Assessment Task 1: Written Questions

Information for students

Knowledge questions are designed to help you demonstrate the knowledge which you
have acquired during the learning phase of this unit. Ensure that you:
review the advice to students regarding answering knowledge questions in the
Hospitality Works Student User Guide
comply with the due date for assessment which your assessor will provide.
adhere with your RTO’s submission guidelines.
answer all questions completely and correctly.
submit work, which is original and, where necessary, properly referenced.
submit a completed cover sheet with your work.
avoid sharing your answers with other students.

Question 1
Identify three communication techniques that are effective in a workplace coaching context. Describe
how each technique can assist you to be a good coach.
ANS: The three communicational techniques are:
1: Coaching Communication Means Active Listening – It is a skill that can be acquired,
developed, and improved with practice. It is a “must have” for coaches! Active listening
involves listening with all senses. It involves hearing the words, the tone of those words, the
context of those words, and how the speaker is communicating with their body language while
saying those words. It not only requires a focus on the speaker, it also requires the listener to
show active signs, both verbal and non-verbal, of listening. Active listening is also about
patience – effective coaching conversations develop over time.
2: Using silence effectively. Just as it is important to ask questions and provide feedback, it is
also important to use silence within a conversation. Using silence means that you give the
client time to think through a reply, and that you are not anticipating a client’s response by
pre-empting their answer.
3: Action initiation. Once goals are set, action is needed to get to those goals. A coach can
help initiate action by challenging beliefs, exploring options, asking clients to share ideas,
encouraging clients to identify new behaviours or modes of thinking, and offering additional
ideas (but not telling them what to do!).

QUESTION 2
Explain why feedback from colleagues about a potential coachee’s performance or work skills is
important when deciding whether coaching is required.
ANS: 1. As the colleagues are working with you, they can understand the areas where the new staff
needs help and have struggled while working through the shifts.

2. Since the colleagues have expertise in the area where they are observing you work; they can be
better judge of your weaknesses and the gaps in your skills and knowledge.

QUESTION 3
Explain why your own direct observation and own workplace experience can assist in determining
whether coaching is required.
ANS: The direct observation and the workplace experience can help identifying the areas of struggle
of the new colleagues, and the mistakes they make while following the procedures they are required
to go through can help in identifying the gaps in the understanding and the knowledge. I can
benchmark my own performance and experience to gauge the short comings of the new staff. Hence,
my own experience will help me determine the key areas of gaps while working with the new staff.

QUESTION 4

EXPLAIN THE WAYS IN WHICH A POTENTIAL COACHEE MAY IDENTIFY THAT THEY HAVE A NEED FOR
COACHING.

ANS: The potential coachee is aware of areas in which they are lacking or not confident and

In this activity you will learn about each of your colleagues (referred to as
coachees). You will meet with your assessor (who will play the role of your
supervisor) and you will need to gather information about each person so you can
determine their need for coaching.

James works as an Executive chef in a busy Italian restaurant. He has just employed four new
staff members, Amy, Samantha Ricky, and Oliver, to assist in both front and back of house
during their busiest service periods. He has asked his Sous Chef George, to observe their
work during their first week on the job and identify if there is a need for coaching.

Write an email to James, regarding your observation, suggest the pieces of training that the
new staff would need to work more efficiently, to stay in line with compliance requirements and
cover the skills gap in WHS, Hygiene, operational skills and documents and record-keeping
areas.

Email 1:

Subject: performance observation and coaching requirement for new staff.

Hi James,

As per our discussion, I have observed the new staff Amy, Samantha, Ricky, and Oliver. In the
past one week and based on how they have performed through the shifts. I have identified
several skills and knowledge gaps in their performance. Therefore, I am suggesting the following
trainings to be conducted for them to help them work more efficiently in the kitchen and the
backend areas. These training will not just meet the compliance requirements of the company’s

policies and procedures but also cover the skill gap. So, the training is basic first aid, how to
apply band aid on small cuts and wounds, how to use equipment safety, how to record food
wastage, how to sharpen a knife.

Therefore, I would like to check their roster for coming weeks and organize a training session for
all session. I would like to accommodate all four of them and deliver the training or conduct
training for them, please let me know if there is anything additional that you would like to add into
the training, or I am ok to go ahead with the same. Therefore, I have organized the four coaching
sessions for four-hour coaching sessions for four hours on the coming Thursday. As they are all
roster for half a day start and as their own roasted for 4:00 pm to 9:00pm shift. I have added an
additional 4 hour to their shift. So, that they can come in early get trained and get the coaching

provide you with my feedback for each of the staff the trainees.

Your sincerely,

George

3. Meet with each coachee.

Make a time to meet with each coachee prior to the coaching time provided by your
assessor. You must hold one meeting per coachee, as each person will have
different needs.
During this meeting you will need to talk to the coachee about their needs so you
can determine exactly what you will coach them in.
You will need to demonstrate effective communication skills during this meeting,
including using active listening and questioning techniques, so that you are clear on
what your coaching needs to provide.

