Medical Gases
Introduction
What is a gas system ?
“An MGPS is designed to provide a safe and effective method of delivering the
required medical gas from the source of supply through a pipeline system to the
patient via a terminal unit” - Extract from HTM022-01
Our Primary Objective:
To provide medical gas systems of unparalleled reliability; securing patient
safety whilst maximising efficiency in operation and use.
The four critical elements of Medical Gas System Safety as described in HTM
(Hospital Technical Memorandum)
Continuity – the gas supply must always be available at all times
Adequacy – the correct flow and pressure must always be delivered
Identity – only the correct gas must be administered
Quality – gases must meet defined purity specifications

Quality Management
Quality Management and Certification
o ISO 13485:2003 and ISO 9001:2008 Registered
o Required by manufacturers of Medical Devices in
the European Community (EC)
o Full quality assurance to ISO 13485:2003 enables
CE marking of equipment to the Medical Devices
Directive 93/42/EEC

Noise Considerations
Sound Pressure Levels
o Each increase of 10 dB doubles the apparent
loudness
o Oil-free rotary vane and claw are 60% louder than oil
lubricated rotary vane vacuum pumps
Adding Sound Pressure Levels
o What is the worst case condition?
• You must add the total of all the duty pumps operating at
the same time
• Do not include the standby pumps

Degreased Medical Gas Copper Pipes
Mansfield PFI - UK
On site we have installed 30Km of
copper tube installed on site.
Medical Gas Pipeline Systems
Copper Pipe Jointing
Oxygen-free nitrogen purge must be A dirty joint indicates an
insufficient nitrogen purge
used to ensure no oxidation of the
internal pipe bore
Copper to copper joints are silver
soldered (5% silver)
Capillary action draws molten solder
into the joint
Some joints are cut out after installation A clean joint showing no
oxidation of the inside of the
and cut open for inspection pipe
o Solder should penetrate 3 x wall thickness
or 3mm whichever is greater
o This is checked on 1 in 200 fittings
Medical Gas Pipeline Systems
Pipe and Fittings
Medical gas copper tubes to BS EN 13348:2008
o Material Composition:
• Cu + Ag 99,90 %
• 0,015 P 0,040 %
Pipes degreased to ensure hydrocarbons on surface <20 mg/m2
Fittings degreased to ensure hydrocarbons on surface <100 mg/m2
Solder - maximum cadmium content 0.025% by weight
Copper tube is not to be cleaned on site, it arrives capped and
bagged prior to delivery.
Testing kits ensure quality control throughout the project
