Performance Bases Reflection

The document discusses performance-based assessment and the importance of assessing students in a way that ensures they understand lessons. It describes how the author's teacher, Ms. Bailey, would ask questions after lessons to validate each student's participation. The author believes performance-based assessment is better than paper tests as it allows students to apply their knowledge and be self-reflective. As future teachers, the author thinks performance-based assessment should be used more, though it requires more time to create and grade activities. The goal is to help students learn holistically by experiencing lessons firsthand.

Performance-based Assessment Reflection

Prior to the video that we had watched uploaded on facebook, Ms.Carla Bailey discuss to
us about her experience in teaching those students specially to those foreign students who are
studying English as their 2nd language .a via zoom discussion together with the staff / teaching
personnel of Benguet State University discuss some of the necessary assessment that a teacher
has within the learner. Her experience helped her a lot specially to us incoming teacher in the
future.

She has been teaching for many years . Ms. Bailey emphasize the importance of
assessing students and I was amazed on how she really makes sure that all her student
participated during discussion . She mentioned that after the lesson. She will then ask question
to her students to make sure that they really understand the topic /lesson to validate the
participation of each member. Even if it’s a student’s have different style in learning.

I think performance-based assessment is sometimes characterized as assessing real life,

with students assuming responsibility for self-evaluation.  Testing is “done” to a student, while
performance assessment is done by the student as a form of self-reflection and self-assessment
which is far way better that paper and pencil exam. Experience is the best teacher, therefore,
letting our student experience first-hand the things we taught them in school would help them
understand and learn more. Performance-based assessment can also evaluate not only their
knowledge but also the different aspect of their ability most likely their creativity.

As future teachers, we should create more performance-based assessment to our students

despite of its limitation. It will take time for us to make and evaluate but practically speaking, it
can help our students more than paper and pencil test. We also have to make sure that in group
activities, each student has an individual grade and we should assess them accordingly using a
rubric or guide questions.

I realized that being a teacher isn’t that easy especially when it comes to evaluating your
students. It takes time and effort to provide your students the best tool for assessment. I always
believe that performance-based assessment is the best assessment a teacher can give to her/his
students. It makes them participate fully and it isn’t boring compared to paper and pencil. The
students can use their different skills depending on the activity given to them. When I was still in
High School, I love it every time my teacher gives us a group activity because it stimulates me
holistically and makes me love my subject even more for it is not boring.

The most difficult part of being a teacher is providing your students’ activities that not
only promote academic excellence but also help them become “human beings”. In the future, I
would maximize performance based assessment by integrating activities that would promote
human values to my students. I need to be geared with patience and understanding for not all of
my students will be able to grasp all the lessons in just a snap of my finger. As what I’ve learned
from one of my Educ classes, “Learning by doing” is vital to students life for experience is the
best teacher. I love this line and I would be happy to integrate such in my teaching career
someday.

My mission is life is to teach those people who are not in proper Education for they need
more help. I might work with NGO’s for the first 5 years of my after graduation life and from
then I will decide on what I’m going to do for my next years in life. After my degree, I might
pursue Masters Degree for me to widen my scope in teaching because I want to teach not only
High School but also lower years.

I always encounter cross road of choices to what I prioritize to become a famous teacher
who has limited contribution or a teacher who in silence but has great achievement and
contribution and I think that I am that teacher who understand the current situation and in the
future Being a teacher is not just focus is in a single side that it must be all sides means that me
as a teacher need to assess everything within myself to my learners, and to everybody’s around
me by assessing them I am proud to myself that I am contribute to society
