1. What conclusions can you draw from the practice of Health Informatics in the Philippines
- Health informatics is a rapidly changing field that touches nearly every aspect of the modern
health care organization. There have been several significant factors in shaping health
informatics including emerging technology, health care reform mandates, professional
organizational involvement, early computerized records and data storage efforts, and the
drive to improve patient safety and treatment outcomes. The definition and scope of
informatics continues to be defined and delineated into subspecialties, creating a focus on
specific areas of health information management. In the future, requirements for sharing of
information between organizations and with consumers will increase, and consumer demand
for transparency and comparison with national benchmarks will grow. Health informatics
must find ways to solve issues such as interoperability, electronic record system compatibility,
and standardized reporting of quality of care to consumers.
2. How would you help in the propagation of the use of Health Informatics in the Philippines?
What are your recommendations?
- First, the lack of health human resource interested in the field. At present, unlike in Medicine,
Health Informatics is only offered, as a Master’s degree in the University of the Philippines-
Manila with the main objective is to develop innovators in the field of Health informatics in
the Philippines. With the limited number of human resources, it is only understandable why
the progress of health informatics in the country is slow. Second, poor or lack of network
infrastructure. And lastly, many decision-makers in the health sector do not yet understand
the benefits of information technology. Because majority of health workers are not exposed
to technological advancement in healthcare system, the benefits are not yet known to many.
Other issues include confidentiality and privacy, complexity of the system making it difficult
for an average person to understand, and of course, the issue of funding.
3. What do you think is the future of Health Informatics that are on cloud set-up?
- Another key benefit of the cloud for the healthcare industry is flexibility, as providers can
scale resources up or down as needed. The cloud provides real-time and remote access to
applications and resources in a way that’s easy to use. Additionally, it reduces the total
deployment time of rolling out new applications. For leaders within such organizations, the
risk of a public data breach and consequent loss of public trust should be plenty of motivation
to focus their efforts on digitization. Certainly, for the healthcare industry, it’s impossible to
continue operating at a safe standard using the methods of the past.
