M2 Pre-Task: Application Software - System Software Driver Software Programming Software

The document defines and categorizes different types of software. It discusses application software, system software, driver software, programming software, freeware, shareware, open-source software, closed source software, and utility software. Application software performs specific functions for users, while system software coordinates hardware and runs applications. Driver software controls devices. Programming software is used by developers. Freeware is free to use without restrictions, shareware is initially free but may require payment, open-source code is modifiable, and closed source code is inaccessible. Utility software optimizes computer resources.

M2 Pre-task
1. What is software?
• Software is a generic term used to refer to
applications, scripts and programs that run on a device. It can
be thought of as the variable part of a computer

2. What are the types of software? Differentiate them

• Application Software - The most common type of
software, application software is a computer software
package that performs a specific function for a user, or in some
cases, for another application.
• System Software - These software programs are designed
to run a computer's application programs and hardware.
System software coordinates the activities and functions of the
hardware and software.
• Driver Software. Also known as device drivers, this
software is often considered a type of system software.
• Programming Software - Computer programmers use
programming software to write code. Programming software and
programming tools enable developers to develop, write, test
and debug other software programs.

3. Classify the following as to what type of software

1. MS Excel – Spreadsheet Software-Application software
2. Photoshop – Multimedia software - Application software
3. Skype- Communication Software- Application software
4. Mac – System software
5. Linux – System software
6. Eclipse- Programming software
7. Coda- Programming software
8. Notepad- Word processing software – Application Software
9. Network Card - Driver software
10. Mouse Driver- Driver software

4. What are the 5 additional subcategories of software?

Describe them
• Freeware
• Shareware
• Open-Source Software
• Closed Source Software
• Utility Software

▪ Freeware means there are no paid licenses required to use the

application, no fees or donations necessary, no restrictions on how many
times you can download or open the program, and no expiration date.
▪ Shareware is commercial software that is distributed free to users,
eventually either requiring or encouraging users to pay for the continued
support of the software.
▪ Open-Source Software licenses promote collaboration and sharing
because they permit other people to make modifications to source code
and incorporate those changes into their own projects. They encourage
computer programmers to access, view, and modify open-source software
whenever they like, as long as they let others do the same when they share
their work.
▪ Closed Source Software (also known as proprietary software), the
public is not given access to the source code, so they can’t see or modify
it in any way.
▪ Utility software is a set of tools that helps configure, analyze and
optimize computer resources to help users perform multiple tasks
efficiently. The best Utility Software provides key functionality such as data
compression, data recovery, disk defragmentation, computer resources
and files management, system diagnosis, and more.
