Properties of Three States of Matter (Lesson Plan)

The document provides a lesson plan on the properties of the three states of matter - solids, liquids, and gases. The lesson plan aims to explain the properties of each state based on the particle nature of matter. It includes objectives, subject matter, materials, procedures such as preparation, presentation, generalization, values integration, and evaluation. The procedures involve activities like guessing games, identifying examples of each state, discussing particle properties, and assessing understanding.

A Semi-detailed Lesson Plan in Science 8
Properties of the Three States of Matter
I. Objectives:

At the end of lesson 75% of the students should be able to:

 explain the properties of solids, liquids and gases based from the particle nature of
matter (S8MT-IIIa-b-8);
 classify materials as solids, liquids and gases; and
 explain the four basic aspects of the particle nature of matter.
II. Subject Matter:

Topic : Module 1: Properties of the Three States of Matter

Activities : Guessing Game, What’s Inside the House, Complete My Parts
Reference : Science 8 Quarter 3-Module 1: Properties of the three states of matter, E.

Materials : PowerPoint presentation
Procedure:
A. Preparation
1. Daily Routines
a. Checking of Attendance
b. Classroom Management
2. Review
Directions: Classify each of the following as Element, Compound or Mixture.
3. Motivation
Activity: Guessing Game
Guide Questions:
1. My first, second and third letter means in favor.
2. My fourth, fifth and sixth letter means for each.
3. My seventh, eighth, ninth and tenth letter is to attach or fasten.
4. What am I?
Questions Ask after the activity:
 Did you enjoy the Activity?
 Do you still remember the three states of matter?
 What are the three states of matter?
B. Presentation
Task 1. Activity: What’s Inside the House?
Directions: There are so many things inside the house? Can you identify which are solids,
liquids, and gases? List 5 things under the appropriate column.

Task 2: Discussion
The teacher will show a video presentation to the students and will ask questions afterwards.
 Based on the activity What’s Inside the House the students will give examples of solid,
liquid and gas.
 The teacher will discuss the properties of solid, liquid and gas.
 The teacher will explain the basic aspects of the particles of matter.

Generalization
Activity: Complete My Parts
Direction: Complete the table by providing the properties of matter.

Application.
Activity: Who Knows’ the Most?
Direction: The students will identify if the given statement is right or wrong.
1. When the body breaks down food, carbon dioxide is produced as a waste product.
Carbon dioxide is in the liquid state of matter.
2. The particles of gases have the highest kinetic energy.
3. Gases are easier to compress than solids.
4. The particles of a solid are packed closely together and cannot move around, but they
can vibrate.
5. Matter is anything that has no density.
C. Values Integration
It is important for you to know the properties of matter because all things are made up
of matter. Each type of matter has different physical characteristics, and you need to know and
understand these characteristics to make calculations.
The main physical characteristics of matter are mass, volume, weight, density, odor, and
color. These are the characteristics that help us to see
matter, feel matter, and taste matter.
III. Evaluation
I. Direction: For each item, write the letter of the correct answer.
1. Which among the phases of matter is characterized by structural rigidity and resistance
to changes of shape or volume?
A. Solid
B. Liquid
C. Gas
D. Plasma
2. Three states of matter exist – solid, liquid, and gas. Which of the following are the
common properties of liquid?
A. It has no definite shape or volume.
B. It has definite shape and no definite volume.
C. It has a definite shape, and has definite volume.
D. It has a definite volume, but take the shape of the container.

3. Everything that exists can be classified as either a type of matter or a form of energy. Which of the
following is an example of matter?

A. Air C. Time
B. Heat D. Sunlight
4. Three states of matter exist – solid, liquid, and gas. Which of the following are the common
properties of solid?
A. It has no definite shape or volume.
B. It has definite shape and no definite volume.
C. It has a definite shape, and has definite volume.
D. It has a definite volume, but take the shape of the container.
5. Three states of matter exist – solid, liquid, and gas. Which of the following are the common
properties of gas?
A. It has no definite shape or volume.
B. It has definite shape and no definite volume.
C. It has a definite shape, and has definite volume.
D. It has a definite volume, but take the shape of the container.

II. Directions: Using the illustrations below, select the letter that corresponds to your answers. Do this
on your notebook/on a separate sheet of paper.

A B C

6. Which of the illustrations shows that the particles can move freely in all
directions?
7. Which of them shows almost no spaces between the particles?
8. Which do you think has a similarity with the particles of a gas?
9. Which one represents the particles of solids?
10. Which of them must be the particles of liquids?
IV. Assignment.
