Time Frame Subject Matter Expected Task
Week 1-2 Human Respiratory System Perform Exercise:
BLOOD TYPING

Attend online symposium
Week 3-4 Heredity and Variations Family Tree
Week 5-6 Biodiversity and Evolution Slogan and Poster Making
Week 7-8 Photosynthesis and Respiration Alcohol Fermentation
MODULE 1 HUMAN RESPIARTORY AND CIRCULATORY SYSTEM QUARTER 1 WK 1 & 2

OBJECTIVES

1. Explain how the Respiratory and Circulatory systems work together to transport nutrients, gases,
and other molecules to and from the different parts of the body.
2. Infer how one’s lifestyle can affect the functioning of the respiratory and circulatory systems.
3. Write down a one week routine that includes taking care of respiratory and circulatory systems.

LESSON CONTENT

I. PRE - ACTIVITIES
A. Perform an exercise for five(5) minutes. After performing it, observe what happens to your body.
Answer the following questions:

1. What happened to your breathing exercise?

2. What happened to your heartbeat?

3. Did the color of your skin change during exercise? What might be the causes of this observed
change?

II. INTRODUCTION/ DEFINITION OF TERMS

In the human body, division of labor exists so that the different cell types can adapt to their
specific functions. All these cells work together to achieve good health. Each cells requires an
adequate supply of oxygen and nutrients to perform a specific task they need to get rid of the waste
products.

Circulatory System
1. Pulmonary (Lungs)  have a spongy textures and a moist
epithelium that serves as the respiratory
face.

2. Coronary (Heart)  the chambered muscular organ in

vertebrates that pumps blood received from
the veins into the arteries, thereby
maintaining the flow of the blood through
the entire circulatory system.

3. Systemic (system)  circulation that supplies blood to all the

body except the lungs.
HEART- is a hollow upside- down pear-shaped shell.

STRUCTURE OF THE HEART

Did you
know?

The weight
of a heart
in an
average
human
being is
300g.

PARTS FUNCTIONS
1.Left and Right Atria The right atrium receives deoxygenated blood
from systemic veins; the left atrium receives
oxygenated blood from the pulmonary veins.

2. Left and Right Ventricles The right ventricle pumps the oxygen-poor blood
to the lungs through the pulmonary valve. The
left atrium receives oxygen-rich blood from the
lungs and pumps it to the left ventricle through
the mitral valve. The left ventricle pumps the
oxygen-rich blood through the aortic valve out to
the rest of the body.
3. Septum A wall that separates right and left atrium.
4. Valve Connects each atrium to the ventricle below it.
A. Mitral or Bicuspid Valve A. Connects the left atrium with the left ventricle
B. Tricuspid Valve B. Connects the right atrium with the right
ventricle

THE HEART WALL

CONSISTS OF 3 LAYERS:

1. Epicardium  A thin outer layer smooth, slippery texture.

2. Myocardium  Smooth inner lining
3. Endocardium  Makes up the bulk of the heart, strong
cardiac muscle

BLOOD- carries and transport oxygen and nutrients

COMPONENTS

1. Red cells  Known as erythrocytes without nuclei. It

transport oxygen from lungs and carry away
carbon dioxide. Hemoglobin is a gas
transporting protein that makes up 95% of
the RBC.
2. White cells  Disease fighters. They are known as
leucocytes. Leucocytes are the first
responders for our immune system.
3. Platelets  Known as thrombocytes. They are blood
clotting factors. Hemophiiacs lacks the
ability to produce either blood clotting
factors. Platelets also helps fight infections.
4. Plasma  Carriers. It is aclear yellow tinted water 92%
sugar, fat, protein, and salt solution w/c
carries in the red cells, white cells, and
platelets.

SYSTEMIC CIRCULATIONS- It’s all throughout the body.

BLOOD VESSELS
1. Arteries  Oxygen rich blood enters. Aorta is the main
artery.
 Pulmonary artery carry oxygen- poor blood
away from the heart to the lung.
2. Veins  Waste products are collected and the waste
rich blood flow into the veins. It returns
blood to the heart, carry blood without
oxygen.
 Pulmonary veins carry oxygen rich blood
from the lungs to the heart.
3. Capillaries  Oxygen rich blood enters the capillaries
where the oxygen and nutrients are
released- tiny vessels.

PULMONARY CIRCULATIONS- It’s all in the lungs.

1. Inferior Vena Cava  Carries deoxygenated blood
2. Superior Vena Cava  Brings waste rich blood to the heart
3. R Atrium  Filled with waste rich blood
4. Tricuspid Valve  One way valve into the RV
5. Bicuspid Valve  One way valve into the LV
6.Aortic Valve  One way valve it exits the heart through the
aorta.
RESPIRATORY SYSTEM- the primary function of RS is to supply the blood with oxygen in order for the
blood to deliver oxygen to all parts of the body.

1. Mouth  Where oxygen enters

2. Nose
3. Trachea  Tube that enters the chest cavity
4. Lungs  Organ of respiration
5. Diaphragm  Muscles that lies across the bottom of chest
cavity
6. Larynx  Vocal chord; where speech sound are
produced
7. Trachea 
8. Bronchi  Two smaller tube
9. Bronchi tube  Lead directly into the lungs
10. Alveoli  Tiny sacs, exchange of gas
11. Bronchioles  Smaller tube

HARMFUL SUBSTANCES THAT CAN AFFECT THE CIRCULATORY AND THE RESPIRATORY SYSTEM:

1. Cigarette- irritation of the trachea

2. Air pollution- particulate matter in the air decreases life expectancy
3. Drugs(ex. StimuTobacco- contains radioactive compounds that are also known as carcinogenic.
4. lants, depressants, elicit strict drugs- cause blockages or internal bleeding

DISEASES OF THE CIRCULATORY SUSTEM:

1. Aortic Aneurysm- enlargement of the aorta

2. Atherosclerosis- an artery wall thickens as a result of the accumulation of calcium and fatty
materials such as cholesterol and triglycerides
3. Deep vain Thrombosis (DVT)- formation of blood clot in a deep vein (ex. Leg)
4. Polyarteritis Nodosa (PAN)- destyruction of blood vessels which become swollen and damaged
from attack by immune cells.
5. Arteriovenous Malformations (AVMs)- abnormal connection between artery and veins, bypassing
the capillary system

Heart: Is it
: for real???

LESSON SUMMARY

 Circulatory System- the system of organs and tissues, including the heart, blood, blood vessels,
lymph, lymphatic vessels and glands, involved in circulating blood and lymph through the body.

 Coronary circulation- the movement of the blood through the tissues if the heart.

 Heart- the chambered muscular organ in vertebrates that pumps blood received from the
veins into the arteries, thereby maintaining the flow of the blood through the entire
circulatory system.

 Blood- fluid consisting of plasma, blood cells, and platelets that is circulated by the heart
through the vertebrate vascular system, carrying oxygen and nutrients to and waste materials
away from all body tissues.

 RBC- a cell in the blood of vertebrates that transports oxygen and carbon dioxide to and from
the tissues.

 WBC- help protect the body from infections and diseases.

 Platelets- functions to promote blood clotting.

 Plasma- the clear, yellowish fluid portion of the blood, lymph, or intramuscular fluids in which
cells are suspended.

 Systemic Circulation- circulation that supplies blood to all body except to the lungs.

 Pulmonary Circulation- circulation of blood between the heart and the lungs.
