1 Safety

1.1 Symbol description

These symbols are used to warn against potential safety hazards or causes of
damage or provide useful information.

Hazard warning
This symbol appears in the operating instructions next to all instructions relating to
safety at work wherever a potential hazard to life and limb exists if the instructions
are not complied with. Follow these instructions at all times and be particularly
vigilant and cautious. Pass on safety instructions to all persons entrusted with
working on Demag DR rope hoists including any associated equipment and the
power supply. In addition to the safety instructions, observe all general safety
regulations and factory accident prevention regulations at all times.

Warning against dangerous electrical voltage

Contact with live parts can result in immediate death, even when these parts have
been disconnected from the electrical power supply caused by energy-storing
components such as capacitors. Protective covers (e.g. covers and enclosures)
marked with this sign may only be opened by qualified electricians. Before opening,
all relevant operating, control, feed or other voltages must be disconnected.

Operating hazard for the installation

This symbol in the operating instructions indicates all warnings which, if not complied
with, may result in damage to the Demag DC chain hoist or Demag DR rope hoist,
the installation or the goods to be transported.

Information
This symbol indicates tips and useful information.

1.2 Appropriate use

IDAPSY is designed for receiving, transmitting (DR only) and managing data for the
Demag DC chain hoist and Demag DR rope hoist.
When using the IDAPSY service tool, all safety instructions that apply to the
operation of Demag chain hoists, types DC and Demag rope hoists, type DR, must
be complied with.

1.3 Safety instructions

The relevant national accident prevention regulations, codes of practice and the
general safety conditions must always be observed when our products are operated
in order to avoid accidents and damage to machinery. If the safety instructions given
in these operating instructions are not observed in any way, personal injury or even
death can result.

Dangerous voltage
Demag DC chain hoists or DR rope hoists are connected to a mains power supply.
Any contact with live parts can lead to very serious injury or even death.

Only carry out maintenance and installation work

• if the Demag DC chain hoist or DR rope hoist is at zero voltage,
• if the Demag DC chain hoist or DR rope hoist is secured against accidental
restoration of the power supply,
• if all cables, motor terminals and capacitors are at zero potential (establish with
a voltmeter),
• with insulated tools.

-7-
To ensure that Demag DC chain hoists or DR rope hoists are switched off
independently of the mains supply, a circuit interrupter or a line contactor must be
installed between the power supply and the Demag DC chain hoist or DR rope hoist.
Control and power supply cables must be laid separately.

According to current legislation, the owner of an installation must fulfil certain

obligations with a view to protecting personnel. These are:
• Ensuring proper instruction of personnel
• Ensuring that the operating instructions are available for reference at the point
of application of the equipment
• Additional instructions including supervisory and reporting obligations making
allowance for particular operational aspects, e.g. with respect to work
organisation, operational sequences, personnel employed
• Review of personnel to ensure that they are aware of the safety requirements
and hazards involved in the work and the associated operating instructions
• Ensuring that the Demag DC chain hoist or DR rope hoist is operated only
when in perfect operating condition and that all relevant safety requirements
have been allowed for
• Immediate shut-down of the Demag DC chain hoist or DR rope hoist as soon
as a defect or irregularity is established.

8
2 Product description

The IDAPSY service tool is designed for receiving and managing data for the Demag
DC chain hoist and Demag DR rope hoist. In this sense, data are programming data
inside the unit, data that the unit (DC, DR) collects and data that are added manually
in the software (e.g. comments). Parameter data are e.g. serial number, load
detection and by-pass control. Collected data are e.g. elapsed operating time
counter, starts, travel distance and error messages.

The software has been created to help provide an optimum service. Therefore, all the
data stored in the unit can be/are transmitted via the Internet to a central server,
where the data can be evaluated.
As soon as data for a Demag DC chain hoist or DR rope hoist have been saved on
this server, they can be called up from the central server prior to servicing. Thus you
have access to the “history data” (factory settings, previous service work) of the chain
hoists or rope hoists at any time.

The following operating modes are possible:

• Working offline: Documentation, viewing and checking data sets (e.g. error
memory) without a connection to the DC chain hoist or DR rope hoist.

