Lecture Slides On Phy Quantities, Unit Conversion and Dimension - Ms - Remya

This document contains lecture slides about units and measurement from a physics course taught by Ms. Remya R Nair. The slides discuss physical quantities and units, including fundamental and derived quantities. It introduces the International System of Units (SI) and describes the seven base SI units. The slides also cover unit prefixes, dimensions, and unit conversion. Examples are provided throughout to illustrate key concepts in units and measurement.

Physical Quantities and Units
Physical Quantity – Any number that is used to
describe a physical phenomenon quantitatively, (
EX : Mass of an object = 5 Kg).
Units – A definite amount of a physical quantity
is taken as its standard unit.

(Ex: Mass of 2 objects is 10 Kg and 10 gram.

Ms.Remya R Nair KCST, Kuwait PH002 Lecture Slides Spring 2020

Fundamental physical quantity: Those physical
quantities which are independent to each other
are called fundamental quantities.
(Ex: Length, Mass and Time)
Fundamental Units: Fundamental quantities are
measured in fundamental units.
(Ex: meter, kilogram & second)

Ms.Remya R Nair KCST, Kuwait PH002 Lecture Slides Spring 2020

SI units : Units of measurement must be standardised so
that we can accurately compare the quantities measured by
different individuals.

Other Systems
CGS
Uses centimeters (length), grams (mass) and
seconds (time)
U.S. Customary System
Uses feet (length), slugs (mass), and seconds
(time)

Derived Quantities & Derived Units
 Units of other quantities may be derived from the units discussed so
far
 There are seven primary units in the SI system
 All other units can be derived from these primary units
 Those physical quantities which are derived from fundamental quantities
are called derived quantities and their units are called derived units.
 Ex: Volume is a derived quantity with unit cubic meter and symbol m3
 Ex: Density is a derived quantity with unit kilogram per cubic meter and
symbol Kg/m3

Ms.Remya R Nair KCST, Kuwait PH002 Lecture Slides Spring 2020

 Volume: Amount of space occupied by a body
 SI Unit: cubic meter (m3)
 For a cube, Volume (V)= length x breadth x height= lbh

Density: Amount of mass per unit volume of a substance

SI Units: kg/m3
Density= Mass/Volume
