Grade 12 Biology (SBI 4U1) Name: Unit: Population Dynamics Assignment: Species at Risk Date

This document provides instructions for an assignment where students must research an endangered species on the IUCN Red List and create an educational brochure, infographic, or video on the species' key characteristics, population trends, threats, and conservation efforts. The assignment requires research on the species' physical traits, habitat, population size and growth patterns, interactions with other species, impacts of human activity, and current/proposed conservation programs. Students will be evaluated based on accurately conveying this information through clear visuals and references to scientific sources.

Grade 12 Biology (SBI 4U1) Name:

Unit: Population Dynamics

Assignment: Species at Risk Date:

You are a conservation biologist who is an expert on a threatened species that appears on the IUCN Red List (found at
http://www.iucnredlist.org/). Your task is to create a brochure, infographic, or infomercial on your particular species to
educate the public on why we should work to save it. You will need to focus on the key characteristics and threats to
the species in order to provide a well-rounded, yet brief, picture of the species.

Assignment Format
You may create a video, infographic, webpage, brochure or other visual communication tool. Each student (or group of
two students) must choose a unique species, no duplication.

Research Checklist
1. Characteristics of the Population
 Brief description of the species physical characteristics, behaviour and habitat (include pictures).
 Primary population characteristics (e.g. distribution, density, dispersion).
 Population range (include a map), and migration patterns (if applicable).
 Age structure & genetic diversity. (i.e. is the population aging, losing genetic diversity.)
2. Population Growth
 Historical data on the estimated population size. (i.e. when was it abundant, starting to decline?)
 What is the species’ current population? Is this species being actively researched to measure population trends?
 Predict the likelihood of the species going extinct in the near future.
 Possible limiting factors that have contributed to the species’ “at risk” status.
3. Species Interactions
 Identify other species with which your species interacts.
 Describe these interactions with other species (predator/prey, competition).
 Does competition or predation influence the population size and growth?
 Is food scarcity a serious problem?
4. Human Influence
 How have local and global human populations influenced the “at risk” status of the species?
 Consider the possible role of habitat destruction or encroachment; water, air & soil pollution; commercial
harvesting; hunting; climate change; agricultural and industrial practices.
5. Conservation Biology
 Describe any programmes underway to protect or enhance the viability of the species.
 Propose an action plan to offer protection for the species. (i.e. What actions could and should be taken to
ensure the long term viability of the species?)
 Why is it important to save this species from a biological viewpoint?

This research is for background information on your species and will help you to determine what information would be
best to include in your assignment. Not all of the above research criteria are applicable to all species.
Evaluation
 The following information is clear, accurate and detailed:
o Physical appearance of the species.
o Preferred habitat and range.
o Major food sources, and predator/prey interactions.
o Characteristics of past and current population numbers.
o Major threats to continued survival.
o Impacts of human activities on species survival.
o Current conservation efforts.
o Possible future conservation efforts.
 Audio and/or Visuals are clear and effective (colour, font, style and format are used to communicate information
clearly and effectively; written work is free from grammatical errors)
 At least three clear images of the species and its habitat are used. Images must be referenced.
 An image of a map showing the territory or range of the species is used. Images must be referenced.
 A minimum of 5 reputable and scientifically accurate sources are cited. References are provided in a separate
document and listed in APA format.
