Assignment Name
Your Title (Not Assignment Name) Make sure this is centered.
Indent new paragraphs, do not add extra lines between paragraphs. They should aligned
to the left. Remember, English is always aligned to the left unlike Arabic. You can add an extra
line under the title. When you set up the page formatting, notice that there is a lot of space
between my lines. Those are not added lines but ‘spacing.’ In MS Word you go to the Home
tab>Line and Paragraph Spacing, selected Double or 2. In Mac pages you can find it under the
Format tab.
The font must be Times New Roman, 12 point font. Remember, teachers are looking at
the word count. If you change the font to look bigger it’s easy to see, as a matter of fact that’s the
first thing most teachers think. The size of the assignment, if a good teacher gave it, is based on
how long it takes to write an essay that completes the idea with enough detail. Most good
teachers don’t care how long an essay is if you wrote it well. However, you may not know when
your idea is complete.
When quoting something or using it as evidence, make sure to make it clear. You need to
italicize all titles of books for example, The Republic by Plato. If you want to use an article or
chapter you put the title of the chapter in quotation marks and also italicize the title of the book
or journal, for example, “Book III,” The Republic, by Plato or “Ghost Dance,” by Janet Maslin in
The New York Times.
An important thing to notice is that when you use quotation marks, you should put any
punctuation inside the quotation marks. For example, “All philosophy is a reference to Plato.”
The period is not outside the quotation marks but inside. This goes for commas or any other
punctuation.
You can use this as your template when writing papers. Save this to your computer and use it in
this class. I highly recommend you use this for other teachers. No matter what, this will give all
your writing a professional look. This is called Chicago Style and is a standard academic writing
form. You will be using something similar to this in university.
