Learning
(CLIL)
Teaching curricular subjects in English, also known as Content and Language Integrated Learning
(CLIL), is becoming more and more popular and requires a change in teachers’ skills set.
This course helps teachers understand CLIL methodology and apply good practice in the classroom.
The course helps teachers develop practical skills to introduce functional language, evaluate
language challenges and adapt classroom tasks and forms of assessment. This will help their
students understand the topics in a second language.
British Council recommends the course for teachers who are at the developing stage of the British
Council's Continuing Professional Framework: teachers who have more then two years' classroom
experience and who need to extend their skills and knowledge.
CLIL provides practical methods to help content teachers meet their objectives and effectively support
their learners in a second language.
It also helps English language teachers to become more specialised in bilingual education and to
support other teachers in team teaching or to teach other subjects themselves.
Participants in our pilots described the course as a life-saver and said that they have started to enjoy
teaching again. In one study, teachers were observed before and after the course. It was clear that
there was substantial improvement in the way the teachers presented their information. The students
were also communicating a lot more in English.
Course Materials
The topics for the workshops are based on the University of Cambridge TKT CLIL examination, but it
is far more than a preparation course and registration for the examination is optional.
Practical examples throughout the course reflect a range of subjects and age groups.

How is the course delivered?
The course can be delivered on line via Moodle by British Council or the partner institution can deliver
the course on their own Moodle server.
The course can be delivered as a whole or divided into up to three modules taken at different stages.
The course is primarily for development and individual units of the course can be used for teacher
training without assessment. However, there are two components that can be assessed: one 500-
word essay and one lesson plan with rationale. These provide assessment of participants who have
taken the whole course. Assessments are done locally.
The Teaching Knowledge Test: CLIL exam provides a formal Cambridge ESOL qualification.
There is a final course certificate with details of the units and number of hours. If the course is
delivered in modules, participants can also receive a certificate at the end of each module, as well as
the final certificate.
