Activity No. 3 The Cell As A School (Module-1)

The document compares parts of a cell to roles in a school. It provides a table that lists organelles and their functions in the cell, and then identifies analogous roles or locations in a school. For example, it notes that the cell membrane controls what enters and exits the cell, similar to the front office. It then provides descriptions of the functions of other organelles like mitochondria, lysosomes, and the Golgi bodies and their school counterparts, such as the generator and mailroom. The document aims to illustrate how different parts of the cell carry out specialized functions, analogous to specialized roles in a school.

Activity The Cell as A School

No. 1.1

A cell is like a school. Each part of the cell (and school) has responsibilities that
must be done and certain organelles (people or places) to do them. Identify the
functions of the following parts of the cell. Then, identify which person does the same
job (or a place like it) in the school. The first one is done for you as an example to
follow.

Organelle Function/Description Part of the school that has

a similar function
Cell Membrane Controls what goes in and Front Office
out of the cell

Cell Wall Extra protection for the plant Walls of the school
cell. Keeps the plant rigid.
Plant cell only
Cytoplasm Controls where you can go Halls of schools
and leaps you in place in the
school
Mitochondria *'Powerhouse' Generator, furnace or
*breaks down food to make heater
energy for the cell
*both animal and plant cells
Lysosomes They digest the waste and Trash can or dustbin
unwanted substances
Vacuoles Stores water, food and Storage room
protein. Both animal and
plant cells
Golgi Bodies Packages and transports Mailroom
proteins out of the cell to
other cells. Both animal and
plant cells
Endoplasmic Reticulum Rough Endoplasmic Rough Endoplasmic
Reticulum- a passageway Reticulum- hallways
that sends and delivers
proteins throughout the cell
*has ribosomes on it Smooth Endoplasmic
*both animal and plant cells Reticulum- hallways
Smooth Endoplasmic
Reticulum- passageway that
continues to move proteins
throughout the cell makes
lipids breaks down toxic
material both animal and
plant cells
Ribosomes Makes proteins for the cell Construction workers
both animal and plant cells
Nucleus Control center. Gives Main office; Principal's
instructions and controls office
cell's activities both animal
and plant cells
Chloroplast Makes food for the plant cells Cafeteria
*Plant cells only
Microfilament Microfilaments assist with cell Teacher
movement and are made of a
protein called actin.
Cilia Move water relative to the Sensors
cell in a regular movement of
the cilia
Peroxisomes Peroxisomes are responsible Composting garbage
for oxidation reactions that
break down fatty acids and
amino acids. Peroxisomes
oversee reactions that
neutralize free radicals, which
cause cellular damage and
cell death.
