Assignment 1 - 14-09-2021
2. Carbon dioxide gas enters a water cooled compressor at the initial conditions P1 =
1.04 bar and T1 = 10 0C and is discharged at the final conditions P2 = 35.8 bar and
T2 = 93 0C. The entering CO2 flows through a 100 mm diameter pipe with a
velocity of 6 m/s and is discharged through a 25 mm diameter pipe. The shaft work
CO2
supplied to the compressor is 12500 kJ/kmol. What is the heat transfer from the
compressor in kW? Property values are:
H1 = 714 kJ/kg V1 = 0.5774 m3/kg
H2 = 768 kJ/kg V2 = 0.0175 m3/kg
3. A nuclear power plant generates 750 MW, the reactor temperature is 588.15 K and
a river with water temperature of 293.15 K is available.
(a) What is the maximum possible thermal efficiency of the plant and what is the
minimum rate at which the heat must be discarded to the river.
CO2
(b) If the actual thermal of the plant is 60% of the maximum, at what rate must
heat be discarded to the river and what is the temperature rise of the river if it
has a flowrate of 165 m3/s. The density and specific heat of water is 1000 kg/m3
and 4.18 kJ/kg-K.
4. What is the entropy change of the gas, heated in a steady flow process at
approximately atmospheric pressure, when 800 kJ is added to 10 mol of ethylene CO2
initially at 200 0C.
5. An inventor has devised a complicated nonflow process in which 1 mol of air is
CO2
the working fluid. The net effects of the process are claimed to be:
- A change in state of air from 523.15 K and 3 bar to 353.15 K and 1 bar
- A production of 1800 J of work
- The transfer of an undisclosed amount of heat to a heat reservoir at 303.15 K
Determine whether the claimed performance of the process is consistent with the
second law. Assume that air is an ideal gas for which Cp = (7/2)R.
6. 5 kg of liquid carbon tetrachloride undergo a mechanically reversible, isobaric
change of state at 1 bar during which the temperature changes from 273.15 K to
293.15 K. Determine V, W, Q, Ut and Ht. The properties of liquid carbon CO2
tetrachloride at 1 bar and 273.15 K may be assumed independent of temperature:
β = 1.2 × 10-3 K-1, Cp = 0.84 kJ/kg-K and ρ = 1590 kg/m3.
7. It is necessary to store 1 kmol of methane at 300 K and 60 MPa. Determine the
volume of the cylinder that is required for the storage by each of the following:
(a) ideal gas equation
(b) van der Waals equation
(c) Redlich/Kwong equation
CO3
For methane: Tc = 190.7 K, Pc = 46.41bar and parameters assigned for equations
of state are:
Equation of state α(Tr) σ ε Ω Ψ Zc
Van der Waals (vdW) 1 0 0 1/8 27/64 3/8
Redlich/Kwong (RK) −1/2 1 0 0.08664 0.42748 1/3
𝑇𝑟
8. Estimate the following:
(a) the volume occupied by 18 kg of ethylene at 328.15 K and 35 bar. CO3
(b) the mass of ethylene contained in a 0.25 m3 cylinder at 323.15 K and 115 bar.
9. Calculate Z and V for ethylene at 298.15 K and 12 bar by the following equations:
(a) the truncated virial equation, with the following experimental values of virial
coefficients: B = -140 cm3/mol, C = 7200 cm6/mol2.
CO3
(b) the truncated virial equation, with the value of B from generalized Pitzer
correlations.
(c) the Redlich/Kwong equation
10. Determine the expressions for GR, HR and SR implied by the van der Waals
CO3
equation of state.
