Area, Volume, Mass and Density Activity Sheet

1. State the instrument(s) you would use the measure the following items:
a. The thickness of a human hair
b. The diameter of a table tennis ball
c. The area of a window pane
d. The inside diameter or a piece of water pipe
e. The diameter of a bolt, when deciding the size of hole to drill for
f. The volume of liquid in a juice bottle
g. The volume of a glass stopper

2. Find the area of a rectangle whose length and breadth are 12.5 cm and 4.75 cm
respectively.

3. Kaylee and Rory have a circular swimming pool. The pool has a cover that fits snuggly
over the top of it. If the radius of the pool is 12 m, what is the surface area of the
cover? Use 3.14 for pi

4. Estimate the area of the circle using square grid method (counting the squares). Each
horizontal and vertical line on the grid is 1cm apart.

5. Each square is 1m in length and breadth, estimate the area of the pond below.
6. Convert between the following units:
a) 6000 mm2 = _______________ cm2
b) 2.3 cm2 = _______________ m2
c) 0.007 m2 = ________________ cm2
d) 450 000 m2 = ________________ km2

7. Convert between the following units:

a.) 0.7 m³ = _________________ cm³
b.) 4000000 cm³ = ________________ m³
c.) 10.2 mm³= __________________ cm³
d.) 9.55 m3 = _________________ mm3

8. A pile of 500 sheets of paper has a mass of 2.0 kg. The pile is 300 mm long, 200 mm
wide and 50 mm thick. Calculate:
a. the thickness of one sheet
b. the mass of one sheet
c. the volume of the pile
d. the density of the paper

9. Calculate:
a. The density of a substance of volume 3 m3 and mass 18 kg
b. The mass of a solid of density 14 g/cm3 and volume 7 cm3
c. The volume of a liquid of density 2 g/cm3 and a mass 72 g.

10. How many kilograms of air must there be in a room 5 m long, 4 m wide and 3 m high?
Note – The density of air is 1.3 kg/m3.
11. The density of a metal is found by the displacement can method. Using a balance,
the mass of the metal is found to be 170 g. The metal was lowered into the can, and
the volume of water which was spilled over into the measuring cylinder was read to be
25 mL. A check of the measurement was taken and this time the reading was 21 mL.
1 mL = 1 cm 3
a. Use this information to find the most likely value of the volume of the piece of
metal in cm3.
b. Work out a value for the density of the metal in g/cm3, expressing it to a
suitable number of significant figures.
c. Convert the answer found in (c) to kg/m3.

12. An empty container has a mass of 62 grams. You fill it with 24.6 mL of a liquid. The
final mass of the container is 81.34 grams. What is the density of the liquid in g/cm 3, to
the correct number of significant figures? 1 mL = 1cm3
