Accuracy and Precision
Accuracy and Precision
Objectives:
1. To accurately make a calibration of 10ml increment using a glass bottle.
2. To make an improvised measuring cylinder with scale.
3. To make a two improvise cylinder with the same measures.
4. To compare the accuracy and precision of the two improvise cylinder.
Materials:
2 identical glass bottle
2 cups of Water
Medicine cup (with accurate measurement)
Dropper
Ballpen
Ruler
Paper tape
2 liquid colors (optional)
Procedure:
1. Prepare all the materials needed, make sure it is clean before using it.
2. Cut a long strip of tape and attached it vertically on the side of the bottle.
3. Next prepare a 2 cups of clean water, then
pour one of your chosen color on the first cup
then pour the other color on the second cup.
(Coloring the water is optional but I
recommend this technique, to easily see the
lower meniscus of the water.
7. Repeat the 4-6 procedures and mark the strip at increasing order. (20ml,
30ml and so on, until it reaches your desired measure).
8. In making the second DIY measuring cylinder repeat the procedures above.
9. Now the bottles will serve as an improvised measuring cylinder with scale.
Conclusion:
Accuracy is how close a measured value is to the actual value. Precision is how
close the measured values are to each other. As you can see on the result and
discussion, both bottles are accurate and precise in measurement. The calibration of
the bottle A is the same with the calibration of bottle B with both 10ml increments. In
conclusion, bottle A is accurately and precise to the calibration of bottle B, and bottle B
is accurately and precise to the calibration of bottle A.
