PREFACE

Welcome to the course on Tailoring!

This Self-Learning Kit (SLK) is about Tailoring and consists of learning competencies that
a learner must achieve that will enable him/her to draft and cut a pattern for a men’s polo.
This SLK is designed to equip the TVL learners with essential knowledge, skills and attitude on
tailoring in accordance with the learning standard that will lead the learners to achieve the
goal and objectives of the lesson.

This Self-Learning Kit serves as guide of the learners to produce a quality output.
Furthermore, this SLK serves as motivation to the learners in drafting and cutting a pattern
for a men’s polo. It is made up of the following components and procedures in taking
client’s body measurements.

This Self-Learning Kit is designed so you can pace yourself as you use it
to achieve the prescribed learning competencies. It also aims to prepare you to be
competitive to the fast growing world of industry, for higher education mid-
dle skills development, employment and entrepreneurship. Lastly, there are
three general reminders 1) Do not fold the pages of the Self-Learning Kit; 2)
use separate sheet for your answers; and 3) hold the self-learning kit properly.

Take Client’s Body Measurement:
Here are the measurement needed in drafting a polo shirt

1. Shoulder – taken from one end


of shoulder bone (left) across
the back to the other end of
shoulder bone.

2. Breast or chest – taken around the


body with the tape
measure passing over
the fullest part of the
shoulder blade at the
back and over to the
apex.

3. Waist – taken around the smallest


part of the waistline. Insert two
fingers under the tape measure for
ease or allowance.

4. Hips – taken around the fullest part of


hip (buttocks) with two fingers
inserted under the tape measure.

5. Shirt length – taken from the nape down


to the center back to the
desired length.

6. Armhole- measure the circumference


of the arm from the shoulder
bone down to the armpit then
back to the shoulder bone.

7. Sleeve length – taken from the shoulder


tip point down to the
desired sleeve length.

8. Arm girth – measure around the


circumference where sleeve
lengths ends.

Tools needed in taking measurements:


1. Tape Measure – Flexible measuring used in taking body measurements.

2. L Square – Used to transfer measurements to the draft pattern.

3. Measuring Gauge – Small ruler with a sliding guide and is about 6 inches long.

4. Hip Curve – used in for smoothing and correcting pattern lines.

Have you tried measuring a client? What are the tools needed in taking boy
measurement? What are the proper procedures in taking body measurements?What
are the pointers needed in taking body measurement for men's apparel.

Tailoring course is designed for Grade 11 and Grade 12 students to develop


knowledge, skills, and attitude to perform tasks in drafting and cutting a men’s polo
which covers the competency of taking the client's body measurement. This Self
Learning Kit contains activities that will activate prior knowledge of the learner and
which is essential to the development of their understanding in Tailoring.

C O N T E NT DE VE LO P E RS
WRITER: ALMA VILLA G. ARELLANO A graduate of Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State
University with a degree of Bachelor of science in Industrial Education. Major in Garments
Trades Technology. Currently teaching Dressmaking/Tailoring in MNHS-Camaya and
also finished/passed Trainor’s Methodology I, NTTC and a holder of National Certificate
II in Dressmaking/Tailoring.

LAYOUT ARTIST: ANNIE RHOSE C. ROSALES A graduate of Bachelor of Science in Business


Administration (BSBA) from Bataan Peninsula State University. Upon passing Licensure
Examination for Teachers, she decided to teach Information and Communication
Technology (ICT) using her trainings and experience from her previous work. She
passed her Training Methodology I and currently working as Teacher II in Mariveles
National High School Camaya Campus.

EVALUATOR: MARY ANN S. VALDEZ She is a graduate of Bachelor of Secondary


Education major in Mathematics at Bataan Polytechnic State College, year 2002. She
earned her units in Master of Arts in Education major in Mathematics at Bataan Peninsula
State University - Main Campus and is currently taking up Master of Arts in Education
major in Educational Management at Gordon College – Institute of Graduate Studies
in Olongapo City. She is presently a teacher at Nagbalayong National High School
and is a Learning Resource Evaluator for LRMDS-Bataan.

at the Philippine Normal University in 2001. Served as a teacher at Bataan Peninsula
State University, Limay National High School and Bonifacio Camacho National High
School from 1992 to 2004. Became a Department Head of Technology & Livelihood
Education (TLE) at Hermosa National High School from 2004 to 2007 and was given the
