Rene Descartes - Reporting

Rene Descartes was a 17th century French mathematician and philosopher known as the "Father of Modern Philosophy". He developed foundational ideas in mathematics like Cartesian coordinates and the Cartesian plane. Descartes believed that the mind and body are distinct substances that interact, with the immaterial mind in control of the material body. He is famous for saying "I think, therefore I am", establishing thought as the basis of knowledge and existence. Descartes made major contributions to both mathematics and philosophy that shaped rational thought for centuries.

WHO IS RENE DESCARTES?

Rene Descartes was a great French

Mathematician and philosopher
during the 17th century. He is
considered as a precursor to the
rationalist school of thought, and due
to his vast contributions to the fields
of mathematics and philosophy, he is
often known as the ‘Father of Modern
Philosophy.’
René Descartes was born in 1596 in
La Haye en Touraine, France, to
Joachim and Jeanne Descartes.
His mother died when he turned
one, and he also remained fairly ill
throughout his childhood.

He and his siblings were raised by

their grandmother, as their father
used to be busy elsewhere with
work and as a council member in
the provincial parliament.
Descartes never married, but he
fathered a child in 1635 with Helena
Jans van der Strom. The child was
named Francine. Unfortunately, he
died at the age of five due to
scarlet fever.
WHAT IS THE IMPACT OF RENE
DESCARTES ON MATHEMATICS?

René Descartes was a

mathematician, philosopher, and
scientist. He developed rules for
deductive reasoning, a system for
using letters as mathematical
variables, and discovered how to plot
points on a plane called the
Cartesian plane.

WHAT WAS THE PERSPECTIVE OF RENE DESCARTES?

Descartes’s concept of the self revolves around the idea of mind-body dualism.

For Descartes, the mind or the soul is superior to the body for it is in the mind that “mental
state” occur.

Beginning from his famous dictum cogito, ergo sum (“I think, therefore I am”), Descartes
developed a theory of mind as an immaterial, nonextended substance that engages in
various activities or undergoes various states such as rational thought, imagining, feeling
(sensation), and willing. Matter, or extended substance, conforms to the laws of physics in
mechanistic fashion, with the important exception of the human body, which Descartes
believed is causally affected by the human mind and which causally produces certain mental
events.
