BASEBALL
Baseball, usually considered the national sport or pastime of
us, originated within the country and quickly spread to the
Netherlands, Italy, Belgium, England, Spain, Australia, Tunisia,
and other parts of the planet.

Baseball was popularized heavily and is widely considered to

mirror the spirit of us. Numerous articles on the history of
baseball, which weren't very clearly supported historical reports,
were made up and propagated by the media. But common
consensus arrived recently as a result of its immense popularity in
us. It’s said to be North American modification of older English
games like Rounders and Stoolball which also influenced other
similar games like Cricket.

The game turned professional after the war in 1860’s and

attracted commercial interests, yet amateur baseball was equally
popular and was separated from the professional one in 1871.
Though the game was initially played among teams of assorted
ethnic groups within the States, just like the German Americans,
the African Americans, and also the Irish Americans. The game
helped in bringing harmony among the varied ethnic groups and
therefore the Native Americans within the 80’s and 90’s.

Baseball is a bat-and-ball game played between two opposing

teams who take turns batting and fielding. The game proceeds
when a player on the fielding team, called the pitcher, throws a ball
which a player on the batting team tries to hit with a bat. The
objective of the offensive team (batting team) is to hit the ball into
the field of play, allowing its players to run the bases, having them
advance counter-clockwise around four bases to score what are
called "runs". The objective of the defensive team (fielding team) is
to prevent batters from becoming runners, and to prevent
runners' advance around the bases.[2] A run is scored when a
runner legally advances around the bases in order and touches
home plate (the place where the player started as a batter). The
team that scores the most runs by the end of the game is the
winner.
The first objective of the batting team is to have a player reach
first base safely. A player on the batting team who reaches first
base without being called "out" can attempt to advance to
subsequent bases as a runner, either immediately or during
teammates' turns batting. The fielding team tries to prevent runs by
getting batters or runners "out", which forces them out of the field
of play. Both the pitcher and fielders have methods of getting the
batting team's players out. The opposing teams switch back and
forth between batting and fielding; the batting team's turn to bat is
over once the fielding team records three outs. One turn batting for
each team constitutes an inning. A game is usually composed of
nine innings, and the team with the greater number of runs at the
end of the game wins. If scores are tied at the end of nine
innings, extra innings are usually played. Baseball has no game
clock, although most games end in the ninth inning.
Baseball evolved from older bat-and-ball games already being
played in England by the mid-18th century. This game was brought
by immigrants to North America, where the modern version
developed. By the late 19th century, baseball was widely recognized
as the national sport of the United States. Baseball is popular
in North America and parts of Central and South America,
the Caribbean, and East Asia, particularly in Japan, South
Korea and Taiwan.
In the United States and Canada, professional Major League
Baseball (MLB) teams are divided into the National League (NL)
and American League (AL), each with three divisions: East, West,
and Central. The MLB champion is determined by playoffs that
culminate in the World Series. The top level of play is similarly split
in Japan between the Central and Pacific Leagues and in Cuba
between the West League and East League. The World Baseball
Classic, organized by the World Baseball Softball Confederation, is
the major international competition of the sport and attracts the top
national teams from around the world.

Necessary Equipment that is used in

playing Baseball :
 Batting Helmet - Helmet is worn by a batter to protect
his/her head and the ear facing the pitcher from the ball.
While some helmets have ear protectors only on one side as
only the ear facing the pitcher should be protected, helmets
with ear protectors on both sides are more common as some
batters are left handed and some right handed.

 Baseball Cap - All players wear a hat to shade their eyes from
the sun. Baseball hat design has become so popular with the
general public that they are also used to make a style
statement.

 Catcher's Helmet - Catchers wear a helmet with face mask

similar to a hockey goalkeeper mask to protect both their
head and face. Sometimes they might wear a separate helmet
and a facemask

 Uniform - All players, coaches, and managers wear shirts

and pants. Each team has a uniform dress of a specific color
and design.

