Field Experience

In the past four years, I have had the opportunity to work in both the elementary
and high school. These experiences have given me a chance to work with
experienced teachers and learn about the inner workings of a successful modern
classroom. I have had to build relationships with the students to enhance their
willingness to learn. The following are brief descriptions of each of my
experiences.

Madison Elementary School – 2018/2019 School Year

During the 2018/2019 school year I worked as a substitute teacher at Madison
Elementary School. I worked in several different classrooms and different grade
levels throughout the year. Sometimes my assignment would be in a single
classroom in which I had to work with one group of students on all their general
subjects. This gave me great insight on how to structure a day in an elementary
classroom. I was able to work with small groups and large groups of students on
their daily lessons. I used the teacher’s carefully planned lessons which included
hands-on activities, video clips for visual learners, and lectures. I also substituted
for the gym, art, and technology teacher. This experience taught me how to work
with different age groups. I learned the importance of good classroom
management in order to accomplish the tasks required for the day. In addition, I
substituted as a paraprofessional in the special education room at Madison High
School. This led to my current field experience.

Madison High School – 2018 – present

I am currently working as a paraprofessional in the Madison High School
special education room. I work with small groups of students or individuals in a
variety of classes. I assist students with homework and projects and have created
study materials using technology to prepare them for tests. This has been a
valuable experience for me because I work with students of varying abilities. I
have built a strong relationship with each of the students which makes them more
willing to complete their assignments. This experience has strengthened my desire
to become a teacher and has shaped the kind of teacher I will be.
