When Mahesh joined XYZ Bank Pvt. Ltd. in 1985, he had one clear goal- to prove his mettle. He did prove
himself and has been promoted five times since his entry into the bank. Compared to others, his
progress has been the fastest. Currently, his job demands that Mahesh should work 10 hours a day with
practically no holidays. At least two days in a week, Mahesh is required to travel. Peers and subordinates
at the bank have appreciation for Mahesh. They don’t grudge the ascension of Mahesh, though there
are some who wish they too had been promoted as well. The post of General Manager fell vacant. One
should work as GM for a couple of years if he were to climb up to the top of the ladder. Mahesh applied
for the post along with others in the bank. The Chairman assured Mahesh that the post would be his. A
sudden development took place which almost wrecked Mahesh’s chances. The bank has the practice of
subjecting all its executives to medical check- up once in a year. The medical reports go straight to the
Chairman who would initiate remedial where necessary. Though Mahesh was only 35, he too, was
required to undergo the test. The Chairman of the bank received a copy of Mahesh’s physical
examination results, along with a note from the doctor. The note explained that Mahesh was seriously
overworked, and recommended that he be given an immediate four- week vacation. The doctor also
recommended that Mahesh’s workload must be reduced and he must take to physical exercise every
day. The note warned that if Mahesh did not care for advice, he would be in for heart trouble in another
six months. After reading the doctor’s note, the Chairman sat back in his chair, and started brooding
over. Three issues were uppermost in his mind- (i) How would Mahesh take this news? (ii) How many
others do have similar fitness problems? (iii) Since the environment in the bank helps create the
problem, what could he do to alleviate it? The idea of holding a stress- management program flashed in
his mind and suddenly he instructed his secretary to set up a meeting with the doctor ad some key staff
members, at the earliest.
Questions:
a. If the news is broken to Mahesh, how would he react? Do you think that the measure finally adopted
by the chairman is the best solution? Why or why not?
b. If you were giving advice to the Chairman on this matter, what would you recommend?

Answer:
From above case study we try to explain Mahesh reactions about his health issue based on his
job career. Typically, the hard working and hard driven employee is under the severe stress in the
organization. When under severe stress, an individual fails to take clear-cut decision, reevaluate
and reassess the priorities and lifestyle, and ultimately, tend to fall into health problems.
Subsequently, Chronic Responsibility Syndrome is a kind of burnout where working people get
mentally and physically exhausted from their workload. From this background about burnout, we
can clearly state that Mahesh is hard worker and wants to be promoted fast as he was already
promoted five times which is the fastest among his co-workers. Mentally he was prepare for the
post of GM but from the report of doctor he was not well physically which leads some effect on
Mahesh mentality.
Here we discuss about Mahesh reaction based on some topic which are as follows.
Blame:
At first he could blame the medical report along with organization as he would feel insecure
about GM post. As Mahesh have great contribution in the company growth and if news broken to
him, he would blame himself and can feel disappointed as he was working for long period of
time. He could think that his career will be over along with his dreams.
Dilemma
A situation will create in which a difficult choice has to be made between his career and health.
Such condition leads to have anger, depression, anxiety etc. on Mahesh.
Demotivation
As Mahesh is expected to be promoted, he will be demotivated towards job and could feel that
the organization couldn’t see him as before and at the end he can be jobless.
Do you think that the measure finally adopted by the chairman is the best solution? Why
or why not?
I think chairman took the best solution as stress management program to handle the bank
environment situation which could be created by doctor’s reports. As stress management is the
tools, strategies, or technique that reduce stress and reduce the negative impacts stress on
employee’s mental and physical well-being. Effective stress management helps to break the hold
stress on our life, so we can be happier, healthier, and more productive. The ultimate goal is a
balanced life, with time for work, relationships, relaxation, and fun- and the resilience to hold up
under pressure and meet challenges head on.

Due to such benefits from stress management a chairman can make balance between employee
health and organization work which will be the sustainable profit.
b. If you were giving advice to the Chairman on this matter, what would you recommend?
Answer:
According to medical research a high demand for job performance in the organization often leads
to unhealthy and unreasonable burnout on the employee. It can even a major factor for stress and
health suffering of the person. The increasing workload, as well as the extreme long work hours,
so as the intense pressure to meet the complex demand of the office tasks can normally leave an
employee physically and psychologically drained. In the same way, excessive travel and too
much time spent in the work place can contribute to health problem on the person. Hence,
excessive work leads to too much pressure and stress among employees that even affect the state
of emotional, mental, and physical condition of a person. It occurs when a person is so
overwhelmed in his professional responsibilities and unable to live a balanced life. And, the
employees may be on the road to health problems if most of the time they are much
overwhelmed by their responsibilities in the work place. And, this condition gives negative
effects to the people at home and in their social life. Burnout and stress can even cause a long
term changes to the human’s body that make him or her vulnerable to various serious illnesses
that can even lead to death.
Therefore, it is highly recommended for the XYZ bank’s chairman, Mahesh and all employees in
the bank to slow down from their workload. In this connection, it is highly recommended for the
chairman to implement a stress management program for all employees in the bank to achieve a
healthy lifestyle among the employees as well as to promote health awareness in the entire
organization. Admittedly, health factor in the work place is very important in order to achieve a
favorable result in the productivity and performance of the employees. The Chairman of the
Bank as well as Mahesh should take the medical result of Mahesh as a serious warning that their
organization needs to deal with the stress problem right away among the employees at large; in
order to prevent further health problems in the bank that may cause a serious financial problem
in the firm.
Relatively, there are various important health tips to fight stress in the work place. First, every
employee should find time to relax, unwind and refresh him or her from a long weekdays
work. Proper ways of recharging one’s self with positive energy helps a person to be motivated
to become better in his or her job. Also, it is very essential that an employee has the regular time
to go home; it is very healthy to the mind and heart to spend a quality time with your family. A
family is the most excellent source of emotional and moral support of any person in this fast-
pacing and competitive world. Aside from that, living a healthy life style such as not taking too
much alcohol, as well as to avoid smoking habit are the two most important factors to achieve a
better health condition while working in a highly stressed working environment.
