Definition Spa

Spas originated from locations where mineral-rich springs were used for their healing properties. There are two theories for the origin of the word "spa": from the Latin phrase "Salus per Aquam" meaning "health from water" or from the Belgian town of Spa where Roman soldiers were treated. Spas offer treatments like massage, mud baths, and steam rooms to relax the body and mind. Visiting a spa can reduce stress, improve mood, support anti-aging, boost circulation, and increase happiness through the release of serotonin. There are different types of spas including day spas for single treatments, spa hotels located at resorts, medical spas that combine treatments with a doctor's supervision

Where does the word spa come from?

Although there is no clear answer as to where the word spa began to be associated with healing
practices, but there are two main theories about the term’s etymology:
'Spa’ is an acronym of the Latin phrase ‘Salus per Aquam’, meaning ‘health from water’.
‘Spa’ is named after the Belgian village, Spa, where hot mineral springs were used by
Roman soldiers to treat aching muscles and wounds from a battle.
Spa - A spa is a location where mineral-rich spring water (and sometimes seawater) is used to
give medicinal baths. Spa towns or spa resorts (including hot springs resorts) typically offer
various health treatments. The belief in the curative powers of mineral waters goes back to
prehistoric times.
Spa offers body treatments that include sauna, whirlpool, jet bath, steam room, massage, mud
bath, salt scrub, seaweed body wraps, clay or herbal body masks, reflexology and waxing.

ELEMENTS OF SPAS
(Relax) HELPS TO DE-STRESS
Visiting a spa is a fantastic way to relax and de-stress. A visit to the spa offers a great
opportunity to separate yourself from life’s everyday stressors and have some precious ‘me
time’. Allowing yourself this time to wind down and relax has so many additional benefits, such
as a clear mind and increased productivity once you leave your treatment!
(Reflect) HELPS WITH ANTI-AGEING
Meditation can even help slow the effects of aging
Many spa treatments can actually help with anti-ageing. Facials are known to help delay and
prevent the onset of wrinkles by stimulating skin cells and hydrating the skin. Additionally,
generally giving yourself time to relax and de-stress is a great anti-ageing technique in itself! It
can be hard to afford the time for relaxation day-to-day, but assigning yourself some time to do
so at the spa can be extremely advantageous.

(Revitalize) REJUVINATE (Grooming you to perfection)

Taking good care of the body and pampering your needs can directly reflect on your skin and
increase your radiance. A proper session can heal you from inside out and release harmful toxins
from the body. By paying detailed attention to body care, one can fight the signs of ageing and
reduce the blemishes on the skin.
(Improved blood pressure and circulation)
The long-term effects of a massage therapy are more than skin deep. An hour of spa facilitates
the circulation of blood because the pressure created by the massage technique moves the blood
through congested areas. With improved blood circulation, the blood pressure also naturally
lowers. Moreover they release the unhealthy toxins that we acquire over time.
(Rejoice) INCREASED HAPPINESS
Among the many benefits of spa treatments is the biological effect it has on your body,
particularly in regards to your happiness levels. Massages at the spa are known to release
serotonin, which is the hormone associated with happiness, and thus helps to improve your mood
once your massage has finished! This doesn’t just have an effect post-massage, but you can reap
the benefits of this boost for the following days too.

TYPES OF SPAS
Day Spas
Luxurious stretch of time in which to indulge, most day spas offer single treatments ranging from
30 minutes to two or more hours. This allows you to pop in for a quick wax or facial in your
lunch break, or combine several therapies for the ultimate pamper package. So this means it is
not offering any accommodations.
Spa Hotels
A spa that is located in or on the grounds of a hotel or resort. It is quite common for upscale
resorts and beach front hotels to have spas where guests can enjoy a number of services and
beauty treatments. The most common services that are offered on hotel spa menus are massages,
manicures, pedicures, and facials. Depending on the facility, hotel spas may also come equipped
with steam rooms and saunas for guests to enjoy between treatments.
It is common for a hotel spa to allow guests to book treatments in their rooms instead of in the
spa. In fact, some hotel spas are quite small and conduct most of the services in guest rooms or
suites rather than in dedicated rooms within the spa facilities. For treatments that are conducted
within a hotel room, the massage therapist, esthetician, or nail technician will bring all necessary
supplies to the guest's hotel room. Some hotel spas also offer hair care and have beauticians on
hand who can take care of guests who need to have their hair cut, colored, or styled.
Medical Spas
A medical spa is a hybrid between a medical clinic and a day spa. Medical spas operate under the
supervision of a medical doctor. While visiting a medical spa, patients are able to be pampered
with traditional spa services but also have the options of medical spa services such as lasers,
botox, and fillers.
Medical spas, sometimes referred to as medi-spas or medspas, seek to combine some medical
procedures normally performed in a doctor’s office with the experience of a day spa.
There is a particular focus on anti-aging treatments. Indeed, now medical spas can offer non-
surgical anti-aging treatments that were once performed only at a doctor’s practice. However, in
some jurisdictions there is a requirement that medical spas be owned and operated by a qualified
physician.
Holistic Spas
The techniques used in a holistic spa are linked with generations old healing treatments. These
spas are therapeutic baths containing strong herbs and body scrubs to massage your body.
