4. Tap the belly in sixteenth notes.
5. Use the music passage below

Develop your understanding and interest in time signature through this link.

"Moon River" is a song composed by Henry Mancini showing three beats in a measure while
quarter receives one beat.

The time signature also known as common time. The value of notes and rest showed in
table 3.

Time Signature Symbol Name of Note/ Rest Count/Value

Whole Note four counts (1234)
Whole Rest four counts (1234) but silence

Half Note two counts (1 2)

Half Rest two counts but silence

Quarter Note one count (1)

Quarter Rest one count but silence

Eighth Note ½ count (1 &)

Eighth Rest ½ count (1 &) but silence

Sixteenth Note ¼ count (1 e n d)

Sisteenth rest ¼ count (1 e n d) but silence

Table 3
In four-four time, there are four beats in a measure, quarter note receives one beat. To

understand further, please watch video on this link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Bt1BF1PC2k.

Let’s practice the body percussion.

1. In steady beat, say “Zzzzz” sound for whole notes and half notes.

2. Stamp a foot in quarter notes.

3. Clap the hands in eight notes.

4. Tap the belly in sixteenth notes.

5. Use the music passage below

The popular song Beauty and the Beast was composed by Alan Menken as a sound track for

one of the immortal tune of all time. Do you see the simple arrangement of notes and rests? Do you

think the modesty of it did make the song popular? Study the musical score below.

On the other hand, time signature resembles counting of beats that are explained in table 4.

Time
Symbol Name of Note/Rest Count/Value
Signature
Dotted Half Note six counts (123456)

Dotted Half Rest

six counts but silence
Half Note four counts (1234)

Half Rest four counts but silence

Dotted Quarter Rest three counts but silence

Quarter Note Two counts (12)

Eighth Note one count

Eighth Rest one count but silence

Sixteenth Note ½ count (1 &)

Sixteenth Rest ½ count but silence

Table 4
In time, the beats are six in a measure while eighth note receives one beat . For further

1.1 Magtanim ay di-biro for two-four ( );

1.2 Moon River for three-four ( );

1.3 Beauty and the Beast for four-four ( ); and

1.4 Perfect for six-eighth time signature ( ).

2. Let a family members play the music and sing the song while you are doing a

synchronized body percussion from the examples given above.

3. Steady beat must be applied at all-time and thus include poise and confidence to

complete the performance.

4. With the help of your family member, record a video of yourself playing the body
percussion. Submit to your teacher using the FB Messenger, Gmail, LMS, Google
Classroom or any platform that your teacher requires you.
5. This rubric below will be the teachers guide in giving you a score.
