EPISODE 3: CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT AND LEARNING
INSTRUCTION: WORKSHEETS #3
Batch 1
Do the following tasks:
1. Observe a class.
2. Using a checklist, find out the evident classroom components.
3. Describe how the classroom is structured/designed to allow everyone to participate in the learning activities.
4. Relate the date in your checklist to the learners’ behavior.
5. Reflect on how classroom management affects learning.
OBSERVATION GUIDE:
1. As you observe the class, look into the characteristics of the learners. Note their ages.
2. How many boys are there? How many girls are there?
3. Focus on their behavior. Are they already able to manage their own behavior?
4. Can the learners already work independently?
5. Describe their life span of attention.
6. Look into their listening skills and ability to concentrate.
OBSERVATIONAL REPORT
Name of School observed Grade/Level
Date of visit/observation Time of Observation
The Observation Report was done before the pandemic, year 2018-2019, in a Grade 9 class.
During the observation, there were 42 students, there are 23 boys and 19 girls. Their age range is about 14-16 years
old. Before the teacher enter the class, we can already hear some noises outside the corridors and when the teachers
is about to enter the room, the noises starts to fade. Upon entering you can already see the students going to their
perspective seats and are looking straight in the front. There are also students who are a little bit noisy and seem like
they didn’t saw their teacher to enter the class. As they start the class, the teacher started to check their attendance
whereas you can see the students being attentive, waiting for their names to be called and say that they are present.
When the teacher starts to discuss you can see already how attentive the class into listening. There were some
student’s busy taking down notes and copying what the teacher writes in the board. You can also see some students
just sitting and staring their teachers. When the teacher ask questions, some students are staring down and avoiding
eye contact with their teacher and there are some who are brave and just waiting for their name to be called. After a
long hour of discussion, I observed that some students are getting bored and are not listening to their teachers. You
can already see other student doing stuffs just like drawing on their papers. Those students who tend to be attentive
are sitting on the back part of the seats, while those whose attentions are easily distracted especially boys are seated in
front. With this you can see that the boys seating on the front are being tamed and trained to be attentive. After the
discussion, the students are tasked to answer their activity that is written on the book. There are those students who
can work independently and there are also students who are asking answers from their seatmates.
CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT MATRIX
You may ask the teacher for additional information to verify your observations. Be guided with the
questions below:
1. Are there areas in the classroom for specific purposes (storage of teaching aids, books,
students’ belongingness, supplies, etc.)
2. Are there rules and procedures posted in the room?
3. Did the students participate in making the classroom rules?
4. What are the daily routines done by the teacher? (prayer, attendance, assignment of
monitors, warm-up activities, etc.) How are they done?
5. Is there a seating arrangement? What are the basis of this arrangement?
6. Observe the noise level in the classroom. How is this managed?
7. If a learner is not following instructions or is off-task, what does the teacher do? (behavioral
strategies)
8. What does the teacher do to reinforce positive behaviors? (behavior strategies)
Notes:
1. Yes there are areas in the classroom for specific purposes such as chalk storage which is
placed on the left side of the board, cabinet for the books and instructional materials, locker
for the personal things of the students, and a cabinet specifically for the cleaning materials.
2. There are no rules and procedures posted in the room of the students, however classroom
rules and regulations were discussed during the first day of school by their advisers and are
discussed with the students.
3. Yes the students participated in making the classroom rules, after they voted for the
classroom officers.
4. The daily routine of the teacher is to check attendance, some are starting with a prayer,
when there is an assignment, and the teacher collects it first and try to discuss it with the
students before they proceed with the next discussion.
5. Yes there is a seating arrangement, the seat plan is placed in the teachers table wherein
they can use this as a basis to memorize the name and face of their students. The seating
arrangement is done by pairing the boys and girls together, and placing those noisy students
in the front.
6. The class is not that too noisy, there are some minimal noise, just like when a student asking
a paper and borrowing pen from their seat mate. The class can also be noisy, most
especially if the topic is about some teenage love story and is related with their topic.
Students are also noisy when there is a group activity being done. If the class is too noisy,
the teacher warns and remind the class to lower and minimize their voices.
7. If a learner is not following the instruction or is off the task, the teacher repeats it again and
use other language where it can be easily understood by the student. The teacher also ask a
help from the seatmate of the student who is off the task to show how the activity is done
properly. There are times when the teacher go near the student and explain it properly to
him or her.
8. In order to reinforce positive behavior by giving the students a motivation. She shows some
positive reaction when the students are listening and are doing their task properly. She
praise them with positive words, she gives them thumbs up or a round of applause. For
some they even give plus points to those students who answers the question of the teacher
correctly.

