CONVERSATION BETWEEN LAWYERS AND A JUDGE

Lawyer 1: We have a matter lined up for the dowry case.


Judge: Yes go ahead. Present your case.
Lawyer 1: My client has been accused of demanding dowry. But he has been wrongly accused. He is innocent.
Judge: Well that I will decide that. To arrive at an impartial judgment, I need to hear facts of the case from both
the parties.
Lawyer 1: Sure. But before we proceed I would like to request you to move the date for the hearing to next
week as I have another case at the Supreme Court.
Judge: For that you need to submit a written request to me and to the opponent’s lawyer.
Lawyer 1: Sure my lord. I have already dispatched one copy to the concerned entity.
Judge: After receiving the approval from the plaintiff’s lawyer I will be decide upon the next date of hearing.
Lawyer 1: Thank you my lord for your consideration.
Judge: Does the plaintiff’s lawyer have something to say on the behalf of her client?
Lawyer 2: Yes my lord. My client was harassed for the dowry by her in-laws since the very next day of her
marriage. She was also physically assaulted by her husband and his family.
Lawyer 1: I object my lord. They just had a verbal fight on a trivial domestic issue.
Lawyer 2: They just had a petty argument and she got seriously injured. Isn’t that shockingly astonishing?
Lawyer 1: No! That’s absolutely not true.
Lawyer 2: Oh please! Your client is an unruly man and he belongs in prison.
Judge: Order! Order! Both the lawyers settle down and maintain the decorum of court. I would hear arguments
from both the sides in next hearing. By that time court is adjourned.
VOCABULARY: Plaintiff – person who levels charges against another person; Trivial – not important; Astonishing – very
surprising; Unruly – uncontrollable, wild; Adjourned – to stop an official proceeding

LAWYER: Based on what you’ve told me so far, it sounds like your competitor is infringing your trademark.
CLIENT: Exactly. And the potential damage to my business is tremendous. Besides the usual threatening
letters, what legal action can we take?
LAWYER: Well, there are several things we can do. First, we can file an action in the district court and move
for an injunction against your competitor. We need to show the probability of irreparable harm to your
business. If this outweighs the probable harm to their business while the case is pending, we can get a
temporary injunction. This injunction will prevent them from using the trademark, on pain of fine.
CLIENT: I’m sure they’ll challenge that. They won’t confess to the claim.
LAWYER: Right. Actually, ‘confess’ is used in criminal cases. In civil cases we say ‘admit the claim’.
CLIENT: Of course, a slip of the tongue.
LAWYER: We’ll also be seeking declaratory relief and damages for any and all compensable losses
you’ve suffered.
CLIENT: I know what damages are, but what’s declaratory relief?
LAWYER: It’s a declaration by the court that you are the rightful owner of the trademark. As for damages, if
we’re going to be able to recover your losses we’ll first have to prove them. I’d like one of my associates to
meet with your people to start gathering evidence.
CLIENT: That’s fine – as soon as possible.
LAWYER: What do you think the chances are of settling with your competitor?
CLIENT: Poor. It’s a very bitter feud.

Conversation Between Employee and Boss in Lift


People involved in the conversation: Raheem (the boss), Samina (the employee).
Scenario: Samina is already in the lift, which opens in front of Raheem.
How does a conversation between the two go?

Raheem: Hi, is this lift going up?


Random person: Yes, sure.
Raheem: Thank you.
Samina: Raheem Sahab Assalaam O Aleikum! How are you?
Raheem: Oh Samina, you are here…I thought you were away for the onsite project?
Samina: Oh no Sir, that got cancelled. The project has been postponed till January. Didn’t Asif Ali email you? I
thought he did.
Raheem: He must have. I have had a very hectic schedule this past week. I am yet to check the emails of the
past few days.
Samina: Oh sure. By the way, Jamila from HR asked me to set up a meeting regarding the client pipeline for
the next quarter. I was just going to mail you for permission concerning the same. Better to save time and ask
you right now!
Raheem: Absolutely. Go ahead with it! Just drop me a mail afterwards so that it remains in record.
Samina: I will do that. I hope your father is doing well? He had an angioplasty surgery recently, right?
Raheem: Yes, by God’s grace he is all right now. It was really a period of tension for my family. Thankfully, all
went fine. He is doing well now and should be discharged soon.
Samina: Great to hear that. Family is everything.
Raheem: It indeed is. I guess our floor is here. I will catch up with you once I am done with my pending emails.
Samina: Sure thing! Okay Sir, I will be at my desk. There are no appointments scheduled for me today. Please
let me know if there is any critical update.
Raheem: Sure thing. Cya then.
