Lectures On Lab Dip

Lab dip is a swatch of dyed fabric or yarns used to get color approval from buyers before bulk dyeing. Apparel suppliers develop lab dips and send them to buyers, matching the colors to pantone codes or samples under defined lighting. Strike-offs, which are print samples on actual production fabric, are also submitted to buyers for print quality and color approval before production. Bit loom is a narrow fabric sample made on a small loom to show fabric designs like checks or stripes at low cost for buyer approval before full production.

Lab dip is a specimen of dyed fabric or yarns prepared for color
approval purpose. Prior to bulk fabric/ yarn dyeing lab dip
approval is taken from buyer. Apparel brands evaluate fabric/ yarn
color visually using a light box and/or digitally using the
spectrophotometer. Apparel supplier gets lab dips developed from
dyeing mills and they send lab dip to the buyer for color approval.
Lab dip submission procedure may vary from one brand to another.
Normally, prior to lab dip submission, supplier match the color
with the given color standard (may be pantone color code or fabric
sample) in light box under defined light source (e.g. D65).

The specimen or swatch submitted
to buyer for print, appliqué or
embroidery color & quality
approval purpose is known as print
strike-off or simply strike-off.
During sample development or
prior to production suppliers
develop these strike-offs . For strike-
off sample printing, actual
production fabric and actual base
color is used. Like lab dip approval
process, supplier internally matches
colors of print design in light box
prior to submitting strike-offs.
The print design on fabric should be
actual size (as per artwork size).

Bit loom is a common term mostly used in garment supply chain (e.g. by apparel
buyers, fabric manufacturers, merchandisers in woven garment manufacturing).
It is one kind of fabric development sample. Normally yarn dyed fabric swatches
(samples) are called as Bit loom. As solid colored or solid dyed fabric swatches
(samples) are called as Lab dip. To develop fabric design that is made with dyed
yarns (checks or stripes) or self colored yarn with different counts of yarn, a
sample development loom is used (electronic or manual loom).

Fabric is not made in full width (regular) in this loom. Only required width and
sufficient length is made to represent fabric look.

The purpose of using bit loom is to Some times hand loom terms also
show the fabric design to the buyer for used.
final look of the fabric without
spending much time in fabric
preparatory processes and with
minimum cost for fabric development.

Bit loom is made only for fabric

sample approval from buyers.
Sometimes couple of samples
(garments) are made with the
development fabric.
