Energy & Environment Assignment I

This document contains 11 questions related to determining calorific values of fuels using bomb calorimetry and Boy's calorimetry experiments. It asks students to calculate gross calorific value (GCV) and net calorific value (NCV) of a gas using data from a Boy's calorimeter experiment. It also asks students to calculate GCV and NCV of a solid fuel sample using data from a bomb calorimeter experiment and the Dulong formula. Finally, it asks students to discuss the significance of proximate and ultimate analysis of coal and compare different types of fuels.

B. E. First Semester (2021)

Topic : Basics of Energy & Solid Fuel Subject: Energy & Environment
Name of Teacher: Dr. G. Wankhade Section : B & C
Assignment : I Date Of Submission : 7th March 21
1. The following data were obtained in a Boy’s calorimeter experiment :
Volume of gas used = 0.50 m3 at NTP
Weight of water heated = 125 kg
Temperature of inlet water = 22.50 C
Temperature of outlet water = 42.50 C
Weight of steam condensed = 0.129 kg
Calculate G.C.V and N.C.V per m3 at S.T.P. provided that heat liberated in
condensing water vapour an cooling the condensate as 587 kcal/kg.

2. Discuss the following

(i) Define and explain Significance of Ultimate analysis of coal.
(ii) Advantages of non-conventional energy.
(iii) Important applications of solar energy.

3. What is Calorific value? Differentiate between GCV& NCV?

4. During determination of calorific value of a coal sample by Bomb’s calorimeter following
results were recorded :
Weight of fuel burnt = 1.90 gm
Water equivalent of calorimeter = 500gm
Weight of water taken in calorimeter = 2300 gm
Initial temperature of water = 25.050C
Final temperature of water = 29.230C
Acid correction = 15 cal.
Fuse wire correction = 7 cal.
Thread correction = 5 cal
Cooling correction =0.260C.
If the fuel contains 7.5% Hydrogen, calculate the gross and net calorific value
of the coal sample provided that the latent heat of steam condensed is 587cal/gm.
5. Write Dulong Formula to determine Theoretical calorific value of solid fuel using
Ultimate Analysis Data.
6. Write short notes on
i) Significance of Proximate analysis of coal
ii) Define GCV and NCV with its relationship.

7. Explain how calorific value of a gaseous fuel is determined by using Boy’s calorimeter.
8. Explain how calorific value of a solid fuel is determined by using Bomb calorimeter.
9. Calculate GCV and NCV of coal using Dulong Formula. Ultimate Analysis data of coal is
given as % C = 82, % H = 6, % S = 1, % N2 = 2, %Ash = 6 and Latent heat of Steam =
587cal/g.
10. What are the characteristics of good fuel.
11. Compare between Solid fuel, Liquid fuel and Gaseous fuel?