4. Organise coaching sessions.

For this activity you need to look at the information you gathered during your
meeting with each coachee and take notes about:

 what they need to be coached in

 what you need for this coaching

 how long you think this coaching will take (make realistic calculations,
assuming you will be doing the coaching during a work day while other
activities are being performed around you, and consider how long you would
expect each coachee to need to practise skills)

 any information you can provide to support the coaching (including any
workplace procedures or documentation).
Save your notes file as Coaching Preparation. Include your notes for all four
coaching sessions in this document.
Once you have determined what you need, draft an email to each coachee to
provide them with some basic information about your session, including:

 when it will be held (time and location) and for how long it will run

 anything they need to bring (if relevant)

 a basic outline of the coaching session (what will happen, it’s purpose etc).

End the email with a farewell that shows you are looking forward to your session.
You do not need to send the emails but do need to keep a copy of each, as you will
submit them at the end of this assessment.

Coaching Session 4

Trainee’s Name: Oliver

Session outline. (Name and How to sharpen the knife

explanation of the task)
There are many methods to sharpen your knives. For

SITXHRM001 Coach Others in Job Skills

Student ID:ANIE200132

example, you can use a sharpening stone, or a

sharpening rod, sharpening system, or an electrical
sharpening machine. You can also ask someone else to
do the job. The best sharpening method for you, depends
on the kind of knives you want to sharpen, the type of
steel of the blade, your experience with sharpening and
your own preferences.

Demonstration of the task (step by Step 1: Honing

step demonstration)
Honing helps keep a knife blade's existing edge
straight and sharp. You will need a knife and a
honing steel. Position them comfortably. Touch the
heel of your knife to the top of the steel at a 22-
degree angle and apply a little bit of pressure.

Step 2: Slide the Knife Down the Honing Steel

Slide the knife down the steel with a left to right

motion. The idea is to touch the entire edge of the
blade in every pass. Repeat on the other side, about
four or five passes. Tip: Hone each side the same
number of times.

Step 3: Test the Knife

You'll know you are done if your sharp knife cuts

more easily than before.

Step 4: Sharpening

Sharpening puts a brand-new edge on your knife

when it gets dull. Sharpen depending on how much
you cook. You will know it's time to sharpen when
your knife gets so dull that honing doesn't help.
Manual sharpeners are safe and easy to use.

Step 5: Using a Sharpener

Place the sharpener on a flat surface and put the

knife into the course slot. Pull the knife toward you
with even pressure from heel to tip. Repeat this a
few times.

Step 6: Repeat

SITXHRM001 Coach Others in Job Skills
SITXHRM001 Coach Others in Job Skills
Full Name:Mandeep singh
Student ID:ANIE200132

Next, repeat using the fine slot. Wipe your knife

clean and try to cut something. You will know when
it's sharp. Tip: Always sharpen your knife with the
same tool.

Remember, hone for day-to-day use and sharpen for

long-term care. Avoid dishwashers and glass cutting
boards, as they will dull your knife. Take care of your
knives and they will take care of you.

Ask questions to check the At what degree should we keep for knife sharpening?
understanding.
We should keep at 22 degrees.

Allow time for practice. (observe I will give to hard copy regarding the session so that you
while the trainee is practicing) understand more clearly. And will help you in further
understanding. I will observe you during your shift.

Positive and constructive feedback. Yes, Oliver has understood everything regarding the
session, and I observed her she has understood quite

there is some drawbacks and feedback could be given
instant and she will be capable of doing better.

Subject: overview of training feedback

Dear

I am writing to informing you to give you a brief overview of training sessions that were
conducted. The feedback about the trainees from the staff that they are working with
and trainees’ feedback. All the training was conducted on 01-06-2021 at 10am to 4 pm.

The trainees were provided with enough opportunity to practice the tasks that they were
trained. As per all the four trainees’ feedback they were very happy with the way the
session was conducted. The trainees were asked questions to check their
understanding on the procedures they need to follow. They were more confident about
getting the job done properly now. The demonstrations were easy to follow, and they
practiced the task multiple times.so, they all were given a lot of time to practise and
clear the mistakes. They were nervous about the coaching in the beginning. But they
understood and they even worked out that it was probably on the reason why needed
some coaching.

Now it’s been two weeks since the coaching has been done. I feel like I have gathered
some feedback from the staff that these people are working with staff feedback is as
following regarding the new trainees. And Amy was very happy in her role, Samantha
has been working more efficiently, Ricky has improved his mistakes and Oliver was
nervous before but now more confident in his work. The oral outcome of their coaching
session is very successful. However, just letting you know that the coaches will be
having the trainees have been poised up with the staff who will be constantly mentoring
them an assisting them in improving further in their skills and ensuring that all their
needs are met, and they are not finding the situation is very challenging to cope with.
There will be another observation before they appraisal to make sure that they are being
very proficient with the task that have been ghosted with or these are any additional
coaching to be provided to all the four staff.

George.
