ROTC (Editorial)
ROTC (Editorial)
Figuring out what the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) will lead us, will it
be praising or blaming the government? As the May elections ended, the House
of Representatives is poised to pass a bill reviving the said ROTC.
This bill directly impinges the interests of the youth, especially those aged 16 and
17 who have yet to take Grade 11 and 12. If the Duterte endorsed seatorial
candidates win on the deliberation of the bill, then it will certainly pass. If the
opposition win, the proposed revival of ROTC will fail.
One of its positive effects of ROTC for the youth is discipline. Discipline is being
offered and taught throughout the training. This youth becomes physically fit and
benefit physically from the training. And we know that trainings require alertness
and awareness to everything, and by the ROTC, the youth can be able to possess
those characteristics. Mental and emotional state of the youth is also trained and
improved throughout the training, given that endurance of pain from consistent
and tough raining is an expectation.
Yet disadvantages are also present in this bill, because we are not totally sure
whether it will be successful at the same time effective, and the initial intention of
this will be fulfilled. Because possibility is that contrary to the intention of the
proposed law, poorly designed mandatory ROTC will tend turn the youth against
the government, and kill in them whatever urge for selfless service to community
and country they may capable of.
