CONTEXT Aravali HIlls

RAAS, DEVIGARH

- Located in the Aravali Hills, RAAS Devigarh is an all-suites

luxury hotel housed within an 18th century palace fortress.
- A 39-room heritage hotel and resort, Devigarh Palace was
earlier home to the rulers of Delwara in Rajasthan.
- Setting out to create a boutique experience drawing from the
historic setting, Studio Lotus conceptualized a two-phased
approach for the project.
- The landscape has allowed conversations at different levels-
between the architecture and the landscape, the landscape and the
surroundings and most importantly, the landscape and the history
of the spaces within the fort.

- To connect the spaces, a metal staircase - rendered in the

same grey as the local sandstone - has been crafted, whose
perforated plates and metal balusters sit lightly against the solidity
of the historic edifice.
- In the Durbar Hall, the shell has been similarly stripped of
plaster to reveal the grey and red sandstone detailing.
A bespoke wenge-wood bar forms the visual anchor in the
lounge, with plush furnishings and low-hung lights introducing
intimacy to the previously bare space.

- The dining room was all white with spotless marble flooring, silver plat-
ed chairs, fine bone china with silver cutlery, exquisite meena carvings
on the roof and walls, and a panoramic view of the Aravali hills and the
villages below from the jharokhas.

- Restored to their former glory, the jharokhas along the Durbar

Hal have been turned into cozy baithak-style seating spaces,
offering panoramic views of the valley. The verandah also serves
as a viewing gallery for performances in the Lounge; a neutral
colour palette combined with added elements such as inlaid marble
tabletops with ludo layout evoke a sense of laidback luxury.

- The Palace interiors, as part of an old restoration drive, had

been swathed in white plaster - which detracted from the user
experience and induced a sense of monotony as one moved
through the spaces. With the original sandstone columns stripped
bare, the renewed F&B spaces in the poolside West Wing have
been populated with contemporary inserts in timber and brass, and
feature frescos in lime plaster.
- Besides design and structure, the hotel has also preserved
much of the heritage associated with the fort, which was lying in
ruins for many years until it was restored.

LANDSCAPE
-At all times, the landscape is conscious of the
desert and the scarcity of water that it is surrounded
by. Systems have been created for the conservation
and storage of water.
- In the Kamal Court, water channels that run for
150 feet mimic the patterns of a lotus in bloom.

LANDSCAPE
- The Zenana court holds at its centre a
stambh made of stone. The fountain is a tribute to
the courage of the women of Rajasthan.
- The smaller terraces mimic the mountains that
they are surrounded by.
- The Darbar Court, or the Royal Court, is marked
by a white marble throne, surrounded by black
flooring. It suggests the representation of a Cosmos
made up of its various elements and dualities.
The throne is shaded by a Tree of Life.
