Philosophy, history, literature, art, music, and
language as their modes of expression. Through
these, we get to know how others have lived and

DISCUSSION
1.1 Contemporary Art
Contemporary art is the art that springs out of the present-
day events and passions of the society. It is the newest form of
art, amusing people from the middle to the late 20 th century up to
this very minute.
Contemporary art is produced by the 21st century artists
living in the postmodern age. It functions in a global society that is
culturally diverse and technology-oriented. It provides instances
for people to reflect and respond to contemporary social concerns
and issues pertinent to themselves and to the world. It is a
combination of mixed styles, materials, techniques, and concepts
that challenges tradition.
Contemporary works of art are the means through which
the artists of today communicate their sentiments.
Contemporary Art refers to current and very recent practice. It also refers to works of art
made by living artists.
Contemporary Art tends to be assessed thematically and subjectively, drawing on an
expanded range of theoretical and practical disciplines.
Contemporary Art can be driven by both theory and ideas, and is also characterized by a
blurring of the distinction between art and other categories of cultural experience, such as
television, cinema, mass media, entertainment and digital technology.

Contemporary Performance
• Contemporary performance is hybrid work that
integrates text, dance, objects, music, costumes, lighting,
image, sound, sets, and vocal expression into complex
interactive systems.
• Contemporary performance collages are often non-
narrative, technically rigorous, and carefully orchestrated
anarchic chaos. They unsettle perception, demand
critical engagement from audiences, address conceptual
debates within aesthetics, draw on a diverse range of
cultural interests, and bring pleasure to populations across the globe.” (Morgan v. P.
Pecelli)

questions, and practices that examine the past,
describe the present, and imagine the future.
1.2 The Subject of Art
Subject is any person, animal, thing, or issue that is
described or represented in a work. It is different from theme
or content (substance); theme is the recurring idea or
element in a work of art. The theme refers to the ideas,
thoughts, and feelings of the artist.
Everything under the sun is considered a subject in
the arts- from the simplest idea (e.g., happiness) or an
object (e.g., a wine bottle) to the most complicated ones, like
philosophical thoughts or dreamscapes. In visual design,
artworks with subjects that are recognizable are called
realistic, representational, or objective art. Those that are
not recognizable are nonrepresentational or nonobjective
art.

Different Ways of styles depicting a subject

✓ Realism- the subject is done the way it actually looks.
✓ Distortion- the artist uses his or her imagination and alters the subject according to
his/ her desire.
✓ Abstraction- the artist breaks apart a subject and rearranges it in a different manner.
✓ Non- objectivism- totally no subject at all- just an interplay of pure elements like line,
shape, or color, and so on.

1.3 The Elements of Art

1. Space
Space in visual arts can be defined as a void, an emptiness which can either be
positive or negative. The positive space refers to a space enclosed in a shape, while the
negative space denotes the opposite.
1. Line
Line is the extension of a point, a short or long mark drawn or carved on a surface.
It is an implied path suggesting – (a) direction: vertical, horizontal, diagonal (b) character:
jagged, curved, series of dots or broken lines.
2. Shape and Form
Shape can be described as a figure separate from its surrounding area or
background. It can either be geometric (angular) or organic (curvy).
Form is slightly similar to shape. It is an enclosed line, a figure separates from its
background. But, remember that shape is two-dimensional, while form is three-
dimensional. For instance, the square is an example of shape; the cube is a form. The
circle is a shape; the sphere is a form.

5
3. Color
Color is a sensation created by visible wavelengths of light caught in a prism. It is
a mixture of organic or synthetic substances called pigments, used as paint or dye. It
creates a mood or tone and have different meanings, depending on one’s culture
4. Value
In visual arts, value is the degree of lightness and darkness of a color.
In music, it is called pitch, which is the highness or lowness of a tone. The tone
color or timbre refers to the quantity of the sound.
5. Texture
Texture is the surface of an artwork. It can be actual or tactile, meaning, it can
really be felt by touch; or it can be simulated or illusory, which means it can only be seen,
not felt. In music or writing, texture is the quality or style of a composition. The sound from
different musical instruments allow one to hear texture in sound.

1.4 Principles of Design

1. Harmony
It refers to the wholeness of the design, the pleasing arrangement of parts, and the
agreement between parts of composition, resulting in a united whole.
2. Variety
It pertains to the assortment or diversity of a work of art.
3. Rhythm
It is the regular, repeated pattern in the elements of art. It is a flow, or feeling of
movement, achieved by the distribution of visual units of sound units in time.
4. Proportion
Elements in a work of art should have a relationship with one another. This
relationship is called proportion. A well – proportioned shape is pleasing to the eye.
5. Balance
It pertains to the even distribution of weight. It is the principle that deals with
equality. Two types of balance – formal balance and informal balance.
Formal balance, or symmetrical balance, refers to two sides that are identical to
each other. An example is a cross-sectional image of a butterfly. The spread wings of the
butterfly show balance in the image.
Informal balance, or asymmetrical balance, refers to two sides not identical to each
other yet equal in visual weight. Ikebana, the Japanese art of flower arrangement, is a
good example of a design that uses asymmetrical balance.

DISCUSSION
“The Philippines is a gold mine of art”
Introduction
Aside from our own indigenous arts, the Philippines has a
variety of many other art forms. Because of the four colonial periods in
our history-the Spanish, British, American, and Japanese- the art of the
Philippines had been influenced by almost all spheres of the globes. It
had a taste of the Renaissance, Baroque, and Modern Periods through
the colonizers who arrived in the country.