• Working online:
• Establishing a connection with the Demag DC chain hoist or DR rope hoist
• Downloading the parameters from the Demag DC chain hoist or DR rope
hoist
• Saving as data set on the PC

2.1 Data exchange

2.1.1 Demag DC chain hoist

Data are exchanged between notebook and Demag DC chain hoist via an infrared
interface. The IDAPSY kit comprises a
suitable sensor.
The serial SUB-D connection cable included
in the supply can be used as an extension
cable.

The infrared interface (IrDA) integrated in

the notebook cannot be used for IR transmission
communication with the DC. (reading only)

The sensor is connected to the notebook’s

RS232 (COM) interface. COM port
assignment in the IDAPSY program is under
the “Settings/IR connection” menu item.

-9-
2.1.2 Demag DR rope hoist
Data are exchanged between notebook and Demag DR rope hoist via the USB/CAN
interface or via the infrared interface (IrDA) integrated in the notebook.

Before commissioning the USB/CAN interface, you need to install the USB drivers
necessary for communication.

See [Chapter 3.4]

“Hardware installation”
for further information.

In addition, you can change the language

of the program in this window (see
“Changing the language” in
[chapter 4.1.4]

4.1.4 Changing the language

The program language can be changed via the Basic data window. IDAPSY is
available in 6 languages:
German English
French Spanish
Italian Portuguese

Close and re-start the program to activate a newly selected language.

The language of the program (IDAPSY interface) and the language of

parameter help texts are available in two different files. Since the parameter
help texts comprise a large volume of data, only the help file suitable for the
program language of the first installation is installed with the software.
Therefore the language of the parameter help texts is not changed
automatically when the program language is changed via the Basic data
menu.

There are two possibilities of adapting the parameter help language to the
language of the program:
Load the new parameter help file from the Internet at www.dccsupport.de and
copy this file (after unpacking) to the IDAPSY directory
Default: “C:\Programs\Demag\IDAPSY\....”

After you have selected the new language, closed and opened the program
again, carry out an update (see [chapter 7.4.]). The parameter help text
corresponding to the new program language will then be copied to the existing
help file so that, in future, the previous as well as the new parameter help will
be available.
This means that every time the program language is changed between the
previous and the new language, the corresponding help will also be
automatically changed.
Attention: Each parameter help file (language) has a data volume of approx.
20 MB.

5 Working with IDAPSY and the Demag DC chain hoist

Every application of the IDAPSY service tool on a Demag DC chain hoist or a Demag
DR rope hoist is based on an order. This may be a service order within the
framework of inspection or maintenance work but also applications in connection with
installation or commissioning and general applications for documentation purposes.
In general, the IDAPSY service tool can be used in two operating modes - - - ->
Online and Offline.

Online mode: Communication between PC/notebook and Demag DC chain hoist

or Demag DR rope hoist, downloading, changing individual
parameters, reading the error memory, exporting and importing
data sets from / to the central server, etc.
In addition, all functions that are also available in offline mode.

Offline mode: Checking parameter values, saved data sets, printing data sets,
exporting and importing parameter sets, etc.

To read the parameters from the Demag DC chain hoist,

connect the IR adapter from the IDAPSY kit to the serial
interface (RS232) of your PC/notebook and start the IDAPSY
program.

When the program is used for the first time, set the COM port for the IR adapter now.
Usually the serial
interface of your
PC/notebook is assigned
COM port 1

5.1 Create an order

You can now create a new order or change or supplement an existing order by using
the icon

The order number may consist of a total of 30 characters (letters and figures), which
you can enter directly in the blank Order no. field.

If you want to use an existing order, open the “Order no.” list box (arrow) and select
the required order. If you do not know the order no. but the serial no., which can be
read on the type plate of the Demag DC chain hoist, you can select it in the “Filtering
of serial no.” field.

- 22 -
Then all orders (from your local database) will be displayed which have been created
for a Demag DC chain hoist with this serial no.

Confirm your selection with “OK”.

The program window which is similar to Windows Explorer is then opened. As

default, the main group “Demag ChainHoist DC” is highlighted in the parameter
group column.

Open the main group by double-clicking the “Demag ChainHoist DC” group name or
click on the cross. When the DC data group has been selected, the parameters
available for the Demag DC chain hoist appear in the data columns.

