INTRODUCTION
Good day SPCIANs! Welcome to this module. You will be learning a new topic this
week. This module will provide you with the correct use of Past and Past Perfect Tenses of
the verb in different situations. This will enable you to communicate well both in writing
and in speaking.
What have you observed in the picture? Write something about what the characters
are doing in the picture.
Examples:
Verbs have different forms, called tenses. The tense of a verb tells us when the action
happens.
There are many verb tenses but for this module we only focus on Past and Past Perfect
tenses.
1. Past tense shows that an action started and completed in the past and has no
relevance to the present time at all. It can also be used to describe how someone felt,
what their emotional condition was, at a point in the past.
Examples:
For most verbs, the simple past tense is created by adding -d, -ed or -ied at the
end of the word. These are called regular verbs.
On the other hand, an irregular verb is a type of strong verb, which has some
special rules for creating past tense forms. So, these verbs do not end with -d, -ed, or
-ied, rather they change their forms completely, in a sense that the irregular verbs
are transformed into an entirely different word.
Examples:
1. Let’s eat some of this pizza. I ate some yesterday and found it delicious.
→ In this example, the irregular verb eat is in base form. “Ate” is the past
simple form of “eat,” and “found” is the past simple form of “find.”
2. I want to build a sand castle like the one we built last year.
→ In this example, the irregular verb build is in base form. The irregular
verb built is the past simple form of “build”. When you look at the complete list of
examples, you’ll notice that built is also the past participle of the irregular verb
“build”.
→ In this example, the irregular verb brought is the past simple form of
bring. Came is the past simple and past participle form of "come".
2. Past Perfect Tense expresses the idea that an action happened before another
action in the past. It forms by combining had with the past participle of the main
verb. The had + past participle of the main verb (ex. had asked) is also called the verb
phrase.
Past Participle is used to modify nouns and pronouns. One example is the past
participle formed from irregular verbs may have endings like -en, -t, -d, and -n.
Examples include swollen, burnt, hoped, and broken. Some past participles remain
the same as the base forms of irregular verbs, like set and cut.
Examples:
A. Identify if the following sentences is in the past tense or past perfect tense.
Write PT for past tense or PPT for past perfect tense. Write your answers on the
blank space before the number.
C. Fill in the blanks with correct past tense and past perfect tense to complete
the sentences.
1. My sister ate all of the cake that our mother (bake) ___________.
2. The family________(buy) the house last January.
3. I could not remember the story we (learn) _____________.
4. She (drive) ____________ the car fast when his mother called.
5. Andrea _______(go) to school yesterday.
6. She______(come) to the movies with us last night.