Then, when the rest of the world opened up to the idea of

postmodernism in the late 1900s. Philippines also welcomed the birth of
contemporary art. Its first appearance happened after the second world war and again
during the martial law era in the 1970s. Writers broke the laws by writing screams of
protest against the government. Filmmakers used their expertise in joining the
bandwagon of nationalistic artists.

Modernism in all art forms evolved into a variety of expressions and media
that turned the entire world into a “creative upheaval”. Even architecture
developed a modernist style. Many Filipino artists and architects became
adherents of the style. The architecture by National Artist Leandro Locain is an
example.

13
In the late 1900s, postmodernism appeared in the Philippines. The
postmodernism sought to contradict several aspects and ideas of modernism
that had emerged earlier. They believed that artist should no longer try to create
something “new”. All they needed to do was to “borrow, combine, explore” what
was already existing to produce something new. This gave birth to integrative
art, which is being practiced in the regions at present.
Pastiche

Postmodernism has several features. The most common feature is

pastiche, which refers to the blurring of divisions between fine art and
commercial art, high culture and low culture. And highbrow and lowbrow. It
also means artistic, musical, and literary works that come from diverse
sources-a mixture, a medley of different ideas. There is a sense of
fragmentation. There is also an interweaving web of stories which creates
paradoxes. However, note that pastiche celebrates the artwork from which
it derives inspiration and does not mock it.

Bricolage

Popularly used in visual arts. It refers in a creation or construction

that uses a diverse range of materials. A simplification of collage, bricolage
can also pertain to the use of words as the central artistic element. In the
literary arts, it is the use of varied sources of writing.

Appropriation

Also known as borrowing. Postmodernism

finds inspiration in artworks from the previous
periods. In music, there is a term “appropriation
performance”. This refers to the use of the style and
content of another culture for a performance.

Installation

Another popular feature includes installation art. It is an art

made indoors or outdoors where a
particular space is transformed
into a three-dimensional artwork. It
is made of diverse materials, using
a realistic or abstract style. It is a conceptual art that presents
diverse themes, but it is usually temporary.

National Art Centers in the Philippines

For many years, Manila has been regarded as the center of

cultural and artistic activities which gives an impression of exclusivity
to the people. Museums, theaters, and art centers abound, art galleries
thrive, and concerts and exhibitions are held regularly.

14
In the past, cultural events in the regions were limited inside the
regions. But now, because of the efforts and support of the Cultural Center
of the Philippines (CCP) and the National Commission on Culture and the
Arts (NCCA), there are now cultural and artistic centers in the various
regions of the country.

The Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP)

CCP was established in 1969 through Executive

Order No. 303. It goal was “to preserve, develop, and
promote arts and culture in the Philippines”. Regarded as
the premier showcase of the arts, it houses several resident
companies. It also provides a venue for concerts, theatrical
performances, and art exhibits here and abroad. It also
holds festivals.

In 2010, CCP embarked on an outreach program called “Ugnayan sa Sining” a program

that promotes regional arts through cultural interactions and exchange tours of accomplished
artists and art groups in the regions. The CCP is also in charge of the National Art Center in Mt.
Makiling, Los Banos, Laguna, which is the home of the Philippine High School for the Arts. The
school was established in 1976 for young and aspiring artists. Entrance to the school is highly
competitive and the student population is limited to ensure the quality of interaction. The students
are given full scholarship and living assistance. The school has produced many Filipino artists of
note such as Grace Nono, Sharmaine C. Buencamino, Nick Pichay, among others.

The National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA)

Like CCP, NCCA is responsible for “preserving, promoting, and

developing culture and the arts in the Philippines”. It was formed under
Republic Act No. 7356 in 1992. Serving as the main organizational body
for art development, NCCS is the overall policy-making body and
coordinator among cultural agencies, including the CCP. As one of its
mandates says, NCCA aims “to encourage artistic creations within a
climate of artistic freedom.”

NCCA has four sub commissions:

a. Sub commission on the Arts (SCA) which facilitates the

committees on Architecture and the Allied Arts, Cinema, Dance,
Dramatic Arts, Literary Arts, Music and the Visual Arts.

b. Sub commission on Cultural Heritage (SCH) which includes committees on Archives,

Art Galleries, Historical Research, Libraries and Information Services, Monuments, and
Sites, and Museums.

c. Sub commission on Cultural Dissemination (SCD) which handles committees on

Communication, Cultural Education, and Language and Translation.

d. Sub commission on Cultural Communities and Traditional Arts (SCCTA) which takes
care of the committees on Northern Cultural Communities, Central Cultural Committees,
and the Southern Cultural Committees.

15
NCCA-SCA, with the help of the 19 national committees under it, facilitates most art-related
events and projects in the country. Artist and art groups propose projects which are featured every
February. NCCA then offers grants to deserving artists and art groups. With this, February has
now been known as the National Arts Month (NAM). NCCA never runs out of activities for artists
or arts and culture enthusiasts

Integrative Art Applied to Philippines Contemporary Art

The arts are classified in distinct forms: architecture, visual arts, music, literary arts, dance,
dramatic arts, cinema, and broadcast arts, and the new media. However, the arts in the regions
have evolved and have taken a new form. They are no longer what they were several years ago.

The arts in the regions have combined to create integrative art. Because of this, there is
now an interconnection among the arts, resulting in the combination of arts.

Contemporary art forms in the regions now include the following: choreography, musical
instruments, literary and music composition, visual design, theatrical performance, and cinema.
