Plumbers - basic formulae

Imagine that you have received various estimates from plumbers, and you want to compare
them.  First type in the information shown below:

You may need to widen some of the columns

Create a formula giving the total costs for the first company (Bodgit & Co.).  These will be the
sum of material and labour costs:

This is the answer you should get

Now copy this formula down to give the total figures for all of the companies.

Use the function wizard to create formulae giving the highest and lowest cost estimate:

The functions you need are MAX and MIN

Save your file as But will they turn up.xls, and close it down.
Favourite cartoon character
A new digital TV channel has conducted a poll to find the favourite children's TV character.
Type in the results are as follows:

The range of characters in the poll was quite limited!

Create a formulae which gives the total votes received by Tinky-Winky:

Tinky-Winky's votes are the sum of cells B4, C4 and D4

Copy this formula down to give the total votes for each of the characters.

Now add in a formula to give the total number of votes cast by each group, as follows:

Clearly boys are over-represented in this sample

Save this file as Popularity poll.xls, and close it down.

Exercise calories - choose your hours
Using the file shown above, choose how to allocate your day by filling in the number of hours
spent on each activity: ex-388

Make sure you don't have more than 24 hours in the day!

Create a formulae in cell D2 giving the total calories expended per activity, and copy this down.

Use the AutoSum tool to calculate the total number of calories you expend in this typical day:

Your figures will clearly be different from these

Save your file with the same name, and close it down.
Teletubbie exam marks - MAX, MIN and
AVERAGE
Using the file shown above, use the function wizard to create formulae giving: ex-389

 The best mark for each teletubbie for each subject

 The worst mark for each teletubbie for each subject

 The average mark for each subject across teletubbies

Your answer should look like this:

The 3 functions used are AVERAGE, MIN and MAX

Save your file as Teletubbie exam statistics, and close it down.

Filling in gaps in cheque list
Fill in the blanks in the file shown! ex-390

This is what the answers should look like

Save this file with the same name, then close it down.
Tallest building statistics
Add an additional column heading to this file in F1, to read Average height of each storey.

ex-391

Calculate this statistic for each building, by creating a formula for the first one and copying it
down.

At the bottom of your worksheet, calculate the statistics shown below:

These use MIN and MAX functions

Would you rather stay at the Ryugyong Hotel in North Korea or the Kingdom Centre in Riyadh?

Save this workbook as Building Statistics.xls, and close it down.

A-Team Basic Functions - MAX, MIN,
AVERAGE
At the end of the pilot episode of the A-Team the gang are comparing notes. Open the file shown
above to see their statistics.

Use the AutoSum tool to calculate the total number of bullets fired, and copy this across.

Imagine the totals for the entire series!

Use the function wizard to create formulae to calculate:

 The highest value for each column

 The lowest value for each column

 The average value for each column

Save this file with the same name, then close it down.