ANALYSIS
1. How did the classroom organization and routine affect the learners’ behavior?
The classroom organization and routine affect the learner’s behavior to act accordingly and follow the structure
routine that they have. Having an organize classroom enables the students to behave properly and morally. This
also means that the teacher is keeping an eye on their behaviors and development as a learner. The routine that
every classroom have can also pose positive behavior to the students. With this students are trained to do things
earlier and follow the routine they have which is good because students are trained to things normally and to
perform their responsibility as a student. This routine they have can also be their guide in their classrooms and
perform their task properly. In addition, students learn better when the classroom is organize. When they have an
organize classroom then surely the students will also be trained to be organize, not only on their rooms but also at
their homes and workplace in the future.
2. What should teacher have in mind when she/he designs the classroom organization and routines? What
theories and principles should you have in mind?
When a teacher designs, she/he should always put in mind his/her students. As a teacher, we should always bear in
mind comfortability of our student. We should also consider the positive outcome and negative outcome that it might
give to the student when this is already enforced. The teacher should think if the classroom organization and routine
she/he designed would be fit the standards and age of the students. In addition when a teacher designs the classroom
organization and routine she/he should communicate or talked with his/her students. With this students could voice out
their wants and needs towards their learning.
The theories or principles the teachers should have in mind when designing the classroom organization and routines
are Rogers’s Unconditional Positive Regard by Carl Rogers which focused on ensuring students know that they are
cared for, appreciated and trusted by the teacher. Teachers should always let students know that they are inherently
good and can do good things if they put their mind to it. Even when a student misbehaves, the teacher should show the
student “Unconditional Positive Regard”. This means that the teacher should show the student that they always believe
in the student, believe they can improve, and have goodness inside them. Rogers particularly highlighted the
importance of teachers affirming to their students that they are inherently good and capable people.
3. Which behavior strategies were effective in managing the behavior of the learners? In motivating students?
Why were they effective?
I think the behavior strategy that was effective in managing the behavior of the learners is by applying the theory of
Behavior by B.F. Skinner, Ivan Pavlov. I think the strategy of reward and punishment would help the teacher and
students to achieve the desired behaviors. A teacher who uses this approaches will have a velar rules and clear
punishment and rewards for their learners. The reward system could be really effective to motivate the students, when
students know that when they do well in their activities then surely they will feel motivated to do well in their classes.
This is effective because students, according to the theory, anyone can be trained to be well-behaved. All the teacher
needs to do is teach the students to associate some behaviors with negative consequences and other behaviors with
positive consequences. Over time, students will learn to do the positive behaviors more and the negative behaviors
less.
REFLECTIONS
1. Imagine yourself organizing your classroom in the future. In what grade/year level do you see yourself? What
routines and procedures would you consider for this level? Why?
- As a future teacher, I can see myself as a grade 10 teacher and adviser. The routines and procedures I would
consider for this level is that I want to start our day with a prayer. It is very important to us to remind ourselves
to be thankful and to ask guidance to the Lord as we seek for wisdom. I want my students to take the lead
since they are already old enough. Afterwards, the checking of attendance, dissemination of important
information and reminding the students to behave properly and to follow the rules and regulations of the school
and our classroom. And lastly, I want to remind my students that they should always respect their teachers and
classmates respectfully.
2. Make a list of the rules you are likely to implement in this level. Why would you choose these rules?
- Respect your classmates, teachers and other CCDC personnel.
- Always wear you proper uniform including the ID and proper grooming is a must.
- Always be honest.
- Don’t be late, always be on time/ No escaping of classes and cleaning schedules.
- No cheating.
- Be kind and grateful to others 😊
I choose these kind of rules because I believe that my students are matured enough to do things ethically and morally.
I want my student to always remember that respect is very important as they socialized and interact with other people.
This kind of rules also applies in the real world, and as early as now I want them to be discipline and trained to do this
kind of things because this could also happen in their work place. If students are already instructed to this kind of things
then they will be discipline enough follow this kind of rules and regulations in their working places. And as an educator, I
also want my student, to uphold the virtue of honesty and respect that even if the world is too cruel to them, I want them
to look into the positive side of the world. Being kind and grateful is so meaningful thus I want them to inhibit this kinds
of attitude by implementing this kind of rules.
3. Should learners be involved in making the class rules? Why?
- Yes learners should be involved in making the class rules, because it is them to will follow it. With this they
would be fully aware of the rules and have a full responsibility on their behaviors. If the learners are involved in
making the class rules and taking part in the process of deciding upon the rules and consequences, then they
can fell the sense of belonging in the classroom and ownership of the rules. In addition the student will
empowered in helping shaping the classroom or society they have and could build relationship with other
people and live in the diverse and democratic classroom they have. Involving them the class rules will also
uphold the essence of cooperation and could fell the essence of democracy.
