Phases of The Moon
Phases of The Moon
Lesson Objective(s):
I can develop a model to show the repeating pattern of the phases of the moon (new, crescent,
quarter, gibbous, and full).
Georgia Standards of Excellence:
Fourth Grade: S4E2. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to model the effects
of the position and motion of the Earth and the moon in relation to the sun as observed
from the Earth.
b. Develop a model based on observations to describe the repeating pattern of the phases of the
moon (new, crescent, quarter, gibbous, and full).
Engagement:
To peak students’ interest, teacher will play a video about phases of the moon to provide insight
of today’s lesson.

Exploration:
As a mini lesson, the teacher will explain the different phases of the moon. The teacher will
provide examples in picture form.
The class will model the different phases of the moon by using Oreo cookies.
Materials: 8 Oreo cookies per student, paper plates, popsicle sticks
Procedures:
1. Slowly separate each Oreo leave much of the icing on one side.
2. Use the popsicle sticks to scrape the icing on each Oreo to visualize the phases of the
moon (New Moon, Waxing Crescent, First Quarter, Waxing Gibbous, Full Moon,
Waning Gibbous, Last/Third Quarter, Waning Crescent)
3. Place the phases of the moon in order in a circle on a paper plate as it orbits the Earth.
Class will discuss how the Oreo cookies represents the phases of the moon.
Explanation:
1. Describe the different phases of the moon.
2. What causes the moon to look like it is changing shape?
3. Explain the relationship between the Sun, Earth, and the Moon.
Elaboration:
The moon fully orbits around Earth about once every month. During its orbit, we can see the
moon in different phases. The phases are controlled by the amount of sunlight reflected off the
moon that we can see from Earth at any point during its orbit.
Evaluation:
Students will complete a written assessment, where they will answer questions related to the
phases of the moon.