If you have opened an existing order, the data (parameter values) of the data set
saved last for this order are displayed in the “Received parameters” and “Saved data
database” columns. In addition, “General data”, if available.

5.2 Read parameters

Activate the IR interface by selecting the “Connect IR/IrDA” icon

In the next window you can choose among three different types of transmission:

1. Unique call up After you have clicked “OK”, the program attempts
once to establish a connection to the Demag DC chain
hoist and to read the data.
For successful transmission of data, the IR transmitter
of the Demag DC chain hoist and the IR receiver on
the PC must be perfectly aligned to each other.

2. Permanent monitoring After you have clicked "OK", the data are read from the
Demag DC chain hoist regularly, i.e. communication is
automatically triggered by the program on a regular
basis.
Transmission is only interrupted (stopped), if you
activate the “Disconnect IR/IrDA” icon

23
Benefit of this function: Your are given sufficient time to align the IR receiver on the
notebook to the IR transmitter of the Demag DC chain hoist. Parameters such as the
Contactor switching operations value are also constantly updated.

3. Serial call up with break

of … Seconds This function can be selected when you read several
chain hoists one after the other and you do not wish to
restart transmission each time. With the break time,
you determine the time after which the program
attempts again to read data from the Demag DC chain
hoist.

As soon as you confirm your selection with “OK”, the “IR off ” display

in the status bar changes from (grey) to (yellow)

i.e. communication between the Demag DC chain hoist and the PC/notebook has
been started.

When data are transmitted, the display changes to (green) .

If communication fails, the icon (red) indicates this to you.

Check whether the COM port has been appropriately set for IR transmission and
whether the IR receiver is correctly connected on the serial interface (RS232). Start
the process again.

5.3 Save a data set

Following each download (reading data from the Demag DC chain hoist), a data set
is automatically saved. All data sets saved in the local database for a serial no., even
if they have been created within the framework of various orders (applications), can
be viewed via the “Data set” list. Each data set is provided with a consecutive no., the
order no. of the relevant application, the date and the time.

6 Working with IDAPSY and the Demag DR rope hoist

6.1 USB/CAN interface (communication of data via the USB/CAN

interface)

6.1.1 Create an order

Every application of the IDAPSY service tool on a Demag DR rope hoist is based on
an order. This may be a service order within the framework of inspection or
maintenance work but also applications in connection with installation or
commissioning and general applications for documentation purposes.

You can now create a new order or change or supplement an existing order by using
the icon

The order number may consist of a total of 30 characters (letters and figures), which
you can enter directly in the blank Order no. field.

If you want to use an existing order, open the “Order no.” list box (arrow) and select
the required order. If you do not know the order no. but the serial no., which can be
read on the type plate of the Demag DR rope hoist, you can select it in the “Filtering
of serial no.” field.

Then all orders from your IDAPSY database (on the hard disk of your notebook/PC)
will be displayed which have been created for a Demag DR rope hoist with this
serial no.

Confirm your selection with “OK”.

The program window which is similar to Windows Explorer is then opened. As

default, the main group “Demag ChainHoist DC” is highlighted in the parameter
group column.

Change to the “Demag RopeHoist DR” main group and open the main group by
double-clicking the group name or click on the cross.

Like in Windows Explorer, you can now select the sub-groups of the DR to display
the parameters available for the Demag DR rope hoist in the data columns.

- 25 -
If you have opened an existing order, the data (parameter values) of the data set
saved last for this order are displayed in the “Received parameters” “Saved data
database” columns. In addition, “General data”, if available.

In general, there are two possibilities of starting communication with the Demag DR
rope hoist:
1. via cable using the CAN BUS interface included in the supply of the IDAPSY
service tool
2. wireless via the IrDA interface of the notebook/PC and the DRC-10 hand-held
transmitter or the DSE-8R (DSE-10R) control pendant.

6.1.2 Download
(read parameters)
via the USB/CAN interface
The driver for the USB/CAN interface has been installed acc. to [Chapter 3.4].
Connect the CANBUS interface with your notebook/PC by means of the USB cable
and with the V24 interface cable to a free CANBUS interface of the electrical
equipment of the Demag DR rope hoist.
Check functioning of the interface by checking the LEDs. The green LED (points in
the direction of the Demag DR rope hoist) is on when the power supply is working.
The yellow LED (points towards the Demag DR rope hoist) is on/flashes when
communication between the interface and the electrical equipment of the rope hoist
has been established, the yellow LED (points towards the notebook/PC) is on when
communication between the interface and the notebook/PC has been established.

