This paper presents an experimental investigation of concrete beams prestressed with carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) strands. Four beams were tested under cyclic and monotonic loading. The results showed that bond failure between the CFRP strand and concrete caused early and brittle failures. Adding steel stirrups improved slippage resistance but was not adequate at higher loads. A new anchoring technique using steel tubes prevented slippage and improved flexural capacity by 39%. A computer model was created to predict load-deflection responses and compare the behavior of CFRP beams to steel-strand beams with the same service loads.

3 This paper presents the experimental investigation of concrete beams pre-tensioned with
4 Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) strands. Four rectangular prestressed concrete
5 beams were fabricated and tested under cyclic loading, and then the beams were loaded
6 monotonically until failure. All beams were prestressed with one 0.5-in. diameter (13 mm)
7 CFRP strand. The results showed that bond failure between CFRP strands and surrounding
8 concrete was the main cause of early and brittle failures. Adding extra steel stirrups improved
9 the slippage resistance capacity but was not adequate to prevent slippage at higher loads. A
10 new technique was developed and used by anchoring the CFRP strand at the ends using a
11 steel-tube anchorage system. The new technique prevented the slippage and improved the
12 flexural moment capacity by 39%. An analytical computer model was created to predict the
13 load vs. deflection responses of the beams. The behavior of beams with CFRP strands were
14 compared to beams with steel strands using the same computer program. It was found that
15 CFRP beams had more flexural strength but lower ductility if both beams were designed to
16 carry the same service loads.
