I. Choose the correct option:

Q.1 A bus travels 54 kilometer in 90 minutes. The speed of the bus is
a) 0.6 m/s b) 10 m/s c) 5.4 m/s d) 3.6 m/s
Ans: b) 10 m/s
Q.2 If we denote speed by 5, distance by D and time by T, then the relationship
between these quantities is:
a) S = D x T b) T = S x D c) S = 1/T x D d) S = D/T
Ans: d) S = D / T
Q.3 The correct unit representing the speed of an object is:
a) S m/s b) S m/d c) S s/m d) S m x s
Ans. a) S m/s
Q.4 Raghav walks to his school, which is at a distance of 3 km from his home in
30 minutes. On reaching school he finds that the school is closed and comes
back by a bicycle with his friend. He reaches home in 20 minutes. His average
speed in km/hr is:
a) 8.3 b) 7.2 c) 5 d) 3.6
Ans.4 b) 7.2

Q.5 The speedometer of a vehicle measures the speed in:

a) m/s b) m/min c) km/hr d) m/hr
Ans. c) km/hr

II. Solve the following questions:

Q.6 The average age of children of class 7 is 12 years and 3 month. Express this
age in seconds.
Ans. Solution: 12 years 3 months = 12 x days of the year + 3 x days in a month =
12 x 365 + 3 x 30 = 4470 days = 4470 x hours x mins x second (in a day)
= 4470 x 24 x 60 x 60 = 386208000 S

Q.7 A spaceship travels 36000 km in one hour. Express its speed in m/s.
Ans: Solution: Given distance = 36000 km = 36000 x 1000 = 36000000 m Time
= 1 hour = 60 mins = 3600 S Speed = Distance ÷ time = 3600 36000000 = 10,000
m/s
Q.8 Convert 54 km/hr into m/s.
Ans: Solution: To convert km/hr into m/s we multiply by 5/18.
We multiply by 5/18 = 54 x 18 5 = 15 m/s

Q.9 Calculate time period of a simple pendulum, if it takes 72 seconds to

complete 24 oscillations?
Ans: Solution : Time period (T) = Time taken to complete one oscillation
Time taken= 72sec. no of oscillations =24
Time Period = 3 secs

Q.10 A train is travelling at a speed of 100 km/hr. How long will it take to
complete a journey of 250000 m?
Ans: Solution: Distance covered = 250000 m = 250000/ 1000 = 250 km
Time = distance / speed = 250 / 100 = 2.5 hrs.

Q.11 A truck travels a distance of 540 km in 4.5 hrs. Calculate its speed?
Ans: Solution : Distance travelled by truck = 540 km Time taken = 4.5 hrs Speed
Speed = Distance / time = 540 km / 4.5 hrs = 120 km/hrs.

Q.12 The distance between the two stations is 1995 kilometers. How much
time a vehicle will take to cover this distance at an average speed of 19 km/hr?
Ans: Solution: Given distance between two stations = 1995 km.
Speed = 19 km/ hr
Time = Distance/speed = 1995/19 = 105 hrs
Q.13 A car takes 15 minutes to cover a distance of 15 kilometers. Calculate its
speed?
Ans: Solution : Time taken by car = 15 x 60 = 900s. Distance = 15 x 1000 =
15000m. Speed = Distance/time = 15000/ 900 = 16.6 m/s
To convert m/s into km/hr we multiply by 18/5 = 16.6 * 18/5 = 59.75 km/ hr
Question will be discussed in the class
Q.14 Plot the distance – time graph from the following data, also find the speed using graph.
Calculate the distance travelled in 4.5 seconds.
Time (s) 0 1 2 3 4 5
Distance(m) 0 10 20 30 40 50

Q.15 Complete the data of the table given below with the help of the distance-time graph
given in figure.
Distance (m) 0 4 ? 12 ? 20
Time (s) 0 2 4 ? 8 10

Ans: Distance (m) 0 4 8 12 16 20

Time (s) 0 2 4 6 8 10