After you have opened an order [Chapter 6.1.1] and the working window of IDAPSY
is open, you can establish data communication with the Demag DR rope hoist.

Either via the “Connections” menu or via the toolbar by actuating the icon (Connect
CANBUS) . The icon changes to and the status display for communication
(right bottom) changes to (yellow) .. At the same time, the “DR -> PC

transfer” icon becomes active. Start download by clicking the icon.

The status display must switch over from (yellow) to (green) .

Progress of reading the data is indicated by a bar.

Data are read in the following sequence: trolley electrical equipment 1, trolley
electrical equipment 2 and crane electrical equipment irrespective of whether the
corresponding electrical equipment is connected to the CANBUS or not. If the
corresponding electrical equipment is connected to the bus, the bar counts upwards
in steps. If the electrical equipment is not connected, the bar moves to the next
electrical equipment – trolley or crane.

If communication fails, the status display changes to (red).

Check whether the CANBUS interface functions properly and all connections have
been correctly plugged on. In addition, check whether the DR control system is
supplied with control voltage (48 V AC). Close communication via the “Disconnect
CANBUS” icon and start communication again.

26
After successful transmission of data from the Demag DR rope hoist to the
notebook/PC, all parameters read are visible on the desktop.
For each electrical equipment found and read, an own data level is created.
Following a download, first all data from any available crane electrical equipment are
shown since it is the last to be read.

In the “Filter” data field, the type of electrical equipment is indicated. The serial no.
also shows which type of electrical equipment is on the active data level. As the serial
no. of the electrical equipment is also its unique address in the system, each
electrical equipment must have its own serial no.
There are two distinguishing features:

1. The leading (first) figure of the serial no. – For a system consisting of trolley
electrical equipment and crane electrical equipment, both control systems are
provided with the serial no. of the system (Demag DR rope hoist). The trolley
electrical equipment is always given a leading < 9 > and the crane electrical
equipment a leading < 0>, i.e.

999 999 99 = Trolley

099 999 99 = Crane

2. The following (last) figure of the serial no. – Automatically identifies the serial
no. of any available electrical equipment with the “type of control system”. This is
a parameter from the basic data of the Demag DR rope hoist which determines
whether the existing control system is trolley electrical equipment (value = 0) or
crane electrical equipment (value = 2), i.e.

999 999 99 - 0 = Trolley

999 999 99 - 1 =..Foot-mounted hoist
099 999 99 - 2 = Crane

It is possible to move from one read data level (trolley or crane electrical equipment)
to another under the current order number by means of the “Serial no.” list field.

6.1.3 Save parameters

Following each download (reading data from the Demag DR chain hoist), a new data
set is automatically saved.
A data set contains all data levels (trolley electrical equipment and crane electrical

equipment) read for a system.

All data sets saved in the local database for a serial no., even if they have been
created within the framework of various orders (applications), can be viewed via the
“Data set” list. Each data set is provided with a consecutive no., the order no. of the
relevant application, the date and the time.

27
6.2 IrDA interface (communication of data via the IrDA interface)

6.2.1 Create an order

Then all orders (from the local database on the hard disk of your notebook/PC) will
be displayed which have been created for a Demag DR rope hoist with this serial no.

Like in Windows Explorer, you can now select the sub-groups to display the
parameters available for the Demag DR rope hoist in the data columns.

If you have opened an existing order, the data (parameter values) of the data set
saved last for this order are displayed in the “Received parameters” “Saved data
database” and “Changing parameters” columns. In addition, “General data”, if
available.

In general, there are two possibilities of starting communication with the Demag DR
rope hoist:
• via cable using the CAN BUS interface included in the supply of the IDAPSY
service tool [Chapter 6.1]
• wireless via the IrDA interface of the notebook/PC and the DRC-10 hand-
held transmitter or the DSE-8/16R (DSE-10R) control pendant [Chapter 6.2].

- 28 -
6.2.2 DSE-8/10R control pendant (setup for IrDA communication)
With the Demag DSE-8/16R control pendant, data can only be read from the Demag
DR rope hoist.

