This document discusses box plots, including their meaning, construction steps, an example, and merits and demerits. It defines the key parts of a box plot as the minimum, maximum, lower quartile, median, and upper quartile. It provides the steps to construct a box plot using sample data of raisin weights, drawing the corresponding box plot as an example. Some merits listed are that box plots summarize variation and allow comparison of distributions, while demerits include hiding other distribution features and difficulties locating the mean.

Minimum-minimum value of given dataset II. Maximum- maximum value of given dataset III. lower quartile-median of lower half of dataset IV.Upper quartile- median of upper half of dataset V. Median(middle quartile)-middle value of dataset which divides given dataset into two equal parts
Diagram above shows parts of box plot
STEPS OF CONSTRUCTION OF BOX PLOT Steps of construction of box plot can be grouped into two sections I. Finding five-number summary. II. Making box plot.
Finding five-number summary
a)Order the data from the smallest to the largest b) Find the median c)Find the quartiles 1.Upper quartile 2.Lower quartile d)complete the five number summary by finding the maximum and minimum values
Making the box plot
a)Scale and label an axis that fits the five- number summary b) Draw a box from the Q1 to Q2 with the vertical line through the median c)Draw the whisker from the Q1 to the minimum value and from Q3 to maximum value ,this mark the end of construction NB: Labelling of final product(box plot) is not necessary
DATA SAMPLE Consider a sample of 10 boxes of raisins having the following weights (in grams): 25 ,28,29,29,30,34,35,35,37,38
DRAWING OF BOX PLOT
Steps: I. Arrangement of data orderly from smallest to largest ;25 ,28,29,29,30,34,35,35,37,38. II. Finding a median From above data median is the mean of the middle two numbers 30+34 median= 2 =32 III. Finding quartiles Divide the dataset into two equal parts 25,28,29,29,30 and 34,35,35,37,38 Lower quartile-median of lower half =29 Upper quartile-median of upper half=35
IV. From above dataset maximum and minimum
values will be obtained Maximum value =38 Minimum value=25
Box plot of 10 boxes of raisins
MERITS OF BOX PLOT
I. Summarizes variation in large datasets visually II. Compares multiple distributions III. Simple to sketch IV. Exact values not retained
DEMERITS OFBOX PLATE
1)Hides the multimodality and other features of distribution 2)Mean often difficult to locate 3)Outlier calculation too rigid -outliers may be industry-based or case by case
