SPM Chemistry Set 9 Paper 3: Answer All Questions The Time Suggested To Complete Question 1 and Question 2 Is 45 Minutes

The mass of lead(II) carbonate decomposed = 2.67 g Relative molecular mass of lead(II) carbonate = 267 Number of moles of lead(II) carbonate = Mass / Relative molecular mass = 2.67 g / 267 = 0.01 mol Since 1 mol of lead(II) carbonate decomposes to produce 1 mol of carbon dioxide gas, Number of moles of carbon dioxide gas released = Number of moles of lead(II) carbonate = 0.01 mol Therefore, the number of moles of gas released is 0.01 mol. 2(e) [3 marks] Total marks for question 2 =

1 An experiment is carried out to study the rate of reaction. A 250 cm 3 conical flask
contained 45 cm3 of sodium thiosulphate solution, Na2S2O3 0.2 mol dm-3 is placed
on a white paper marked with the ‘X’ sign as shown in the figure below.

Sodium thiosulphate
+ sulphuric acid

White paper

“X” sign

5 cm3 sulphuric acid of l.0 mol dm-3 was added to the sodium thiosulphate solution and the
mixture swirled. At the same time the stopwatch was started. The time is taken
as soon as the ‘X’ sign is no longer visible.

The experiment is repeated using the different concentration of sodium thiosulphate.

The table below shows the results of experiment with the different concentration of sodium
thiosulphate solution.

Experiment Concentration of sodium Time(s) 1/time

1 0.04 55
2 0.08 48
3 012 42
4 0.16 37
