Curriculum Development Module 1 Lesson 1

This document discusses curriculum development and contains two activities. The first activity asks about traditional vs progressive perspectives on curriculum. Pia is identified as progressive because she believes curriculum involves learning from students' experiences. Catriona is traditional because she believes curriculum is absorbing teacher information. The second activity asks if Pia's ideas are more realistic than Catriona's, elaborating that Pia's student-centered approach reflects 21st century learning. The third activity asks if Catriona's point has value, noting some students just absorb for grades, not experiences. The analysis asks if teachers need to understand curriculum and how preparing includes knowing curriculum, being open-minded, and being a guide rather than authority.

CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT

MODULE 1 LESSON 1

ACTIVITY

1. Who is to be considered as traditional and who’s progressive? Why?

Pia is considered as a progressivist because she defines curriculum with the

definition of progressive perspective as she believed that schooling is learning out from
what the students had known, will learn, and how they assimilate the lessons to real-life
situations which means that she believes that school is a part of life. On the other hand,
Catriona is considered as having a traditional perspective about the curriculum as she
stated that going to school is only absorbing the information given by the teacher in lectures
and then your grades which means that she believes that school is just the preparation for
life.

2. Do you think the ideas of Pia were realistic than that of Catriona’s? Please elaborate.

I think that the ideas of Pia were realistic than that of Catriona because her idea
speaks the present teaching way were learning right now in the 21 st century focuses on
student- centered where learners are not just acquiring learnings with the help of written
documents but with the experiences as well which means students are learning by doing.

3. Do you also think that Catriona’s point is valuable in real life situations? Please
elaborate.

I think that Catriona`s point is valuable too in real life situations because there are
students that only applies traditional way with their learning where they are just absorbing
the teaching of their teachers and then complied all the requirements needed just to have a
final grade without experiencing the learning process by themselves which is called the
teacher-centered learning.
ANALYSIS

1. Is it necessary for teachers to learn about school curriculum? Why?

Yes, it is necessary for teacher to learn about school curriculum because school
curriculum informs teachers on the skills that must be taught at each grade level in order to
prepare students for higher education or work. Understanding the larger picture assists
teachers in aligning their individual curriculum's learning objectives with the school's
curriculum.

2. How do you prepare yourself to become a teacher?

I prepare myself to become a teacher by acquiring the knowledge of what and how
the curriculum works. Molding myself to be open-minded and always equipped the idea that
learning is a lifelong journey which means that I have a great deal to learn from my
students. I am also constructing the idea that I should always aim for humility rather than
authority, setting myself as a guide in guiding my students on their journey and always
working on acquiring a sense of humor to create an engaging learning process.