 Sliding shorts - Players sometimes wear padded support

shorts to protect the player’s thighs when he/she slides into
the bases. Some sliding shorts contain a pocket for a cup
that serves as a jockstrap

 Baseball Cleats - These are baseball specific shoes made of

rubber or metal that players wear for better traction
 Baseball Bat - is a round, solid wooden or hollow aluminum
bat. Wooden bats are traditionally made from ash wood,
though sometimes maple and bamboo are also used.

 Ball - The ball used in baseball is called a baseball. Layers of

yarn or string is rolled on a cork sphere and a leather coat is
stitched over it to make a baseball.

 Gloves - Players wear leather gloves to protect their palms. A

webbed "pocket" between the thumb and first finger helps the
fielder to catch the ball easily.

 Catcher’s Mitt- Catchers wear leather mitts with connected

finger pockets that are much wider and better padded than a
normal fielder's glove.

 First Baseman's Mitt - First basemen wear leather mitts that

are longer and wider than a standard fielder's glove. They are
similar to catcher’s mitt as the four fingers are connected;
additionally, it is rounded and has more padding than a

 Batting Gloves - Batsmen wear gloves on one or both hands

for additional grip and standard fielder's glove. To avoid
shock when they strike the ball.

Baseball Position and Field

function is to throw the ball with the intention that it is not
rebounded by the player of the opposing team.
2. Receiver/Catcher- Its function is to catch the balls that are
thrown by the launchers in case it is not fought by the
player of the opposing team.
3. First baseman- its function is to defend the first base to be

OUTCOMES:
 STRIKEOUT : batter gets to three strikes
 WALK : batter receives four balls before three strikes –
automatic pass to first base
 FLYBALL : hit high in the air, fielders try to catch the
ball to get the batter out
 BASERUNNERS attempt to advance as far as possible
without risking getting out. Runners are safe (cannot be
called out) when they are touching any of the base.
 HOME RUN: if the batter hits the ball out of the field in
fair territory, he (and all runners then on base) get to
circle the bases and score runs.
 DOUBLE PLAY : if there is a baserunner on first, fielders
can force the runner out before relaying the ball to first to
force out the batter
 STOLEN BASE : a baserunner on first can attempt to
run to second base while the pitcher is throwing; if he is
not tagged out before he reaches second, he has stolen
the base
 IF FLYBALL IS CAUGHT, all base runners must returns
to their original base (tagging up) – after that, they may
try to run to additional bases while avoiding being tagged
out.

REGULATIONS:
- consist of 9 innings unless extended because of a tie score
- An inning is that portion of a game within which the teams
alternate on offense and defense and in which there are three
outs for each team. Each team’s time at bat is a half-inning.

 one team bats, one team in the field
 each side gets to bat until three outs are reached
 each pair of batting opportunities is an inning and there are 9
innings in game
 the team with the most points ( runs ) at the end of 9 innings
wins the game
 To score run, a batter/base runner is touch all three bases
and home plate without getting out.
 when a batter/ base runner is touching the base he cannot be
tagged out
 batters appear in order ; once all nine have batted, the first
one bats

HOW DOES A PLAYER OUT:

 BATTING
- strike out : three strikes before contact
- fly out : batted ball is caught before it hits the ground
 RUNNING
- tag out : fielder has ball in glove, touches runner touch
- force out : fielder touches base before runner reaches it ( most
common type of out)

BASEBALL FUNDAMENTAL SKILLS:

- THROWING
- HITTING
- BATTING
- FIELDING
- RUNNING

THINGS TO REMEMBER
 3 STRIKES= 1 OUT; 3 OUTS= 1/2INNING ; 9 INNINGS = 1
GAME
 DEFENSIVE TEAM HAS THE BALL
 NO TIME LIMIT – ONLY THREE OUTS AND INNING
 BATTERS HIT, BECOME BASERUNNERS, RUN
COUNTERCLOCKWISE UNTIL THEY ARE OUT OR TOUCH
HOME PLATE
