Quick Assignment 1

This document summarizes and compares conventional and unconventional yarn spinning systems. The conventional ring spinning system produces high quality yarn but has limitations such as lower production speeds and higher costs. Unconventional systems like rotor spinning can produce yarn at much higher speeds of 300m/min compared to 30m/min for ring spinning. However, unconventional yarns differ in character from ring spun yarn. While more expensive initially, the author believes unconventional systems are preferable for their ability to meet high production demands and reduce labor costs through automation.

Introduction

The spinning process has undergone impressive development since the first machine
replaced the old spinning wheel. Yarn quality has been substantially improved, spinning speed
markedly increased, and the labour cost per kg of yarn drastically reduced. This development is still
going flat out. When we talk about the old and new spinning system, there are pro and contra by
using the conventional and unconventional of spinning system. Even though there are many modern
spinning system have been invented in this century such as open-end Rotor Spinning, Air-jet
Spinning and a few else but, whatever the merits of such invention , and their potential future
market penetration, the traditional ring spinning technique still reigns supreme.

The advantages and disadvantages of Conventional Spinning System

To explain this conventional system just looks at the Ring Spinning System. Ring
spun yarn is considered as ideal yarn in which all other yarns from new spinning system are
compared with. The fibres in ring spun yarn are intermingled throughout the yarn structure
fibre migration and therefore have good looking together of fibres and inter-fibre frictional
contact. The yarn also has better fibre extent results in high fibre length utilization and,
consequently fibre strength utilization. The type of the yarn that can be use is from the low
quality till high quality of yarn. It is universally applicable which mean any material can be
spun.

The limitations and disadvantages of the ring spinning system can be limited traveler
speed due to the generation of the heat. This will result to limited delivery speed, limited
spindle speed and limited production output. This conventional spinning system experience
labor intensive machinery. It is also produce only limited package mass in the form of cops
which mean the production is still low compare to modern spinning system. High spinning
productions costs about 60 per cent is also become one of the problems by using this
conventional system. This is because of high energy consumption. The ring spinning system
also prone to several problems in production such as end-breaks, fly liberation and roller
lapping which limit the production output.

The Advantages and Disadvantages of Unconventional Spinning Process

The most widely-accepted and used modern spinning methods today are rotor spinning,
friction spinning, wrap spinning and air-jet spinning. The characteristics of these methods are
determined by their spinning components, and the yarn produced with se machines exhibit different
structure and characteristics from that ring spun yarns. The aim of all the new spinning system is to
produce yarns at a higher speed economically. The criteria that must be met by any new spinning
technology in order to established itself are to improved economy in comparison to other known
technologies, acceptable yarn characteristics, measured by ring spun standard, high flexibility with
fast material movement through the spinning mill and high degree of automation.

The advantages of new spinning systems are this system can produce high volume of production
rates. For examples, rotor spinning can produce 300m/min compared to ring spun system that only
can produce 30m/min. The yarn is wound into bigger packages up to 5 kilogram. The system will
eliminate the process such as roving and winding. It is also relative ease of automation such auto link
and so on.
There are also disadvantages of new spinning system. The yarn character very much
different from ring spun yarns. This system has difficulties in maintaining consistent uniform yarn.
The market segment for the yarns is limited to a narrow count range, specific raw material types,
and only specific end products. This system is also needs high level of process know-how such as
software and programming. It is also need high expenditure on repair and maintenance.

In my opinion, I will choose unconventional system if I want to invest and apply the system
in my spinning mill. This is because, even though it is quite expensive but this system producing high
production rates and output. So the demand of the customer can be fulfill on time and the profit can
be increase. Besides that, this system are also can reduce the labor cost because the system almost
fully automatic.
