Lab 4

This document provides objectives and instructions for an experiment on parallel commutated inverters. The experiment involves: 1) Checking a control module that provides firing pulses to thyristors. 2) Testing a parallel commutated switch circuit and observing the load voltage and capacitor voltage waveforms. 3) Increasing and decreasing the frequency in the switch circuit to observe the effects. 4) Connecting a Jones chopper circuit and observing various voltage waveforms. 5) Connecting a parallel commutated inverter circuit and observing the current and voltage waveforms to evaluate proper functioning of the inverter.

POWER ELECTRONICS - EE4PK4

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering

McMaster University, Hamilton, Canada
INV.1(8 pages) PARALLEL COMMUTATED INVERTERS - fall 2004

GROUP: ______ NAMES: ________________ ________________ ________________

Objectives:
-to familiarize students with SCR firing
-to illustrate the parallel capacitor commutated switch
-to check some chopper characteristics
-to check a simple inverter circuit

Preparation:
- as given in class, you are expected to prepare and study the switch and choppers in this experi-
ment. You should have the basic circuit diagram prepared before the lab.

EXPERIMENT:

1. Check Control Module

Plug-in your “pulse controller” module that is run by the computer.(run program PWMLAB3.exe.
Monitor on the scope the control pulses Q1 and Q2 and familiarize yourself with the controls.

Connect Q1 and Q2 to the appropriate SCR gate circuits as appropriate.

2. parallel commutated switch

Connect the parallel commutated switch of figure 4-1. Set the loads at 3A each after firing one shot
(by hand). Set the capacitor at 25uF (do not use higher values). Adjust the gate firing to give you a
symmetrical pattern of 60 to 100 Hz.

Figure 4-1

Monitor the load voltage and the voltage across the capacitor. Draw the
above quantities on scale, below.
INV.1 Page 3

Explain the process of commutation:

3. Decrease the capacitor value.

Comment on the voltage waveshape (improvement on duty cycle)?

INV.1 Page 4
4. With C = 25 uF

Increase the frequency of the firing (to around 400Hz). Show the degradation of the load voltage
signal.

5. With C = 1 uF,
Increase the frequency to maximum. Increase the load until misfiring occurs (MAKE SURE THAT
YOU HAVE YOUR HAND ON THE SWITCH TO TURN POWER OFF WHEN MISFIRING
OCCURS). Come back a little and conclude to the turn-off time of the SCR.

6. The Jones Chopper:
Connect the circuit of figure 4-2.

Figure 4-2

Set the load at 2A (frequency 100Hz and 60% duty cycle) . Monitor the load voltage, the capacitor
voltage, the voltage across the main SCR. Draw the curves on the scale below.
INV.1 Page 6
Vary the duty cycle of the chopper and graph the output voltage versus the duty cycle (use 100 Hz
frequency).

7. parallel commutated inverter

Connect the parallel commutated inverter circuit
of figure 4-3.
INV.1 Page 7
Figure 4-3
Fire manually each side of the inverter, and set the resistances (R) in order to deliver 2 to 3A source
current (!!! safety factor !!!).

With a capacitor value of 15uF and frequency around 20Hz and 50% duty cycle, monitor the voltages
across the resistance (r) which give a measure of the primary current , the voltage across the capaci-
tor, and the voltage in the load. Draw on scale.
Comment on the waveforms and discuss the proper functioning of the inverter.
INV.1 Page 8

What settings will deliver a “good sine-wave” at the Load? How does the loading affect this set-
ting?
