When Spain started to colonized the Philippine archipelago, most Filipinos suffered the
torture of worshiping the Spanish Regime. Commoners were called indios which is associated to
poor peasant Filipinos. For them to be cultured according to Rizal, they must defend their
country by educating themselves and gaining knowledge on how to provide a better life for
everyone thus they are called Filipinos. This cultural renaissance which happened provided an
awareness on liberating the land not though war, but through their brains in a form of artistic
works such as literature and painting. Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo were not just
novels about Ibarra and Simoun but it symbolizes the social environment of the Filipinojsa at
that time. Most works are all religious, conservative and folksy.
After 333 years of living in the convent, Filipinos went partying in Hollywood for 33
years under the American occupation. The idea of creating a system in the Philippines, by

having its own government and educational institutions resulting to the unique identity of the
country carefully guided by the Americans. Though some forms of the arts like literature,
architecture, etc. are all westernized some Filipino scholars who were able to study abroad
brought and cultivated the fusion of western and Filipino design in most art forms. Although
America covers the intellectual way of thinking, Filipinos are still triumphant in creating their
own salient features. Works become liberating and modern.
The end of the World War II is an event characterized by change in many parts of the
globe. The region that has been devastated and worstly hit by the global war was the Asian
region. In SEA (Southeast Asia), history depicted it as the worst armed struggle against war and
humanity and most destructive of humankind in terms of human and material resources.
At the end of Japanese occupation in the region, returning European and Southeast
Asian nation themselves complained that Japanese Fascism had deeply influenced the region’s
societies.
All the countries of SEA both insular and peninsular struggled hard for independence as
a result of which, during the interim the real power of society pass into the hands of SEA
leaders some of whom declared independence and attempted with varying degrees of success
to establish government structures. Firearms in large number were controlled by SEA. Such was
the groundwork for the establishment of new, independent states.
In Indonesia armed struggle was a domineering factor to defeat the western power and
secure independence peacefully. Malaysia and Philippines suffered “emergencies” (armed
insurgencies”. This was followed by decolonization and none expressed a desire to return to
pre-colonial forms of government. The new leadership of SEA looked forward to a new world
not an old one, however, these countries leadership had little consensus on how to solve this
new world that resulted to political and intellectual conflict, like an outpouring of new ideas
and creativity particularly in literature. This signaled the beginning of a kind of cultural
renaissance, the significance of which is still insufficiently understood.
The decades of the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s ushered the rise of nationalism and independent
states which even in religious and ethnic challenges to the states failed. Communism and
western parliamentary democracy were rejected, and Indonesia, the largest and more powerful
nation in SEA provided the most spectacular example of such developments resulting to loss of
lives because of differences in ideology.
Philippines began in the mid 60’s and can be characterized as; The rise of the military as
a force in government is observed in Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, Burma and Vietnam.
These military forces viewed themselves as the potential saviors of national unity and also as

disciplined, effective champions of modernization with support from the populace; During this
period renewed attention was given by SEA to the question of unifying values and ideology.
This in a nutshell was SEA in the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s that brought about change, namely,
cultural and intellectual revolution since culture and the arts were used as the instruments of
awakening the people of SEA of what changes had brought them about. However, this change
also saw the appearance of society’s problem and crises forcing people to look for remedy to
outline depression, stress, fear, anxiety and a socio-economic outlook that will pull them down
in the future.
Imelda Marcos being the first lady has once asked her husband “I’m the wife of the
President, what should I do?” then Marcos replied “I’m the President and I will build a house for
my family, you’re my wife so make the house beautiful!” And that has been the general idea od
Imelda Marcos in creating a line in “The Good and the Beautiful” she started building cultural
edifices such as the Cultural Center of the Philippines as the counterpart of Lincoln Art Center in
the U.S Award giving bodies were also formed to provide laurels and accolades to Filipinos who
excel in their artistic skills, such as the Palanca Memorial Awards, NCCA ( National Commission
for Culture and Arts) National Artist Awards. The government also funded the art education
and art exhibits that features brilliant Filipino works for the fellowmen and for the World, this
included the terno and barong as the national costume, the hosting of film festival and
pageants. Though a significant art awakening is happening in the country, another problem
occurs. In the Philippines, society was marked as the rising gap between the rich and the
marginalized poor. The neo-colonial master who are of the same blood and race created a
generation of uncertainty, dissatisfaction, disorientation, diversified beliefs and practices, the
demand of a healthy and sustainable life. This condition saw the rise of women empowerment,
use of force to fight the evil, diminished men folks brought about by the recent war, low regard
for the elderly, problem of peace and order brought about by poverty, and disrespect for
human rights. The state seemed not to see this sad state of populace and pretended to look on
the other side of the spectrum. Such social disparity of life gave way to a more vivid expression
of how creative arts through the writing of novels, comics, other forms of literary works, the
revolution expressed through drama and the arts and dances. Artists reflected their feelings
and interpretation of what kind of society they have which eventually gave rise to the birth of
contemporary arts.
In today’s predicament Filipinos are all aware on the benefits of the art, though social
economic status matters. The elite can afford to buy expensive artworks and attend different
exhibits, the middle class are all patrons of both local and foreign movies and even music. Most
students have the wide readership of popular material like magazines and books. The modern
art works may be simple or sometimes out of this world, but as long as it will have an audience
and artists, the art in the Philippines will exist.

Arts.