6.2.3 DRC-10 hand-held radio transmitter (setup for IrDA communication)

In order to be able to transmit data between the rope hoist electrical equipment and
the notebook/PC by means of the DRC-10 hand-held radio transmitter, the IrDA
function of the hand-held radio transmitter must always be switched on before the
IrDA function is activated in IDAPSY.

“IrDA” mode in the hand-held radio transmitter is activated with a key combination.

Press the STOP key Press the LOWER Press the LEFT
and hold it down ! key once! key 2 x !

Press the LOWER key Release the LOWER key and

and hold it down for 5 sec. ! the STOP key again !

Align the hand-held radio transmitter with its front side (plastic window) in the
direction of the IrDA interface of the notebook/PC.

29
6.2.4 Download (read parameters) via IrDA
Actuate the “Connect IR/IrDA” icon in the tool bar. The status display for the
IrDA connection must change from (grey) to (yellow) .

At the same time, the “Disconnect IR/IrDA” and the “DR -> PC transfer”
icons become active.

Start download by clicking the icon

The status display must switch over from (yellow) to (green) .

Progress of reading the data is indicated by a bar.

Data are read in the following sequence: trolley electrical equipment 1, trolley
electrical equipment 2 and crane electrical equipment irrespective of whether the
corresponding electrical equipment is connected to the CANBUS or not. If the
corresponding electrical equipment is connected to the bus, the bar counts upwards
in steps. If the electrical equipment is not connected, the bar moves to the next
electrical equipment scan.

Note !! Owing to slow data transmission of the radio control system, transmission of
data may take several minutes!

If communication fails, the status display of communication changes to (red)

Check whether the IrDA interface of the hand-held radio transmitter still works
correctly. In addition, check whether the DR control system is supplied with control
voltage (48 V AC).
Close communication via the “Disconnect IR/IrDA” icon and start download
again.

After successful transmission of data from the Demag DR rope hoist to the
notebook/PC, all parameters read are visible on the desktop.

For each electrical equipment found and read, an own data level is created.
Following a download, first all data from any available crane electrical equipment is
shown since it is the last to be read.

In the “Filter” data field, the type of electrical equipment is indicated. The serial no.

also shows which type of electrical equipment is on the active data level. As the serial
no. of the electrical equipment is also its unique address in the system, each
electrical equipment must have its own serial no.

30
There are two distinguishing features:

1. The leading (first) figure of the serial no. – For a system consisting of trolley
electrical equipment and crane electrical equipment, both control systems are
provided with the serial no. of the system. In the software, the trolley electrical
equipment is always given a leading < 9 > and the crane electrical equipment a
leading < 0>, i.e.

999 999 99 - 1 = Foot-mounted hoist
099 999 99 - 2 = Crane

It is possible to move from one read data level (trolley or crane electrical equipment)
to another under the current order number by means of the “Serial no.” list field.

6.2.5 Save parameters

Following each download (reading data from the Demag DR chain hoist) a new data
set is automatically saved.

31
7 Further functions

Every data set that is created by IDAPSY after a download, is then only saved in the
local IDAPSY database on the hard disk of the PC / notebook.

IDAPSY offers two possibilities of retrieving data/data sets from the local database or
passing them on to other users:

• Export or import data sets

• Export or import parameter sets

7.1 Save data sets via the Internet

For permanent and central management and evaluation of data, an IDAPSY main
server at Demag Cranes & Components GmbH in Wetter is available to which all
data sets can be exported in addition to the local database.

7.1.1 Export data set

When you use the “Internet data export” function, only those data sets are
exported to the IDAPSY main server which have not yet been sent to the
server. Therefore only a small data volume is transmitted if the export function
is used regularly.

The user can thus permanently save data sets for other users (e.g. employees
or colleagues) for later use or documentation purposes on the IDAPSY main
server.

Note !! An Internet connection is required for using the “Internet data export” as well
as the “Internet data import” functions.

7.1.2 Import data set

The saved (exported) data sets can – of course – also be re-imported to the
PC / notebook from this server.

Attention !! If you use the “Period from ... to ...” selection criterion, please note that
the pre-set period may cover several years. As a result, the system may attempt to
import several thousand data sets to the PC / notebook.

- 32 -
Extensive protection mechanisms ensure that individual users can only import those
data for which they have been authorized. For this reason, all data sets are provided
with a code for the individual users which results from the registration of the IDAPSY
service tool.
Various user codes can then be combined to form groups so that, for example, the
maintenance and repair sector of a company can only access the data sets of its
group/employees. And, therefore, also only this company can access its own
data/data sets of its employees.

7.2 Save data sets to local data media

The “Export parameter set / import parameter set” function is used when for technical
reasons, no Internet access is available for data exchange with the PC / notebook or
when extension kits (Demag DR rope hoist function extension) are used.

7.2.1 Export parameter set

With the “Export parameter set” function, the currently active data set is isolated
from the IDAPSY database and saved to the hard disk of the PC / notebook as an
independent file.
The name of the file can be freely selected, the file extension is fixed.
– The file name may be, for example: data_crane04.sdr.

Files created in this way can then be documented, distributed and saved in the
common methods.

7.2.2 Import parameter set

All so-called SDR data sets can be added to the local database with IDAPSY by
using the “Import parameter set” function.

Some safety measures must be taken to add these SDR data sets to the local
database and then also load them to a Demag DR rope hoist.

Each SDR data set, like any data set managed in IDAPSY, is only valid for one serial
number and, therefore, only for one Demag DR rope hoist.
I.e. it is not possible to load a data set with a serial number that differs from the serial
number saved in the control system of the Demag DR rope hoist.
This measure is necessary to prevent any manipulation and unauthorized changes of
the electrical control system of the Demag DR rope hoist.

Procedure: Import of data sets is only possible in online mode. This means that
before the “Import parameter set” function is used, a download to the relevant rope
hoist control system must have been carried out. IDAPSY then knows the serial
number of this particular rope hoist. It is now possible to import the required SDR
data set, which includes the same serial number, to IDAPSY.

The data set imported into the program in this way can now be processed as
described in [Chapter 7].

33
This function makes it possible to make necessary changes to parameters of the
rope hoist control system at any time without authorization to change individual data.
If necessary, these data sets (SDR data sets) may be made available by
[email protected] of Demag Cranes & Components GmbH.

The parameter changes required for the application of an extension kit (advanced
options) can also be easily carried out by an authorized user of the IDAPSY service
tool, since each extension kit includes the relevant data set.

7.3 Import IDAPSYPocket data sets

Users of a version of “IDAPSYPocket” for pocket PC’s (PDAs) can import data
sets read by means of the PDA from the Demag DR rope hoist to the IDAPSY
database on the notebook / PC for documentation.

Preparation measures on the PDA:

Save the required data set/s to the memory card or the main memory of the PDA
via the Data menu item in IDAPSYPocket.
Then transfer the data set/s to the notebook / PC.

Please refer to the operating instructions of the PDA.

All pocket data sets imported from the PDA in this way can be recognised by their
extension ____.inc (e.g. 99999999.inc).

These data sets can be read to the IDAPSY service tool via the “Import Pocket data
set” function.

7.4 Update
Like any other application software, the IDAPSY service tool must also be
adapted to a changed scope of functions of the control software of the Demag
DR rope hoist or the Demag DC chain hoist at regular intervals. Improved
function processes and extended service functions make it necessary to
regularly update the system.

The “Update” function completes two important processes:

• Automatic download and subsequent installation of the up-to-date

software tool
• Automatic export of all new data sets (since the last update) to the
IDAPSY main server

Precondition! The notebook/PC must feature an Internet connection.

When the “Update” function in the “Connections” menu has been selected, the
program automatically starts to establish a connection to the IDAPSY main server.

When the connection has been established, new software updates are searched on
the IDAPSY main server.

34
In this case, updating of the
software is not necessary.

When the message has been

confirmed with “OK”, all new data
sets created since the last update
are automatically exported to the
IDAPSY main server from the local
database (hard disk).

If new (up-to-date) software tools are found on the IDAPSY main server, the user can
decide whether he wants to accept these new data for download.

This is of particular importance if the new data comprise a large volume (several
Mbytes) and the Internet access only has a low data transmission rate (e.g. analogue
modem). The “Update” can be repeated at any time.
